The "safe" roads we have in PA are the reason I've never had an inspection on my vehicles. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice a change in your brakes, steering, or the way your car is handling bumps. I'll gladly pay 15 extra to register a vehicle than 50 for inspection.

@@firingallcylinders2949 The "mechanics" are actually referred to as technicians now. Also, it's not the technicians that make the money. It is the states and the repair shops themselves. I will clue you in to something else. Technicians that do inspections have their identification number. If something happens or fails on a vehicle causing an accident with injuries/fatalities that has recently been inspected, guess who gets the shaft. That's right, the technician. Their inspection number is the one tied to that vehicle. Stop making it sound like you know everything about how technicians are getting paid because you don't.

Worse, said parts would give out after sooner than expected or make nosie. They need to do away with the inspections. It's a nice thought on paper but utterly useless. Maybe if the inspection shops weren't scheduling out weeks I would feel differently. Moreover, most shops seem more concerned about drumming up work than actually finding safety problems. In the worst case, I had a shop cut a tie rod boot to try and make work.
I've lived in states where there are no safety inspections (PA is actually the minority in inspections) and there was no noticeable difference on the road.

Inspections are actually an overreach of government authority.. Taxation without representation. It is the vehicle owner's responsibility to ensure their car is safe not a tax by the state on the majority of vehicle owners who ensure their car is safe regardless of inspections. I lived in Ohio for many years. Yes they had some sketchy hillbillies driving heaps around but a majority of people maintained their vehicles. We don't want to brake down beside the road, get in an accident nor cause further damage to our vehicles. If we had an issue we fixed it. The annual inspection would be welcomed if performed by Penn Dot and not sketchy repair shops who want to take you for a ride every year. I am a Certified mechanic and maintain my vehicles beyond what most do. Every year when I pull into one of these shops they attempt to give me a bill between $350-$700. They will try to claim warped rotors, busted bead in tires had one shop have the audacity to state all 4 of my tires needed replaced when my tires were 4 months old with 600 mi on them. So it's not just the inspection fee this is how many of these shops pad their pocket. The average driver is paying $300 annually for inspection and emissions.

The state should get rid of inspection and emissions for privately-owned, personal use passenger vehicles. The vast majority of people in Pennsylvania have enough sense to keep up with the maintenance on their vehicles.
I'd be okay with keeping them for buses, taxis, commercial trucks, and emergency/municipal vehicles, though. Since these vehicles largely serve the public, those are the ones you want to worry about.

I understand vehicles should be checked for safety. But as someone with 2 vehicles in PA. Every year does dig into my pocket more than I would like. Not to mention I'm in Cumberland county and we require an emissions inspection every year. Why would I need an emissions inspection on a newer vehicle anyway. Now I would understand if im driving around in a 1982 scottsdale with giant custom exhaust. However aren't new vehicles much better for the environment. Also I own a truck and registration is higher for trucks. (I pay 76$ to register my tacoma, and 36$ to register my rav4. Which are both similiar sized vehicles). Its 80% about the money grab. 20% about safety. I propose inspections every 2 years. And abolish emissions inspections for all cars made after 2000.

Really reason for alot of unsafe cars and why they get like that and rusty? Yep from the shitty salt belt states throwing loads of salts on the roads.... like in ny you lucky too drive a new car or truck off the lot and have it make it 3 to 5 year mark before its rusted out... Getting to the point pa is like that too now... which really that shit is a money thing makes people replace their cars left and right... Get 3 inchs of snow even in the salt belts? There they go throwing loads of salt down in hours or the next day.... Which really anything under 5 or 6inchs really dont need it just plow it... Salt is what making cars become unsafe no doubt about that. or hell use something else that dont rust everything on the road... And tell you the truth i see alot of old and even new cars and trucks driving around with out even inspections really. than yea alot of people gets a sticker put on anything too with out having it checked. So in my opinion stuff is going on now having no inspections . So really in my opinion having no inspections sorry to say im for it. let alone garages like too charge ya a arm and a leg for for everything. Like say have a hole in the body even a small one yea wont pass inspection like really?? i could see under the car or in a trucks frame but the freaking body aka outside of the car which is not a safety concern?? ALL VERY LOGICAL......BUTT-------under MS 4 protocols......road salt and runoff into the streams...which all roadway drainage goes.....WILL NOW BE FORBIDDEN !! You won't be able to wash your car in your driveway and YOU and COMMERCIAL properties will be FINED for having IMPERVIOUS PAVEMENTS......hence a huge commercial parking lot will NOW COST YOU !!! E.P.A. clean water act or something like that

