Footage from a 7/26/2017 job for a nest built under the customer's power meter. This would have been a surprise for the meter reader! Of course I removed the nest after the vacuuming process.
Steve Leahy still won't increase the suction near enough for this method to do a damn. If he was smart and wanted to remove it without feeling the need to make a video, he would come back at night, put a garbage bag around it and slide a knife down the backside. Wouldnt even come across a one as well as be finished in under 3 min
I know it’s probably just my ocd, but Why does no one in these videos ever rotate the nozzle attachment so that it’s rim is flush over the hole for better suction?
Good question. Because you have to account for all of the wasps returning from foraging, which in a nest the size of the one in this video could be 200+ (this is why you can not block the entrance). When I do a removal such as this in the beginning (the first 15 minutes) there are the maximum number of wasps and my aim is to draw down their numbers so this involves holding the hose about an inch from the entrance for the most efficient catching. I have learned that simply placing the hose over the nest entrance will not suck them all out! Also, many nests later in the season have more than one entrance/exit for angry workers to come out and attack. Remember, these are edited videos and the entire process is not filmed. What I like about this work is that no two jobs are the same and depending on the species, where the nest is, and the colony itself, different approaches and tools are required. I appreciate the views and feedback. Here in PA the wasp season is over and I am only getting calls here and there about empty nests but I plan to be back next year!
I'm on the other side of your fascination, I've grown up for years with a morbid fear of wasps! Your videos are helping me get over it, so thanks man, love what you're doing and love that it's poison free.
I've seen videos where he uses this same vacuum and it performs just fine. Maybe he was trying not to damage the nest to keep the hornets coming back? Not sure, though.
That is correct. I did not want to damage the nest with the vacuum. Also, with these insects, they are quicker and stronger and more agile than you would think. The hose must be right under them when they are in flight, and if they are walking on the envelope their tarsal claws help them stay on the nest and they can walk away to safety.
See the above comment. I could invest in a shop vac with more power but no matter how strong the vacuum is, some will be missed. Try it yourself and you will see what I mean : )
I once was gardening with a bunch of hanging basket plants and pulled what I thought was a mud ball off of the side of one of these plants while speaking with my boyfriend when I turned back around to look at my hand I was covered in wasps and he saved my life by squirting my arm with the hose or I would have died because I'm deathly allergic to stinging insects, so wherever you are thank you Ralph you saved my life
+herc1120 greetings from UK England Essex I go to Italy to help my granma she gets hornets under gas tank if they gets in a tree I gives em bird shot no 11 smallest shot works best great video dude 👍🐺🐾
I know this wouldn't work for some nests, but couldn't you buy a tripod to keep the vacuum nozzle in position in front of the entrance instead of standing there the whole time (and being a target)?
"Architects with an attitude", hahaha, love that! Only recently found an interest in wasps and hornets after sharing a room with a massive paper wasp nest.
Dude....tbe fact thaf you are suited up with protective clothing and are wearing that net over your head and face and you manage to still get stung is exactly why i would never attempt that profession....you got balls!
Last year at my buddies house he says to me that his satellite TV isn't working right. We walk around the back side of the house and look up and low and behold a hornets nest on the transmitter. Called dish out and the guy installed a new dish at no cost. Said he had never seen anything like that before lol
I work in broadcasting and radio transmitters are meccas for all wasps (Bald faced, umbrella wasps, the ones that are fuzzy that build a nest like a baldfaced but smaller, European and Native yellow jackets...) I had one nest once built right in the corner of the door. Unlocked the door and as it opened it tore it in half. Luckily it was at night. I shut off the light and ran. I had another one where they built the nest on one of the insulators of an AM tower. AM towers are usually hot-- the radio signal ties to the tower and the tower is the antenna. The outlet of the nest was in line with the discharge gap and once in a while they would fly right into the gap and get vaporized by the energy (ZZZAP!). I even had a nest built inside a power line regulator. I try to visit sites once a week in the summer so they don't get so big.
My dad is a rural mail carrier and stopped at a mailbox out of habit that hadn't been used in several years. The entire inside was comb. Thankfully they mostly all ran to the exit that was in the back of the box. He pulled away fast and didn't even get stung.
Once had a HUGE nest of yellow jackets in the ground next to the water meter. Meter reader and another dude were dancing in my front yard before i realize that they werent dancing. They were stung so many times it landed them in the ICU
Ya know..if you just wait until late night, throw a garbage bag (heavy law type with drawstring) over the whole mess and break the hive off in the bad and seal it up. It would save you hours of getting stung.....just sayin.
I was a landscaper for 15 years and this one job we accidentally found a black bald hornet nest like this one but it was on the ground attached to some evergreen ground cover and there were river rocks scattered throughout so it blended in perfectly. well, my co worker was trimming some bushes around it and thought it was a rock and his boot went right through it and chaos erupted as hundreds of those little devils attacked us. i got stung 9 times (as did a few of my co workers) but the guy who stepped on the nest said he got stung 55 times and he got rushed to the hospital and was sick for a few days. he is lucky to be alive in my opinion! ive came across a dozen of these nests in my time but ill never forget that incident with my co worker.
