    Mac Miller was a well respected and widely adored rapper from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He achieved a lot in his short career, from immense popularity and chart-topping albums such as Blue Slide Park, Watching Movies With the Sound Off, GO:OD AM, The Divine Feminine and Swimming. Mac Miller was also a widely respected figure in the music industry, working with and befriending musicians such as Earl Sweatshirt, JID, Post Malone, J Cole and many more. Mac's music was jazzy and constantly evolving. His lyrics were self exploratory and always personable. He constantly tried to improve his music and push it forward.
    Mac died in September 2018 of a drug overdose following an incredibly tumultuous period of months after his breakup with Ariana Grande and the release of his 5th album, Swimming. Rest in peace Malcolm.

      So what you just do your best nerdwriter impression & make claims about an album’s standing bc it impacted you? Your personal attachment to a record doesn’t make it inherently more influential or impactful on a larger scale. We don’t even know if it will be influential or impactful.
      This video just you talking about how effected you were by the album w/o any conversation about the albums place in our culture/it’s influence on music. That’s what ppl mean when they talk about “modern classics” ie TPAB or blonde. These albums had an intense impact & sweeping influence almost immediately after they were released, enough that ppl were willing to predict their standing the test of time.
      I’m not saying you shouldn’t like or talk about the album. You’re making videos that you want to make, that’s admirable. But don’t put an absurd label on this album seemingly to justify your love for it.

    • @NorthWestLax01

      I mean this video is essentially about his progression. Why not focus solely on that instead of tacking on this “modern classic” bs?

BUT regardless if he doesn’t win anything I hope they take some time to pay respects to him at the Grammys that’s the least the music world can do for him.. he wasn’t just your standard rapper, he came up independent and stayed relevant this whole time dude was SOOOOO versatile and talented he could make beats, sing, crazy MC, write, produce & play several different instruments .. we definitely lost a Goat.. mac was probably one of the most underrated artists of our time if you actually look at all he’s done and the great people he helped on their come up.... anyone whose involved in this industry or this culture and is actually passionate about this shit knows and understands how important Mac miller really is !!!! His music will age beautifully all this trendy shit will come and go but the real will always last.. mac miller left his mark. #LLMM

    Swimming provides the ultimate metaphor I never thought I needed to hear. Life feels like this vast ocean that I’m stuck in the middle of. I feel small, there is no sign of shore or other boats, it’s terrifying. That fear of scale and the unknown keeps me frozen. Then waves of anxiety toss me around and nearly drown me in my thoughts and insecurities. The only real way to help your self is to start swimming. The waves will keep coming, you’re still small compared to an ocean. The important thing is that when you start you are finally moving forward. As long as you keep swimming you cannot drown, you will find land, you will find help, you will make it. Waiting in the water arguing with yourself about what could and couldn’t be, only keeps you stuck in the same place. Mobility is the only solution to immobility. So pick a direction and go.

    Honestly, i feel that Mac also hinted at his eventual death in a few of his songs. Like in Self Care he says "like september I fall" and he ended up passing in september. Also the music video was him in a coffin so he was hinting that he was not in the right headspace for a while. Also in the beat switch of the song he goes on about the "beautiful feeling in oblivion" which again is him hinting of what he believes the afterlife is, utter nothingness but pure peace. Wherever Mac is I hope he's finally found a way out of his head and he's happy, he'll be truly missed fr

    Ive been a Mac stan since Best Day Ever. I can remember in high school whenever I was in a bad mood I would put on some of his early stuff and I could never help but crack a smile. As I grew up and graduated it felt like Mac was evolving with me. I remember when Watching Movies and Faces came out I was in one of the darkest spots of my life, and I felt like he was speaking for me in a sense. And as things grew better and I started to find myself I feel like Mac did too.
    When Swimming dropped it was like the culmination of everything he had made up to that point and a symbol for the journey he had taken, and therein my own. I was upset at the time that it got buried underneath Astroworld and Swimming wasn't going to get the recognition it deserved. I cried real tears when Mac died, something I've never done for any other celebrity or musician. Its hard to come to terms with someone who has brought you so much joy and has been a huge influence in your life just being gone.
    Its great that now he is finally getting the recognition he deserved, but it still baffles me that it couldn't have happened sooner. Maybe things could have been different. I guess we'll never know.
    RIP Mac, rest easy buddy.

