This was installed better than a lot of professional electricians I have come across would ever do great video really good install. I'm a self employed electrician with my own business it's nice to see someone explaining things and installing things correctly.
I always feel for a professional it's just another job. It's the same with working on your car, a garage has the official know-how of mechanics etc, but your car is just another one in a sea of hundreds worked on every day. Doing things yourself gives you a natural drive to want the best looking finish possible.
Wow, I learned more from this video than all of the other resources together. The way you broke it down and really clearly explained everything from turning the power off at the box, to mounting, wiring, even all the way to hooking it off at the light junction box. Thank you! ❤
The electrician that originally installed our light, wired it directly in to the light itself, so was always a bit difficult to get the light replaced each time. So I added a junction box. I come here to learn how to do it and I found this incredibly helpful. You are a born teacher. Thank you so much for posting this.
@@DeanSmith3935 Those types of light come with a like 6 inch bit of flex usually. So you're going to need a junction box. There's another kind where you wire straight into the back of the light. (Also not an electrician lol.)
Another great video. You're an excellent instructor and presenter. In addition to all the other stuff (e.g., competence, structure), I also appreciate that you use a clear, natural speaking voice without the childish affectations so many RUclipsrs use. Well done all around.
I like how you explain: clearly and to the point in addition to the charming English accent😊I may do this project for my back garden in future. This weekend though I have to install a dog flap on my back uPVC door. I guess my main struggle will be the adjustment of the door panel thickness to the larger depth of the dog flap.
Nice simple well produced video. Pushed both buttons for you. You can tell that you've watched a lot of American channels before starting yours because you "go ahead" and do things ALOT! 🙂
Earned yourself a new sub, I did very basic electrical training in college for a couple of months and this video is so simple to follow. Will definitely look into your channel more. Thank You.
as an electrician, ive always found a step drill bit a hell of a lot easier than using a spade drill bit :) just food for thought, but otherwise good video! dont forget to backfill the hole with weatherproof silicone before you put the cover on as well!
The issue about using a sealant on the rear transit cable hole is exactly the concern I had after watching the video. The way it was left had seriously compromised the IP rating of the JB. An alternative would have been to use one of the side ports with a gland to pass the power supply cable through.
@@TheDIYGuy1 Just to say the strippers arrived yesterday. Thanks for your recommendation [and how to use them]. Got to be the best DIY purchase I've made in a long time. Superb!
Some of the best DIY vids on RUclips. Curious as to why you never silicone sealed the hole drilled in the junction box & hole u drilled thru the wall to stop moisture ingress & crawlies etc. Personally I use crimps in junction boxes to connect bare wire ends, not a fan of the Wago clips.
Superb video buddy. I've been trying to figure out how to install this using an indoor socket as a power supply but i think i have it susses now thanks to you. Cheers mate, well done!!

Great video. Our electrician mounted security light right next to the boiler flue so everytime the boiler comes on the heat off the flue triggers the light!
Did he fit it where he wanted or did he fit where you wanted it. When I install anything I always ask or I am told before hand, if I see any potential issues then I will raise my concerns, but if a person is insistent on a certain position, then it's their problem.
Love it. Thanks. If I'm wanting to take a feed from a light switch in my garage to fit an outside light can I just take a spur straight from the light switch?
The junction box is to prevent against weather conditions in an electrical fault. Incase the flex is damaged. Thats why a IPX rated junction box is used.
Which is a good UK brand of these kinds of lights that don't leak or burn out. Every led pir light I have had leaked rainwater or the led burnt out prematurely. An old halogen one I have from 23 years ago is still intact and works fine, but it costs more to run.
11:01 shows you have a crack in the back box that runs from the knock-out at the top to the mounting screw hole nearest it. It's probably a cheapie one. The back box is toast and should be changed. Having said that, it'll probably stay like that for years as the wiring is solidly clipped all around it and 'she be right' as they say down under. Nice vid though.
Hi, a question on installing a outside floodlight, can I fix it with a three pin plug and take power from the internal wall socket? instead of the traditional ring mains.
Just to clarify, you have a 2gang switch one is for an inside light and the other is free, and did you connect the floodlight live wire to the inside light to share electricity? Thank you
Great video! Im just slightly confused with the connection at the end. Could the security light not be fed off the permanent feed instead of the load side of the fused spur? This then enables the switch to operate the outside lights only either side of the garage? Or am I missing a vital part somewhere in the video? Thanks.
Good video, My outdoor lighting has only a live and neutral connection? How would I connect this to the mains? Would i be able to just put a plug on the end of it and into a socket in my garage?
Firstly, another excellent video. Not only have you saved me alot of money but I'm now working around the house as a DIY junkie :). I noticed that the links for the WAGO link and Junction box items are unavailable from amazon, therefore would any IP55 junction box do the job ?
What was the switched fused connection unit already feeding? It's very important to warn people not to use a SFCU that powers ANYTHING. I can see people trying to use connection units for heaters and all manner of things.
Can't you drill a hole in the light bracket and feed the light cable through the wall and make the connection in the garage and lose the junction box out side put it in the garage just a thought. Good information video. Oh what size fuse in switched spur is it 5amp
Hi DIY guy. Great video as always. Can I please ask a question? We already have a fused switch in a cupboard from an upstairs socket. It is live but the outdoor light doesn’t work. We are planning on getting a new set of two up/down lights with PIR (one of your other videos where you have gone straight from the light to the switch inside as the wire is behind the fitting). Are we ok to just feed it straight through (with conduit / sealant) or is it good practice to add a junction box like this? The plan will also be to daisy chain from one light over to the other one inside. Cheers
Hi, great video - I'd like to ask; is the junction box necessary? Can you not plug straight into the light itself (assuming you can remove the cable that comes with the light)
Just a quick question....could I wire this to a plug socket instead? Also does the plug socket need to be on at all times for it to work? Hope you get this
@@TheDIYGuy1thanks for video I have liked it and subscribed, just wanted to ask the far left box in the garage looks like a fuse box what is that for? Is it bcoz there's a more than spur so needs its own fuse ? Thank you Pete

Hi just wondering (obviously not an electrician), why couldn't you just feed the flex though the wall to a switch, why do you need a junction box?

Absolutely. I did this but couldn't put it into the edit due to my camera man messing up 🙈
Great video! I do have a question, can you just put the wire straight through the wall and use water proof silicon instead of using the box?
You can but if the light fixture needs replacing, may be more difficult to remove/replace it. The junction box makes it that bit easier.
Most lights have weather proof seals on the box so yes you can.
