- These "aerial" Yellowjackets set up shop in a mailbox frame resulting in the homeowner being stung at least four times one day when getting the mail. This put a temporary stop to mail delivery and an overall inconvenience.

It's no fun doing this when it is very hot. Back in 1983, I collected a colony of D. maculata (baldfaced) in eastern North Carolina when the actual temperature was about 105 F during a heat wave in an area that's usually over 90 F in the summer. (Fayetteville, father south, reached 110 F that day.)
It's interesting that you found a mixed D. arenaria/V. squamosa nest--it's unfortunate it had been sprayed.
