I don't think anybody can replace Lombardo. He's amazing and while Portnoy can play his parts, there's just something special about the way Dave plays them.
This is because only he can be him. Those tracks are engraved in our memories with his swing and agression on it, so, even if there are many way better skillled drummers, they will not be able to copy that swing from the records.

@@moveover76 I'm not the biggest Portnoy fan, but I guarantee he can play Angel of Death. Its not that fast for a modern drummer (~215 bpm 16ths on the fastest double bass runs). And Mike is plenty quick. Whether he can be as consistent and powerful as Lombardo is another story entirely, but Angel is not the most complex song in Slayer's catalog. Mike's work in DT has many examples of fast single strokes and double bass patterns. And, being the fanboy that he is, probably covered this song 100s of times growing up.

He has always said a good sound man can get you that snap on your bass drums with good eq and mic placement. Listen to his bass drums dude they are barely even dampered. He like them as wide open and booming as possible. That sound is the exact OPPOSITE of the robotic sound of triggered drums. Are you a drummer? If so for how long? You should not generalize something like that. Real drummers get upset when you don't speak from knowledge.

Igor Cavalera (or however he spells Igor nowadays). Hardest hitting drummer I've ever seen. Eloy Casagrande (his replacement in Sepultura) also beats the living hell out of his kit.
@@blppt Being savage doesn't necessarily mean hitting hard. It's creating the appropriate brutal fills and playing energetically. Bostaph is very precise and is no slouch, but Dave's creativity and punkish aggression is unmatched. If anything, Slayer should've stuck with Jon Dette.

I've seen this performance on many different channels ,from behind the drum riser, the left and now the right , it never ceases to amaze me at how natural Dave's playing ability is , if you are a musician and you watch Dave perform this ,if it doesn't impress you at his technical abilities ,speed and the power he hits and kicks this drums at then you know nothing of playing live , Dave lombardo is one of the main reason we now have super fast extreme metal drumming ,