I know it might sound like people are hopping the wave, but it’s almost like the hype with Nostradamus... before any of his predictions came true, they were just that. When they did come true, it added an entire fascination with what he thought. All over his entire discography he aludes to him overdosing in the future... crazy

    Ive been listening to Mac since I was a kid. My friend showed me him and we were so pumped when blue slide park came out. He went and met Mac at a signing thing but i couldn't go since it was a school night. I remember in early high school sometime when a girl i was into didn't reciprocate those feelings, I listened to another night alone every night before bed for at least a year straight. Pretty pathetic right! When watching movies with the sound off came out I would listen to it consistently and would loop this turtle documentary on youtube with his album played over it. I think the video is still up. When I had a summer job spent on my computer I listened to objects in the mirror live the whole dam time. Must of listened to that song 50+ hours. When i hit college i didn't listen to mac as religiously as back then but I'd never change the song if he was on. When swimming came out I got back into listening to mac again and showed him to my little brother who was around the age I was when I first listened to Watching Movies. I saw that Mac was having a show at the hotel cafe for only 5$ and it would be awesome to finally see him live and bring my brother and get him into the artist he'd seen me listening to for years. We drove down there, got there 5 hours early to be the first in line (which we weren't), and I brought a little pink electric guitar and amp to play mac songs while waiting. No one in line knew the songs. Anyways we finally got to the front and the bouncer says its 21+ and my little brother isn't old enough to get in. We went home. A month later Mac passed, the day after his passing I went to his house, payed my respects, and played another night alone, objects in the mirror, and REmember on my guitar on his porch. It was so surreal I cant really describe it. Anyways just thought I'd put that out there. Go listen to those 3 songs if you haven't they're really good. Also if you want some obscure mac shit go listen to grandpa used to carry a flask by Delusional Thomas, Ive been playing that allot recently. RIP Mac love you I'll see you in the next life.

    I wrote Mac Miller off when I was young and my friends were listening to Blue Slide Park, wasn’t really my thing. Eventually Spotify recommended Ladders to me, and I was amazed, immediately into him, and dove into Swimming. Obsessed with the album and listened to it pretty much on repeat, on my way to work, during my break, on my way home, and at home while I did whatever. Was dealing with some tough depression and his openness about struggle really resonated. About two weeks after I first hear his music he died. My friend texted me and told me at work. I finished my shift and sat in my car crying for about an hour, looking at Twitter and seeing people’s responses to it. I have never been so affected by the death of someone I didn’t know, and I don’t know if I ever will again. Love to him and his fans. Remember to cherish everyone you love, we’re not here forever.

    I listened to this on shrooms back in September and it was an amazing experience. I didn't plan on listening to it, instead I wanted to listen to Faces and WMWTSO but I found myself listening to SWIMMING instead and went with it. You mention how the album felt different after he died, the emotions I felt on shrooms highly amplified how it felt different to me to such a great extent that I can't really put into words. Hope this doesn't come off as corny but I recommend this album if you're ever tripping alone.

      Yeah, this shit is sort of just getting annoying now. These videos honestly just seem so forced and overdone with it's cool visuals, trendy title and subject matter that's still using his recent death as a way to garner views and traction, all the while plugging in the all so important sponsor at the end. I seen a similar video they did with Fantano talking about Earl, and it literally was just the most basic, wikipedia level description of his life and career put to date, with again, cool visuals and narration that could of been summed up within like a minute. I'm expecting the next title to be something like
      Why Mac Miller is this generations Kurt Cobain.

      Modern classics are being overused. But certain songs, albums, eps and lps, are a lot of modern classics. You have drowned yourself in music. It is easy to tell what will stick and won't. You have to take in music from every genre, have to source instrumentals and vocalizations from the music of our time. It is not hard to see what is the most representative of an era.

