- Mike Marshall and Chris Thile playing the traditional "Fisher's Hornpipe" from their record "Into the Cauldron."
This is a clip from Mike Marshall & Chris Thile's set on the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. You can watch the show in its entirity by visiting the Woodsongs archives at www.woodsongs.c... (show #287).
My mandolin heard this and locked itself in the case and won’t let me play it anymore.
This should be one of the most viewed videos on RUclips. Outstanding musicianship
Jeeeeeeeesuuuuuuuus... That's the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen!
the two best on earth....they are so far beyond all other mandolin players, it's unbelievable....as a mando player, I've studied about everyone you can imagine, these guys are the absolute, without a doubt, BEST!
I personally think this performance (not just this song) in particular is the best I’ve ever seen from both Mike & Chris and that’s saying something. Granted it’s personal preference but these men were ON ONE this day.,
I keep coming back to this video!
Cue Zephyr I’m STILL coming back to this video!
I keep hoping someone makes a mistake. Nope
This has got to be one of the most-viewed videos of 240p, haha.
That’s Marshall/Thile power, baby! 😂
Marshall and Thile. Just amazing. Speechless.
its 2020, i watched this in a class in college in 2014. still amazing
Its hard for me to imagine how well they understand the music and their skill at playing it.
Mike is a great arranger.
It's now the year of our Lord two-thousand twenty and three .
A.I. my aiss !
Thats what mandolin is all about. Swaying your head and making that focused picking face! Love it!
Two of the finest musicians on the planet. And as otherworldly as Chris Thile is, don't think for a second that Mike Marshall can't keep up with him. Those two are some glorious musicians.
Beautiful how this tune takes on a new dimension at faster tempo in addition to being masterfully played
@jbrad1211 He was playing one of his Dudenbostels in this vid, because it was taken a while ago. Since about 2008 or so he's been playing a 1924 Gibson F-5, from the Lloyd Loar era. I heard somebody found it under the bed of the first owner's house, and it had been almost untouched for 85 years. They say Thile paid a mint for it, but it's a stunningly beautiful instrument. Indicentally, Mike Marshall's Lloyd Loar Gibson was signed ("born") on the same day as Thile's.
Happy song! Brightens up my day.
Chris Thile is the bomb!!!!!! Could watch him play all day!
It's incredible how the first 15 seconds or so literally sound like one person.
How can anybody have a negative reaction to a clip like this?
Both of these guys are phenomenal and when they get together Stand Back!
People in the front row have had their eyebrows singed . . .
That's art. No, it's beyond art -- it's Godstuff.
I keep being drawn back to a little segment of this rendition; 2:15 - 2:22.
I have to rewind back to focus on Mike’s backup chords that perfectly accompanies Chris’ technically marvellous picking, and the rewind back once again to focus on Chris to really pick up on all the little nuances that he fits in a tiny little bit of this tune.
Both deserve to have my focus equally in that segment.
Pure listening pleasure! So glad I got to hear this!
WHOA! I didn't even know it was possible to be that good. That is awesome.
fantastici the best music i 've ever heard!
These two guys are out of space 😄🙌🏻
Absolutely incredible. Even Chris' backup wets my eye. 0.50 to 1.23...you judge!
KILLER KILLER KILLER KILLER!
What a fantastic duet
anyone see mandolins at midnight? It was these two along with Hamilton de Hollanda at wintergrass a few years back. Stumbling onto this one reminded me of that show.....spectacular.
beautiful playing made my day
Incredible!
It's only just occurred to me that they both look absolutely baked.
+yaisum haha yea they totally look like they're baked. but so what?! they play great!
That actually was the first thing to occur to me...what a bunch of stoners ! love it!
It is called blueGRASS
dont worry thats normal for mandolin players
Just FYI, Mike was totally sick at shit show and had a 104 fever so was likely not baked. I doubt Chris smokes.
Amazing! Mind Blowing!
Just unbelievable!
Outstanding.
Woah!! Just fantastic!
The best I ever see
i just love this video
Holy smokes I have no words
This is great!
0:24 There's some bluesy business happening here and I like it a lot.