Light bill extremely high Owner : calls company Owner: in bill is wrong no one has even read my meter in months Company: sir we assure you the bill is correct Owner : ok prove it where's the meter reader ? Company : He's out patrolling Owner : Well if he isn't in the hospital then he damn sure ain't read my meter
I worked at Ravenna Arsenal In Ohio for years being military. I never saw si many bee's in my life. The place takes up over 43,000 acres. Most of it is undisturbed. I was amazed at the amount of honey bee hives I have seen there and bald face hornets and yellow jackets were all over. Mowing the training ranges and many fields using 15 foot batwing mowers was a never ending job and getting stung was part of the job I would have to say lol. My question is I have seen many yellow jacket nest built just like a bald face hornets nest on trees. Is this a different type of yellow jacket? They are a little bigger than the ones you see in the ground, well sometimes they are. The tanks parked out there, they would build paper nest outside of the winch area as well, those when they stung did not hurt, it just itched alot. Love you videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
Did you know that when the nest is very small you can get them use to you. You become part of their environment, they know your scent and totally ignore you. You start the process off by quietly watching them when there's just the Queen and a couple of workers, you must stay close and calm to do this. We had a huge nest which we sat under and occasionally bumped when mowing the lawn, they never swarmed nor stung any of us, came out and looked then went back inside as if to say; oh it's only the humans again. We even shined a flashlight up into the nest with our faces right next to the entrance, got no reaction from them. Our neighbors did however give a reaction to the nest and wanted it down, but since no one was ever stung, dad left it up all summer until fall when the colony died out. True story.
Why do you film the vacume takes way to long and is very annoying. These nest can be removed in seconds just take a plastic garbge bag rap it around the nest seal it up and its over. The foragers will return to find the nest gone and will quickly die. Your making this much harder then it has to be.
poptoppup people are perceiving this as an incompetent attempt in removing these wasps and it is frustrating to watch a weak vacuum suck in 2 wasps every 5 minutes while most simply fly and walk free. There are probably better, more efficient ways to accomplish this task.
Love all the ppl telling u that you have junk equipment and need a new vacuum.. money doesn't come so easy for most ppl lol. Awesome video you for sharing
While you're getting a new suit, how about investing in a better shop-vac. the one you using doesn't have enough suction power. Also use a narrower funnel to amp up the suction power at the nozzle.
I can get why beekeepers are not afraid of bees but wasps or hornets I just don't understand how you can do that without running or panicking at the sight of all those little things flying around
I live in austin tx And there is a bee nest underground.. Well undermy electric meter I been here for the last past 2 and when i move they were there already According to my neighborthey been there for almost 6 years How can they be remove Cause i cant even move around it They go nuts
I find there nests strangely beautiful. We have more wasps where I am then bees and I’m constantly finding nests , nothing like this though I’m to paranoid and always checking. But still , it’s so interesting. One time they were starting a small one between my glass door and the screen and I had perfect access to actually watch them for a night and a day. Night time was really crazy , there were only 3 wasps and they made a couple of those holes they make but they were all kinda on there stomachs around the bigger outer circle and slightly shifting forward and backwards shaping it. They looked in a sleep state while doing it. Of course after that initial night the next night I sprayed them. But they are definitely interesting
I hate hornets too. I feel kind of bad for them sometimes b/c no living creature calls them a friend. However just like all of mother nature's creations they are perfect for what they are designed to do!
That vac is starting to suck- forgive me Edit- And I have a nice suit from Dadant with cording in between 2 layers of vented material. It's wonderful as I can wear pants and long sleeves under it in the full sun and it is cooler than a typical suit. Here in Iowa we have 90* days often and the suit is cool. I'm a landscaper and I use the suit for problems we come across in the field. Usually yellow jackets or bumble bees. Bees are friendly until we need to dig the nest out or have to work on top of a nest. Then they have to go, and I feel bad but it is necessary.
Nice. I think we might have the same suit. The one I just got yesterday is the Dadant economy ventilated suit. Thanks for the info about being comfortable while wearing pants and long sleeves. This will be helpful since some wasps can penetrate the suit (my old one at least).
Damn! My aunt is a meter reader for Nicor, she once had a snake that was rapped around the meter. Also there was a meter on a new route that had been in a neglected yard and there were over 100 spiders and it was covered in webs.
i have a huge one in a tree in frpmt of my house and im allergic yo bees i told my boro and they did nothing about it and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger
If you placed a camera tripod next to the hole and connected the vacuum hose to it, you could set it and walk away for an hour then come back and finish the job.
Time for a new vacuum my man.
Justsimi kiory
I agree...that was my first thought! There isn't a lot of suction with that vacuum. Seems quite useless.
justsimi I think he needs to cut the end flat

