    Why is everyone comparing Mick to Jim? The combination of their sounds make up Slipknot. All 9 of the members, (RIP Paul Gray), is what makes them sound so amazing.

    Jim Root - a guy who can do stuff with a 22 fret 6 string guitar that most people can't do on 24 fret 7/8 string guitar. Pure Fucking Genius!!!

    Mick and James are an excellent combo, nor one is better. they both make slipknot the kickass sound that they have.

    Well, Jim's got a lot of great technique on him. He uses a lot of legato techniques, which is pretty hard to do when you pull solos like he does. He's an awesome guitar player, period.

    I was like that when I started. I was faster than my friends, could pull off harmonics and things unlike my friends, but when I actually learned and practiced scales, my solos and improv. work excelled. Scales in my opinion are mandatory to be a good guitarist.

    yes, one of the forerunners to REAL metal/shred guitarists. He was doing things that people like Kirk Hammett could never do. He was down to earth, loved to play, shredded like crazy, and was one of the best guitarists to grace the guitar world R.I.P.

      James is a pretty talented guy. I met him after a Stone Sour show in 2010, he's really cool and laid back too. It's a little crazy to think that he backs Mick up a lot of the time.

      Mick is known for extremely fast and accurate picking as well as killer rhythm, Jim can probably solo better but he has nothing on Mick's rhythm playing, check out the video of Mick playing Gematria.

    I don't even like slipknot, but I was intrigued to find that Jim Root uses Dave LaRue (the steve morse band) and Paul Gilbert exercises.
    Goes to show you, you gotta think out of the box to get anywhere in life.

    Hell scales are important for more than just playing guitar! Any instrument to play, as long as you can play your scales then improvising almost becomes second nature. If you wanna go further, learning your scales is the first step to learning all the more complex parts of music theory and composition.

    The guitar in this video is a Fender Flathead Telecaster CusTom Shop. Fender stopped making this a while ago. But Jim now has a signature Telecaster which will blow this thing out of the water.

    You're right, I don't listen to him.
    I HAVE listened to a wide variety of his music.
    And he's an icon because of GH,yeah he became big in 92' but half of his fans didn't know who he was until GH2.
    I never said he became big recently.
    And JP became big in 85' and he still has more fans after 23 years,and he has NEVER had any commercial promotion.

    They both play solo's. In the older album it's mostly Mick, but in the newer albums, they switch.

    thats weird... in a couple of interviews and on a few websites they said it was Josh Brainerd who did the recording and then he backed out of the band after it was released. they then initiated jim before they began touring.

    it's a Flat Head Telecaster modifed slightly for his lower tuning and modified with more humbucking power. plus with all the gear Jim has to wear, a light guitar will help him oonstage.

    I think jim root and brian welch of korn is of same level when it comes to guitar master shredderer. I saw one video of brian doing a guitar solo and it was out of this world. It sounded like something I havent ever heard before from any rock guitarist. I think he has his own sets of notes. What you think guys?

    The pentatonic scale has 2 notes per string per position, the diatonic has three.
    You can play 3 notes per string on the pentatonic but doing streches.
