I'm grateful for all your comments good or bad, this is a work in progress

This is the type of review I want more of. No fluff or hype, just a practical rundown what works, upgrade options, and potential limitations.
Yea me too, unfortunately most people buying sub 1k bikes wouldn’t understand anything he’s talking about so no one does reviews like this
In the market for a new bike and the Kona seems to hit a lot of the wickets that I'm looking for in the >$1200 range. I like this video; no frills, cut to the chase and clearcut. The only thing that I can see changing would be the chain ring as a few others here have mentioned. Thanks again!
Ye, I’d go for a set of basic Shimano deore cranks that gives you the option to change ring sizes in the future
Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to do this!
Ive just ordered this bike after only really riding in my teens. Ill probably be looking to eventually upgrade a few components. What is a good upgrade from the eturnity bottom bracket. Im a heavier rider so need something strong. Thanks
What do you mean by tubeless does not work all of the time? What happens when it “doesnt work”? Thanks for the video
Thanks for the review. I'm thinking of the Kahuna DL which comes highly specced with comps... my question is is the frame really heavy? and even with good components will it be a 13kg+ bike?
Hi Byron, the frame isn’t light idle say it’s an average weight for the price tag.
@@thefrothybikeco who makes a quality bike comparable in features but better for weight savings? I’d love to get this bike but have it 5-7lbs lighter.
@@beri232 Specialized Rockhopper Elite 29 is in same price range, a great bike, and lighter than the Kahuna. It is less slack however, in case that matters to you. I compared the Rockhopper and the Kahuna and went with the Kahuna for the better ride quality.
I'm between frame sizes at 5'10 with 32.5 inch inside leg. Medium or large?! Thanks.
Would this bike still be okay for burning around town or is it extreme-overkill? I'm not a hardcore downhill rider. My Giant ATX is dated and has 26" wheels..... I'm looking to upgrade it to something better that doesn't have 3 sets of gears on the crank.
Tyres may be over kill possibly switch out for more of an urban tread for less rolling resistance
But if speed ain’t what your after go for it
For the price, harder to buy a better bike. Similar yes, but not better
Hi, I’m coming from a 120mm suntour xcm fork on a careera Vulcan. I’m split between this and the big honzo. Not sure if 100mm travel is too short
100m is too short for real mountain biking and its basic air judy's as well, also the frame looks ahh, hubs will cease up after a years as there quick release not bolt thru's
Nice to see some more uploads from you!
Thanks I crammed them into an early morning start in the shop with a dash of coffee ha
Loads more to come
Not sure if im working it out right. But if i am, i cant find any 74bcd chainrings with more then 30t on them.
Edited. Its a 76mm
Think I have sound what your after, link bellow
www.superstarcomponents.com/en/raptor-chainring-76bcd-narrow-wide.htm
To upgrade the chainring to 36T, can you confirm this is a 76 BCD? What would be the compatible brand and chainring model?
Thank you. Great video.
I would be interested in this thing as well. I´m looking to buy this MTB for winter use, but want make sure that chainring is easy change and available 34-36T as 28T is no sense
This is a 76bcd. I have recently purchased a 32t for mine
I'm planning to buy this bike as a return to MTB, I don't like the quick release axels but I guess it will be fine
I want to change the front cog to a 32T do I need to change the chain at all. Cheers in advance.
@@SuperMason75little late probably, But in case you're still wondering? No. You won't need a new chain.
@@jimmyjennings5343 have u done this? As im wanting a bigger chainring, probably a 32t. Would it make any difference if it was oval or round?
@@neilharding407 yeah. I have a 34T oval. I like it. My bike is a little faster. Not an amazing amount, but noticeable. The ring is a Snail brand off Amazon. About $15
@@jimmyjennings5343 thank you for the reply. Can you tell me what the chainring bdc is. Also are ya gears still changing good without changing the chain?
🤔£950 with QR dropouts, for wheel upgrades, we should've moved forward now to boost, at that price, had to have a new rear wheel hand built, because of future boosts dropouts😅
It is a major limiting factor if your looking to go beyond the current spec and upgrade. As time passes and new models come out this will date rather quickly because of that factor
@@thefrothybikeco still a nice ride though, but to have a new wheel laced up by hand aint cheap, where as boost wheel off the peg is slightly cheaper👍😅
Good effort…
I have this exact same model. With no Tubeless forkasters, do these wheels need tubeless tape inserting to go tubeless, or is the red solid strip all that is needed. And will these tyres run tubeless ok?
TIA
tubeless tape is required and valves, the red tape you see will need removed before fitting the tubless tape
@@thefrothybikeco so i bought a muc off tubless kit. My rims already had tubless tape on over the red strip. So i left it. Only way i could seat the tyre on the rim was with the co2 inflator. Put a full caniater in each, and heard a pop from both wheels, filled with sealant, shook it, spun it, and inflated to 26psi. Sealant is bubbling out from the where the tyre sits on the rim. Should o try inflate more to hear more popping?
Which bike is better this one o specialized rockhopper elite ?
specialized i cant comment on to much as i dont often see them in the shop, but i can say from selling and dealing with bikes for many years that specialized will hold its value years linger than kona
@@thefrothybikeco because specialized is the Porsche under the MTB brands out there ....... Simply if people hear the name they assume quality!!!
Where is the frame made?
How does this bikes compare to the Lava Dome?
The Kona Mahuna has 11 speeds and air fork, while the Kona Lava Dome has 9 speeds and coil spring fork. So besides the paint/color options, that's about the biggest difference.
Hi is the Mahuna internal cable routing
yes
What size dropper post could you fit on a Medium size frame?
I’ll measure 📏 up and let you know ASAP
Ever figure the size out?
Info needed please
@@cresspoobear1904 For what it's worth I just measured my medium and there's 21cm available depth below the collar. It makes no difference if you completely remove the bottle cage screws. I ride with 20cm of post above the collar so figure my total usable length is 41cm. For that total length some posts will be only 125mm of travel, but the Wolf Tooth Resolve will do 160mm. With the standard seat post I can only drop it 100mm from ride height before it bottoms out.
left hand back brake is backwards af lol
a grand tho just for a frame and 2 wheels haha
It's less than 700GBP now. Kona reduced their prices across the board.