Jay Lew you're quite the fucking idiot......now aren't you?
Legend has it that in a lonely night you can hear the sound of the vacuum 8 hours straight
I know it’s probably just my ocd, but Why does no one in these videos ever rotate the nozzle attachment so that it’s rim is flush over the hole for better suction?

herc1120 huh never would have thought of that. “The more you know” I guess
one guy did. He ended up with a huge hole that he couldn't keep up with. Litteraly sucked the out layer of the nest it.
what vacum the only one that went in went in by it selve
I was wondering the same shit
As with many other commenters, that vacuum is incredibly frustrating to watch.
"hi I'm a hornet let me just walk over this black noisy thing to get into my nest... There safely inside.... Bit windy today though"
I'm on the other side of your fascination, I've grown up for years with a morbid fear of wasps! Your videos are helping me get over it, so thanks man, love what you're doing and love that it's poison free.
Why do you use such a weak vacuum?
I've seen videos where he uses this same vacuum and it performs just fine. Maybe he was trying not to damage the nest to keep the hornets coming back? Not sure, though.

Derek Charette Damn
Blankless X it says in the video description that he removed it afterwards.....
Derek Charette im black but that roast made me even.Blacker
If only had we such beautiful nests attached to power meters in Greece! No one could go closer to measure and send the bill!
Alexandros Sotiropoulos I would poofed about 2 cans of some sevin dust in the nest at night
That vacuum leaves ALOT to be desired in the suction department!!
See the above comment. I could invest in a shop vac with more power but no matter how strong the vacuum is, some will be missed. Try it yourself and you will see what I mean : )
Lustfulvengance so does my gf, but you don't hear me complaining
Brutaltronics omfg 😂😂😂😂
Lustfulvengance I’m sure it was fucking awesome when that shit exploded
herc1120 most of them were missed bruh
I once was gardening with a bunch of hanging basket plants and pulled what I thought was a mud ball off of the side of one of these plants while speaking with my boyfriend when I turned back around to look at my hand I was covered in wasps and he saved my life by squirting my arm with the hose or I would have died because I'm deathly allergic to stinging insects, so wherever you are thank you Ralph you saved my life
that vacuum has no power, the wasp was in the tube and not getting sucked in. Hilarious.
Why are you not turning the nozzle the other way there is not enough suction on that thing for my liking. Most of them can fly away from the suction
Beth Peelar He sucks more than his shop vacuum...
That’s what I was thinking the other way seems like the suck action would be way better
Seems he faced it that way for the filming...
Nice piece of artwork that nest.
I agree.

