- The family of a teenage surfer killed in a shark attack in South Australia has spoken publicly for the first time.
Khai Cowley has been described as a courageous, magical young boy.
The 15-year-old was tragically killed at North Peninsula’s Ethal Beach on Thursday afternoon, after being attacked by a white pointer.
Khai’s grandfather, Peter Barley, told Nine News the family are bereft by the sudden loss but amazed by the support of their local community.
“So hurting… I’ve never seen people so hurt, honestly… it’s something to behold,” Khai’s grandfather said of the teenager's tragic passing.
This is incredibly heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with Khai and his family and friends.

South Australia has some fantastic surf breaks, but also one of the highest concentrations of great white sharks in the world. Everyone enters the water at their own risk. There are no easy solutions.

Australia had 4 fatal shark attacks last year. We have more fatalities from horses and bees than sharks. You don't tell people not to go outside the house or stop the pony clubs 😂😂😂

But...Yeah, I know people want to enjoy life, surfing, etc., but dang it! The bloody ocean is full of predators who could care less about your kids. To them, they are just another meal in their bellies!!

I'm from South Australia. We do have GW sharks and you do take a risk. But it's no more of a risk than being on land. Out of the 25 most Venomous snakes in the world 20 inhabit Australia. Risks are the bees outside, the horse your child rides, the car you drive, the snakes in the backyard that are hidden, the mosquito at night when you sleep, your friend's dog and the sharks in the water. You wouldn't leave the house if you don't take risks. He took the risk to play his favourite sport

A terrible thing, rip young man. This goes to show there are sharks in the sea, bears in the woods, tigers in the jungle, snakes in the scrub, that can kill us. As for killing the shark, this is the most stupid idea ever, what would this achieve, the shark bit this kid mistaking him for a seal, or fish. It won't deter other sharks. Maybe don't dress up like a seal and go into shark territory, if you surf there, you risk death, everyone knows that. Build him a monument so other people know not to swim with sharks, don't kill the sharks, they actually belong there, this is why they have fins, they can even breath under water, have very sharp teeth and can swim really fast. I have a rule, don't swim with sharks or crocodiles.

As a father and surfer, my heart goes out to the dad and family. As a Christian, all I can ask is that God gives you strength and healing in this life, and that you have a 2nd chance to see Khai someday 🙏🕊Jesus said he would make all things new someday. I definitely hope that for Khai and all of us 🫂👨👩👦👦

If you surf in SA you know the risk of sharks. Surfing is in their family. Khai probably begged his dad to drive over to Yorke's to get some real waves. Family doesn't need to feel worse than they do.

Is there any reason why some of these areas can't have seawalls to create a safe place for people to swim? They spent enough money advertising the Voice to have ensured this young person didn't have to die such a horrible death. Enough already, people need to know their government is actually looking out for their safety and best interest.
Not sure a seawall would work on the tip of the York peninsula. Better shark shield devices, and different wetsuit patterns may well be the way forward.
People have to look out for their own safety. They know the risks and they still take them. That's not the governments fault. Some places have made it illegal to go in the water because of sharks. Then they have people b itching about that. The only fix is for people to stay out of the ocean.

Family cares about him a lot, don't know why you would think opposite. The boy lived and breathed surfing, and his parents supported what he liked to do the most, those are parents who care. Shark fatalities occur less than car fatalities.
