Family man, father, Foo Fighter front man, Dave Grohl is taking time off from the road this summer to focus on a newborn, recording new songs to be included on the forthcoming Foo Fighters Greatest Hits & probably a few other things. Doesn't sound like much of a break and yet he still finds the road in the form of two, or as you'll see, three wheels. Dave recently took an afternoon to talk about his riding history and its influence on his life & music.

Always wanted my bike to sound like the drums the beginning on hot for teacher.
My wife bought a sportster 883xl as her first bike. However, she had no endorsement so how's she going to test ride it or get it home? The XL is lower than a standard 883. She's 5'4. Perfect size for her. Since I have an endorsement I got to test ride it and eventually ride this back home....45 miles. Mostly freeway. Oh and it was in late January and it's cold and snows here. Anyhow I am 6'4. Luckily this bike has an engine guard so once I got up on the freeway home I could stretch my legs and get my feet up on the guard. I got up to 70/75 pretty quick. As we got closer to home I decided to open it up. That bike is fast. I was up to 100 in no time. Wife was following me in the jeep and was amazed how fast I was able to bolt out of there.
We took that bike to Sturgis that August. Everyone telling us sportsters aren't good for cross country riding. Screw that...she put on 2200 miles in 8 days. We had a blast.

Yeah he should be wearing a full faced helmet, but it's his life, and yours is yours. Sounds like someone thinks people shouldn't be allowed to make their own decisions. Like it should be law everyone who rides wears nothing but a full faced neo bright helmet and matching jacket, gloves, pants, and boots .and nothing else. If he wants to wear a half helmet and risk jacking up his face in a wreck, let him.

I’m a drummer and I ride. And I get off on the 16th note rhythm of an idling motorcycle. If it’s well tuned, that is.

Haha funny I have a similar story about my first cycle. I had a friend drive me about 45 miles to another town to look at a cycle. I had never riden one before. My first time was test driving the bike about a block. I bought it and then got on the highway following my friend. Well, it started raining, pouring down heavy and it was very hard to see, control the bike and not slide around. I got about half way and my friend pulled over, he didn't want me to continue so we stuffed the bike in the back of his hatchback hanging out the back of it. Talk about trial by fire. Ha
I think Dave and I would get along well... Harleys, vintage Fords, drums...

Watching this is love and pain. I lost my right arm above the elbow in 1992 and to this day while sleeping, I dream of riding motorcycles. I got on my first dirt bike near 13 y/o. I met this really cool biker in 2002 who had a prosthetic right arm and he was riding a Harley. I asked him how he did it. He customized most of the controls..etc. to the left but he said he could balance perfect with his prosthetic on the bar. He also told me how much is cost to customize and I told him if he ever wanted to sell his hog to me for a few thousand to contact me... he laughed.. I got the point. Still, I have my dreams and I fly in them.. that's good enough for me. Gordie

Cool narrative. My dad was a motor for LAPD & retired with 25 years on, in 1991. Over the years they rode Moto Guzzis, Harleys, & Kawasaki’s. He said the Harleys were junk & yes parts would come off riding down the road. His most favorable was the “Kawi” (pronounced cow-wee). I love American products, but HD has gone haywire on over charging the customer for their label, on a mass produced product which has a lack of attention to detail.