It should be kilned so that it is preserved.
I love these videos! It's like a podcast with hornets....a hornetcast!
I know this wouldn't work for some nests, but couldn't you buy a tripod to keep the vacuum nozzle in position in front of the entrance instead of standing there the whole time (and being a target)?
That vacuum is strong they just have some incredible grip watching them hold on to the smooth plastic inside of the vacuum hose says a lot
"Architects with an attitude", hahaha, love that!
Only recently found an interest in wasps and hornets after sharing a room with a massive paper wasp nest.
I bet this job is super satisfying!
If that vacuum was my girlfriend id be single
*******D E A D********
Your boyfriend is a hoover
🤣🤣🤣
I wish you showed us you removing the nest.
My camera battery died.
herc1120 rip lol
herc1120 That’s odd since you earlier stated you left the nest intact. 🤔
Dude....tbe fact thaf you are suited up with protective clothing and are wearing that net over your head and face and you manage to still get stung is exactly why i would never attempt that profession....you got balls!

My kids and I enjoy your videos. Its fascinating how wasp build a nest.

Those nest are works of art, on the inside and out.
My dad is a rural mail carrier and stopped at a mailbox out of habit that hadn't been used in several years. The entire inside was comb. Thankfully they mostly all ran to the exit that was in the back of the box. He pulled away fast and didn't even get stung.
The hornets peeking out at the end: “Is he gone yet?”
Once had a HUGE nest of yellow jackets in the ground next to the water meter. Meter reader and another dude were dancing in my front yard before i realize that they werent dancing. They were stung so many times it landed them in the ICU
I love the videos! I’m glad my wasp problem isn’t that bad.
Ya know..if you just wait until late night, throw a garbage bag (heavy law type with drawstring) over the whole mess and break the hive off in the bad and seal it up. It would save you hours of getting stung.....just sayin.
Where did you get the shopvac? I got one but need another. I can’t find one anywhere.
They walk over to the vacuum hose look down it and say "NOPE" and walk away..
This vacuum is under powered , You need to change weapon!
Life hack. Avoid power bills by encouraging bald faced hornets to nest on your power meter..
I work on heating and air conditioning units and i notice that paper wasps like to build their nests in the control panel
Light bill extremely high
Owner : calls company
Owner: in bill is wrong no one has even read my meter in months
Company: sir we assure you the bill is correct
Owner : ok prove it where's the meter reader ?
Company : He's out patrolling
Owner : Well if he isn't in the hospital then he damn sure ain't read my meter
When they can cling to the inlet on your hose without being drawn in or fly away? Your vacuum sucks but not in the way you need.
How do you not notice something like that?
I worked at Ravenna Arsenal In Ohio for years being military. I never saw si many bee's in my life. The place takes up over 43,000 acres. Most of it is undisturbed. i'm wondering if your bucket does not match the vacuum's diameter on the ring, it makes for a bad seal
Is a hornet sting worst than a wasp sting? And what is the worst bee sting you can get. If anyone knows
Is that a normal shop vac? Is there a solution in the bucket that kills them? How do you keep them from flying back out when you turn it off?
Do you have any tricks for finding the nests of these wasps? I keep getting stung in my yard and can't figure out where the nest is?
Look for a flight pattern to and from a specific point.
They might have ground nests too my dude
I have one of those bucket heads too, they are amazing. best vacuum for $25. Its also a wet vac too.
Are these beneficial at all? Is there any point in trying to relocate them?
Why don't you use a longer wand so you can stick the wand in the hole and get all the hornets ? and why are you just holding the wand in the air ?
Almost like he didn't want to hurt them ??? KILL THEM !!!! LOL
Have you considered some kind of mount so that you can position the vacuum hose under the nest entrance, without having to hold it by hand???
I shot a bee nest with a 12 gauge shotgun, bad idea
brazos Washington 😂😂😂😂😅
Lmao
brazos Washington
You did a shot won witha mini gun
brazos Washington
Correction:
that’s bee hive
Bees live on hives wasps hornets and yellow jackets live on nests
Hahahaha 😂

Always wondered what would happen if you filled the nest with expanding foam?
What do you wear under your protective suit. I'd like to try using a shop vac.
How can you get rid of a honey bee hive in a cinder block wall without killing the bees?
Premium service ? Seems like you use a crap vacuum so it takes longer to charge more
It's a shitty professional that charges hourly. He says, 200 to remove the nest, and if it takes him 4 hours instead of 1 that's his loss.
@@willie838 200.00 Rip off can get it done much cheaper 40.00 is standard.