Awsome and beyond
Increíble, inigualable. Perfección técnica apabullante pero corazón musical enorme también, sentimiento puro. Grandes músicos.
These guys are monsters.
amazing
Besser geht es nicht!!!!!!!!!
absolutely insane!
Just. Wow.
pure beauty
ummmm. wow. What can you say? These guys are amazing.
2:48 effing flawless and most impressive.
Lovely arrangement!
omg - awesome!
I don't think I could move my fingers that fast if even I hooked a 12 volt car battery to my elbow! Lordy! That's really fantastic. I'm with ya, I don't think I have enough years left!
Mike Marshall is an unbelievable stringed instrument maestro... but Chris Thile is ALWAYS the best mandolin player in ANY venue he EVER plays! I've seen him four times and his joy for music might actually surpass his technical prowess!!
Bravissimo!!!!!!!!!
Wow!
wierd faces or not i like it verry mutch these guys are the best
smashin!!!
just remember when you you point your finger at such talent as this there are three pointing back at YOU
SEAMLESS. I hope I can do this someday.
Grandes !!! !!! !!!.-
you might as well call this "Mike Marshall and Chris Thile are better at mandolin than everyone else in the human race". good god....
He'll yeah!!!
hallucinant!
oh my!
yehaa - awesome..
Gosh.
WOW
@jbrad1211 I think you can find a Dudenbostel for around $30K, but not a Gibson Loar (Gibson F5s made between 1921 and 1924). Those will run you between $100k (for one with issues) up to the quarter million-dollar one that Chris bought. Kind of scary, when you think about it. I can't imagine being the guardian of such an instrument!
I want more and in HD
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤️❤️
@gwoman6071 a mint and then some- the dealer who found Thile's Loar mandolin is a friend of a friend, and said he paid around a quarter of a million dollars for it. also said it's a mint example of a Loar mandolin, though.
My God those are some serious fucking chops! Not referring to the sideburns. Simultaneous soloing has never sounded so good, thanks for posting!
wow.
@wankatronic Yep. That's the "mint" I was referring to. I saw a Gibson Loar for sale for $98k once, but that's about the lowest price I've seen.
Sometimes all you can say about a musical performance is HOT DAMN!
@gwoman6071 Thanks for the update. Heard that some Loar's are over $30,000.
They're ALL over $30K, if $160,000 seems to be average today (in 2019).
Chris had his O-face on from 1:15 to 1:25 ;) love it
BEEEEEEAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMM
@gwoman6071 Dudenbostel was taking orders for mandolins a while back- $25k for a brand new one. yikes. makes me glad I play the dobro- its rare to see one that sells for more than $10k, vintage or not. and you can get plenty of great sounding dobros for under $5k if you know where to look.
THEM ARE SOME CHOPS!
BEAAMMMMMMM
Have you tried it while sitting on a very small chair?
@floater156 That's called finding enjoyment in playing an instrument, and extremely well at that. Something you obviously cannot relate to.
He plays a Dudenbostel mandolin mostly, but he plays other mandolins at times.
listening to this in 2.....then in 0.25
I NEED TO GET DRUNK when listening to this!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sheesh! That's enough to make a guy like me just put his mando away and give up. My goodness, what great pickin'!
hey everybody, couple good ones from

BIG LOVE FROM GRANDPA.
They are a joy to watch! Weird. I do exactly the same thing with my feet when I'm playing. Must be a mandolin playing thing.
boom
The 2 Best? With all due respect David ( Dawg) Grisman gets the title of Best Mandolinist in Planet Earth!
Now I know how electric guitarists felt when they first heard Jimi Hendrix and wondered what was wrong with their rigs.
Hey no fair, they rehearsed this, beforehand ;)
1:14 Jizz in his pants. Because he is just that awesome!
Honestly, guys like this run away with everything, don't they?...the tune itself, the best instruments, the women! Jeez....Both these players make me feel like my hands are suitable only for wiping my...Oh no. Sorry, suitable only for wiping the "sheen" off of my instrument placed there by the sweat of my own futility in attempting to play one of the most stubbornly recalcitrant instruments of all time...the mandolin! Super impressive music.