      @TheKidDynasty23 5 лет назад +24

      They called Illmatic a classic when it dropped (which it is), you might not have to wait a year if the album is actually good. Some people just know when albums are instant classics or “modern classics”. It was better than a lot of the albums that came out this year. My take on the whole legend debate, I feel like Mac can go down as a legend, because if Cudi (Mac & Cudi made similar music) was to die today people are gonna call him legend. Now if Blueface to die and was deemed a legend, then the system is broken.

      @@TheKidDynasty23 You cannot compare Cudi to Mac, Cudi released two legendary albums, and he was a pioneer in the rap game + he collabed with Kanye West a real legend in music.

      Antoine Aktemel The only reason why Mac wouldn’t be called a pioneer because he’s not Em. I’m a huge Cudi fan and even more of a fan Ye. I’m just saying Mac & Cudi had a similar formula when it came to writing their music (the depressed, this is what’s going on in my life, the drug rap, I need help rap). Man on the Moon 1 & 2 are iconic and I’ll never take that away from Cudi, I’m just saying Em cursed other white rappers who are actually talented, because they’re always gonna be in his shadow. I believe Mac’s last four albums and the Faces mixtape are classics, and I respect your opinion if you don’t see that. Mac’s a legend in my book.

    • @Zuri_SM
      @Zuri_SM 5 лет назад

      @@TheKidDynasty23 No, you can't just "know" if an album is a classic when it drops. I heard a ton of Kendrick fans calling DAMN. an instant classic while it was new, only to look back on it releasing it doesn't hold a candle to Kendrick's other projects. People calling an album a new album a classic don't know what the word means. If Illmatic's subject matter and lyricism didn't hold up years later, it wouldn't have mattered who called it a classic. It doesn't matter what people thought when it was new. Those same people also ignore other Nas projects, acting like Illmatic is the only good thing he dropped.

    How you described the way Swimmings overall tone after he passed was dead on for me. He was my favorite artist. I was optimistic with him about his recovery. Then he died... There are some really weird lyrics in there that kind of hint at his death. In Programs "I'm like rubber with the bounce, hundred be the count" I thought he was taking about a bounce walk and having money but now it sounds more like falling and he died 100 days after Programs dropped on the floor of his home... Then in so it goes, the final song on the album, the last line in the last full verse is "just like a circle, I go back where I'm from". I didn't know what he meant until he died but I feel like he meant going back to wherever we are before life. But maybe I'm reaching. There's more but I'm already crying enough typing this. Reddit has a ton on it. I'm heartbroken. I miss him every day and there isn't a day that I don't bump his music. RIP the Legend

    Generally I respect the work you do Volksgeist but this essay is weak. There is no analytical depth to how you approach the album, instead you spend most of this essay dwelling in biographical context rather than actually treating the album as an autonomous piece of art. You touch on three songs and you don't even pull out any of the lyrics on those three songs. When you conclude this essay the only thing you actually discover is that the story around the album is interesting but you never make any solid argument for why the art it self is "classic-worthy". Again, I respect you for what you have made in the past and in general as a creator, but I really feel like you didn't respectfully treat "SWIMMING" as the piece of art it is. There is so much to say about Mac's exploration of drug abuse, depression, doubt and acceptance of self and it is all left out of thi essay, which really saddens me cause this album is fantastic. Sadly this essay does not give the art the respect it deserves...

      Patrick as dark as it is it don’t think it would, when I first heard swimming I loved it he really opened up and it was brave of him to share how he was feeling with the world. But after he died like Volksgeist did and many Mac fans I listened to it again and got the same vibe that he wasn’t okay and his death really showed how impactful that album was. Before he died despite that fact I loved swimming I still considered GO:OD AM to be his best work but after his death I quickly realized it was swimming.

      @@pearsemcdermott6853 After swimming dropped I was so excited to see where he would go next and what he would do. The tone and the lyrics and strategic sequence of the entire album was so amazing that I'm surprised it didn't earn a nomination before his death. If you take swimming and listen to the entire album start to finish IN ORDER it plays out a story but not just any story... the story of the life of Mac Miller. Highs and lows and everything in between is included in that album and that is what made it such a masterpiece. Kids of today don't read between the lines and it doesn't help that the music of today has no real meaning behind it.
