    This weekend I just picked up a couple of exterior motion lights and if you follow along with me in the video, you can learn how to install these yourself. It’s actually not that hard to do even though we’ll have to deal with electrical wires which can make some people nervous. The good thing is that only basic tools are needed along with a circuit tester.
    The lamp I'm installing is a decorative mission style light that looks like a normal light except that it also has a motion sensor. This lamp wasn't too expensive but if you buy a non-motion sensing light it will be a bit cheaper. But I like the idea of the added security of a motion light.
    I think anyone can install a light safely if you follow the steps in the video and make sure that the power is off to the outlet you are working on. It can really help you save money by not having to call an electrician to do the job.
    I hope you found this video helpful and if you did please hit the thumbs up and don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of my weekly videos! See ya next time!

      Hi there I tried to replace mine the other day,but the issue i had was, my new lantern light had a wee block,and the existing one on the wall that I wanted to replace had 6 wires.
      2 main wires coming from the house,then the other 4 came from the light which were brown,blue,brown,green&yellow.. now which block do I remove? The one that came with my light or the one connected to the house? Thanks

    Thanks for sharing... when installing the wire nuts to the wires don’t twist the wires before installing the nuts. Line the two ends of the wires to the end of each other then slide the wire nut on and then twist them tight. This way both wires are twisted together completely. Also wire nuts are known to loosen after time, which will cause the wires to heat up and catch on fire. To keep this from happening, after twisting the wire nuts tight take electric tape and wrap it the same direction as tightening start on the nut and wrap it to the wires so the tape keeps the wire nut from being able to loosen after time. I hope this helps you. Again thanks for sharing your task.

    So what do you do for that particular lights red wire? I have the same lamp the red wire is just loose and not too connected to anything else. If I don't plug the red wire together with the black wire it won't turn on the motion sensing won't work so I have to turn it off manually from the wall. Any suggestions

    Don't forget to apply caulking where the light rests against the wood board.

    I haven’t purchased the lights yet but I currently do not have any lights where I am thinking of installing the new lights. Is there anyway to convert these lights to be a plug in rather than hard wired?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  2 года назад

      You can attach a cord to these exterior lights. It would be like adding an extension cord to it except on the light you will have raw wires you need to connect. I’ve not done it with lights but I have made my own extension cords. All the parts you need can be found at your local hardware store.

    How do you adjust the timer. Or the time that the light stays on

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  2 года назад

      I think there’s a physical switch on the bottom of the motion light that determines the duration of how long the light will stay on. There might only be 2 or 3 choices.

    I currently have two ext. lights with one switch inside to turn both on/off.. If I replace both ext. lights with two new motion detector lights like this, will both lights turn on when motion is detected or just the light that detected the motion? (Assume inside switch is on, of course)

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  2 года назад

      In the setup you describe only the light that detects the motion will turn on. But if someone passes by both lights then they’ll both turn on but only when each one senses motion. In this situation both lights are operating independently. Hope this helps!

    Hi I had a question, I did have an outside light but it’s a manual switch beside the door inside the house. So it’s useless when we want to get into the house and can’t see the keyhole clearly. How do I replace it with a motion sensor light?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 года назад

      My video shows the exact steps I took to replace a standard light with a motion sensing light fixture. The motion sensor is built into the body of the light. If you’re confident working with electrical around your house then you can use my video as a guide. If not an electrician is the best solution.

    Do I need to connect the red and black wire together to get motion sensor to work?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 года назад +1

      The electrical wires don't affect how the motion sensor works. On these type of lights there should be a switch at the bottom of the light that says Test. There are 2 more positions for that switch that change the duration of how long the light stays on after motion is detected. Hope this helps!

      The red wire is only used if you want the fixtures to either control or work together with another fixture

    What do I need to do to keep the light on all night

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 года назад +1

      I think on these motion lights there’s a sequence you can toggle your light switch to keep it constantly on. I don’t have the instructions for these lights anymore but I know on a different set I was able to flip the light switch on and off 3 times and it would stay on until I turned the switch off. However don’t quote me on the numbers of switch flips because I can’t remember the exact number. But it can be done! If I find out I’ll update this answer. Thanks for watching!

      Pretty sure there is a process to override the dimming/turn off feature. I think one of mine you had to flick the switch twice. If you know the brand can google a manual

      Try adjusting one of the switches on the bottom of the motion light. There is a test function plus positions for different lighting durations.

    My light stay all all day. Have set on 5 min and other setting off.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 года назад

      Sorry you’re having issues with your motion light. Did you know that the wall switch inside your house has an affect on the light? I’m not 100% sure all motion lights can do this but if you flip your light switch on and off 3 times it will set it to constant On. It may not be 3 on/off flips but flipping the light switch a certain number of times sets the mode of the light fixture. If you have your manual check to see if it has these modes. Hope this helps!

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 года назад

      Also one of the switches on the actual motion light will disable the light sensor so it will still turn on in the day. I think that might be Test mode. You should see that on the light itself.
