I am 82, I was 14 when I first heard this symphony , I felt fascinated, hypnotized, mesmerized by it, I still feel the same way. This is an excellent performance, thank u maestro Orosco Estrada, we all Colombians are proud of you.
@@oulipolesceptique9449 yes, I first heard this when I was about 5. My parents bought 4 vinyl records for our first record player and this was one of them. The cover photo on the record sleeve was an extract from Bosch Garden of Earthly Delights (the scary bits!), which also delighted me for its horror! I have always loved this piece of music.
Played a watered-down, wind-band version of just the 4th movement of this when I was about 13 or so; loved it so much I spent my allowance on a CD recording of the whole symphony. Blew my young little mind, especially when I finally heard the 5th movement! Berlioz is on a plane all his own.
We did a strings and percussion arrangement of the 5th movement when I was in middle school. Berlioz has been my favorite since. My director sure knew how to pick music. My senior year we played Mozart 25, American in Paris, and Egmont. Sure do miss those days
I think the entire world owes gratitiude to Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. I have listened/watched at least 50 youtube live performances the last 8 years, many of them multiple times. Always in awe. Thank you again!!!
This has become my new favorite orchestra! Love everything about them, and having so many full concert videos available on you tube hopefully is bringing them a wider appreciation. I must say that I'm happy the camera work has gotten MUCH better since this early 2014 production. Such things take time and their later videos (2017 to present especially) are as fun to watch as they are to listen to. Bravo a tutti!
Abolutely agree ! Il lke this orchestra more and more (next to the Concergebouw orchestra). When this Corona-disaster is over I will definitely go to Frankfurt to listen to a concert.
WOW. This rendition is absolutely delicious. I've never heard such control of tempo for this piece. Andres lets the pendulum swing as dramatically as I imagine Berlioz would have wanted. And getting inside the orchestra to really see them play was an absolute delight. If you need me I'll be here playing this on a loop. Forever.
This outstanding version and performance is the traditional quality for an orchestra formed by excellent musicians and conductor. I used to take the one with CS and Barenboim as the example of perfection... this one is even better. Congratulations to HR FRANKFURT Sinfonie.
excuse me Chicago Symphony is the undisputed best orchestra in the world. its a shame that Dale Clevenger (once was the best horn player in the world) is retired from the CSO
Glad to hear the obbligato cornet in the 2nd movement. Of course it was added much later by Berlioz and is not strictly necessary, but I think it adds greatly to the vivacity of the ball. We need more performances with the cornet!

This piece is wonderful. I didn't know Berlioz till a week ago and now he's one of my favourites. There are no words that can possibly describe the feeling that this symphony expresses. Well done to the whole orchestra and director.
The tuba melody of the last movement is something that I have never heard in other symphonic works that I know. It is very distinctive and very well depicts the "witches scene" of the 5th movement. For me it is one the best by Berlioz!!!
Hector Berlioz, La Cote St. Andre, France, he was born, the melodic flow describes the rolling hillside . .. .⭐this Superb Symphony of Superior Musicians expressed this . ..... Bravo👏!
Perfection, both from the symphony and the conductor. Tops all the way, one hour of music, and the conductor can almost goes without a score. BRAVO !!!
Grande maestro! Exata a orquestra! Salve América Latina! Viva a Colômbia!!!!! Bravo!!!!
Sorry I’m nerding out here, but there’s actually 2 versions of the symphony. They’re almost identical, except the 2nd and older version has some parts removed, like the cornet part in the 2nd movement entirely, and a couple other brass parts. Unfortunately, most symphony’s play the 2nd version, but this here is the original, so the brass parts are more prominent and actually present.
An excellent interpretation after seeing an equally superb interpretation by the SSO last night. Its certainly a piece that grows on you. Also continue to be impressed by Andrés Orozco-Estrada's conducting. He has to be one of the very best in this era.
Thank you so much for all the incredible recordings/videos; I use them all the time to prepare for orchestral concerts, in advance of the first rehearsal, and it's such a joy :-) Xxx
BRAVO!!!
The thing that bothers me most about myself is that I am going to go from listening to this fantastic Symphony on RUclips right to watching some crocodile eat a zebra.
As time has gone on I have learned to love this work and appreciate its innovative qualities more and more. It offers an option as to how the symphony could evolve after Beethoven. It is full of innovation and novel effects which however don't exist as an end in themselves. The March to the Scaffold in particular combines jubilation with horror, evoking the holiday atmosphere all too readily associated with public executions. And this from a guy who could not play any instrument with proficiency!
When you listen carefully, despite Berlioz saying he admired Beethoven he was absolutely not influenced by him. Beethoven brings tension by development of the theme. In Berlioz nothing like that. The tensions are made by a succession of breakdowns intertwined with reminiscences. And he uses the orchestra more completely than Beethoven.
If this orchestra is not one of the best in the world and is not at the top in Europe and as we have heard formed of soloists... I don't know which could be!!! Listen this Berlioz Fantastic Symphony carefully and in all its sounds... Perfection..
I just listened to this amazing performance and there were moments that seem to announce Stravinsky's Petrouschka and even The Rite of Spring. Not mentioning the perfection in orchestration that Berlioz mastered so well...