no, they dont, get your head out of the sand, your too gullible ! annual inspections are a MONEY GRAB, and nothing more! most of the US does not have annual inspections, and they are not having any problems! so if PA removes the requirement of annual inspections, feel FREE to have yours done annually! LOL !I bet you any money you WONT ! and btw, inspections are not going away in PA, they are just changing it to when the car is sold or the title is transferred...

really reason for alot of unsafe cars and why they get like that and rusty? yep from the shitty salt belt states throwing loads of salts on the roads.... like in ny you lucky too drive a new car or truck off the lot and have it make it 3 to 5 year mark before its rusted out... getting to the point pa is like that too now... which really that shit is a money thing makes people replace their cars left and right... get 3 inchs of snow even in the salt belts? there they go throwing loads of salt down in hours or the next day.... which really anything under 5 or 6inchs really dont need it just plow it... salt is what making cars become unsafe no doubt about that. or hell use something else that dont rust everything on the road...

Wow what a dumb idea. I hate getting my vehicles inspected, but it is critical for safety. I recall two times the inspection has found a serious issue with my braking system, and I drive newer vehicles and look after them reasonably well. To say it is not necessary any more because of cash for clunkers just blows my mind. What kind of rationale is that? That may have replaced some old cars 10 years ago, but what about all the cars that were new at that time? Now they are 10 years old and far less safe. I hate to call somebody an idiot...but I think I just watched one.

If you've had a "serious braking issue" TWICE on the same vehicle, you either need to find a new mechanic or learn how to drive. Or both.

I get people don't take care of there car like they should, but it's a rip-off at the same time. Many garages take advantage of people who must get that new sticker. Take it to one guy, and he tells you you need all of this work. Take it to the guy next door who says your car is fine. You don't need all that. It's their word against yours weather not they will pass you.

Remove the annual SAFETY inspection? Ok, you'd better significantly increase the fines and add prison time for those driving with EXTREMELY unsafe vehicles. The amount of vehicles currently on the road with catastrophic safety failures is staggering. Allowing these people to travel these people to drive on the road is terrifying to say the least.

Give me a break. you act like there are cars driving around with grenades in the trunk. I've lived in states without safety inspections and there was NO NOTICABLE DIFFERENCE on the road. The only thing I notice here in PA is the hassle of trying to schedule these inspections, at shops who just use the process to drum up unneeded work.

I think some people will not replace brakes & tires, causing the vehicles to be unsafe. God knows I don’t like government intrusion, but I would vote to keep annual inspections.

Northern states have this thing called snow that requires road salt to be used. Are you OK with frames / suspension components rusting off causing a crash?

@@davidw835 One problem with dumping safety inspections is losing control of making sure cars have insurance. A safety sticker in the windshield at least shows that the car had insurance at time of inspection.
I have decades in and around the car business, if you have seen some of the rusted out / improperly repaired stuff on the roads you would not want to drop safety inspections in road salt / hilly areas.

We don't have a problem with cars with maintenance issues here in PA because there are annual safety inspections.NOT because of obama or some people having newer cars. Leave it to a democrat to cancel a program that keeps our roads safe from rolling death traps. Just so they can make another $15 off every PA vehicle registration. The roads and bridges are not vehicle worthy so now lets make the vehicles not road worthy. GREAT PLAN! And I'm sure that extra money they're collecting won't totally make it into someones pocket instead of being used to fix the roads and bridges they say it's going to be used for. I totally don't see this doubling or tripling the vehicle related accidents and deaths on PA roads.