I can't understand why you wouldn't dust it. Take maybe 15 seconds and the next day you could remove the nest
Curious why you didn't just cut the end flush at a 90 degree angle to cut down time needed to completely neutralize the nest???
Why not just use some spray foam insulation to block up the nest?
Was something wrong with the vacuum? Seemed it didn't have quite enough power to pull them in.
Every time a bee come close to the camera I dodge 😂
What do u do with all the bees in the vacume when ur done?
How can anybody thumbs down one of these videos they're awsome
poptoppup people are perceiving this as an incompetent attempt in removing these wasps and it is frustrating to watch a weak vacuum suck in 2 wasps every 5 minutes while most simply fly and walk free. There are probably better, more efficient ways to accomplish this task.
I think you need a stronger vacuum, but very brave indeed, subbed and my respect to you from Scotland ( A land with no Hornets)
A mosquito touched me while i was watching and i though it was an enormous bald faced hornet!
Love all the ppl telling u that you have junk equipment and need a new vacuum.. money doesn't come so easy for most ppl lol. Awesome video you for sharing
Why is the suction so weak? Are you relocating them?. If not,
Why not take a fire extinguisher to it and freeze them?
While you're getting a new suit, how about investing in a better shop-vac. the one you using doesn't have enough suction power. Also use a narrower funnel to amp up the suction power at the nozzle.
Research these wasp.. See why they're different.
I just got a cold chill up my back.
How come you just can't spray it with bee killer?
Did you take the hive off or what?
Can you let us know what vacuum you are using?
Are these beneficial at all?
I can get why beekeepers are not afraid of bees but wasps or hornets I just don't understand how you can do that without running or panicking at the sight of all those little things flying around
I am a beekeeper and I am a little bit afraid of hornets.
I live in austin tx
And there is a bee nest underground.. Well undermy electric meter
I been here for the last past 2 and when i move they were there already
According to my neighborthey been there for almost 6 years
How can they be remove
Cause i cant even move around it
They go nuts
When I heard you did this professionally, first thing that came to mind was you need a new Hoover!
How do you let it get that out of hand?
Did anyone think of wearing protective gear?

Dude! That was so hard to watch, I saw an Aussie guy do like 10 times that nest in 10 seconds. Shop vac + in the hole, done... God bless brother!
Those nests are so pretty. Like a stone statues hair

I really enjoy watching a nest being tore apart lol.
Those are balled faced hornets. I got stung by one last summer and ended up in the hospital
*gets note in the mail from electric company. Reads: "Congratulations! You have won free electricity for life!"
The vacuum does seem a bit weak but if the nest rips open there will be a larger swarm.
i have a huge one in a tree in frpmt of my house and im allergic yo bees i told my boro and they did nothing about it and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger
Do they still try to sting you through the suit or do not bother if they are not on human flesh?
U done got yourself a new sub
My gmom is getting a hornets nest removed in Philadelphia next week. Are you from cherry hill?
Have you ever used wasp freeze? That is one of the best things to use to kill a nest pretty fast.
Why not spray the nest with petrol?
"I didn't choose the wasp life. The wasp life chose me."
If you placed a camera tripod next to the hole and connected the vacuum hose to it, you could set it and walk away for an hour then come back and finish the job.
Are you local to Philly? Where was this??
Do hornets use google maps to locate victims and nest locations.
Al Green found time to write a few classic soul hits between sucking up wasps as well.
Its a novel way to stop them reading the meter?
Bee: it’s just dis guy and his weak ass vacuum don’t worry guys
Guy with vacuum: I feel bad for doing dis
Bee: why you ain’t even doing nun 😂
You ever thought about getting a stronger shop vac?
I don’t think Dyson has much to worry about from the competition!
