  • Auto shops and drivers across New York state are adapting or preparing to change the way their motor vehicle inspection process works.
As the new system is being rolled out, auto shops will transition from books of pre-written inspection stickers to blank rolls of sticker, where each individual inspection will be printed out on demand.
"There's a lot of fraud when it comes to inspection stickers, registration or tires on vehicles," Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola said. "You see it all the time."
Auto shop owners say the blank rolls of stickers will help prevent inspection stickers getting stolen.

Why is NYS requiring inspections on cars less than three years old? It's not like a car is going to be falling apart in that short a time period. The most egregious part is that a new car, fresh off the assembly line requires the same inspection as a ten year old car.

    • @robertknight4672

Massachusetts requires inspections no matter how New or old the car is. Not too long ago it was slightly different a brand new car body dealer actually didn't have to an inspection sticker for the first year in at some point that got changed. I remember my father's brand new 2006 Honda Element didn't have an inspection sticker when we first bought it but it was inspected promptly the second year.

For anyone wondering just register your vehicle in another state I’m a business owner and as long as I keep up with maintenance what’s an inspection. Also the inspection won’t tell me if my vehicle will break tomorrow. I literally needed a battery for a box truck that ran like it just came out of the factory.

The news anchors are cancelling each other…. I don’t like the stickers… I called the police when I saw mine today to ask if they were legitimate. These display too much information. People don’t need to know how many miles are on everyone’s vehicle. And when you scan the code … what are these numbers signifying? These stickers leave too much information for other individuals to see.

@@cygcars07 Maybe you don't but others do. I have a guy that walks up and down my block with his dog and lets people know there inspection is expired, Which is a good thing. but lets say my car has 45,000 miles when I inspected it then the new sticker says 68,000 They will know I have driven 23,000 miles in one year. That is no ones business anyways, so why post it on my car? Now if you have a low milage car a thief might want to go after your car first before someone else's. Or you get pulled over by police and they see my inspection sticker had 42k on it, Now its six months later and I have 68k on it. Some of these cops are noisy as fook and will want to ask you questions "Never answer there questions" They will suspect your driving to other states ask you what are you doing driving so much, what type of work do you do, and even come to their own conclusions that you maybe trafficking something illegal, Drugs, Guns, Cigarettes, etc. How much I drive my car is my business and no one else's.
You may think I am being paranoid, but trust me cops and people come to their own conclusions. Again why does the amount of miles I drive need to be posted? Makes no sense.

The car inspection in nys is irritaring, enraging & unnececssary. Instead of listing what is checked, it is easier to say what isn't checked!!!!! And there's always something wrong!!!! The Democratic Peoples'Republic of NY does all that for one reason: To harass the driver!!!! It is the main reason that I left nys & went to Connecticut where the inspection consists of only an emissions test & seeing that the Cat Con is in place.....every 2 years.

Not true every shop wants to increase the price it’s been $21 for years it’s not enough money to even break even it’s not about greed it’s about making enough to atleast break even. It’s a big responsibility having a machine and we make nothing off them. For the most part inspections don’t effect my sales if a car fails most of my customers would fix it anyways because they want their vehicles to be safe. We make $14 on an inspection that’s not enough to even pay my technician to do it then we still have to pay for Internet, paper, toner and it does use electricity. If the computer breaks it’s $1100 to buy one from the state and they are used not even new.
