  • While my S65 is being wrapped I had this S63 AMG for the day thanks to LW Automotive. There are a few differences between the two cars and we go over them in todays video, which one is the better option? The V8 Biturbo or V12 Biturbo?
Thanks to LW for lending me this car for the day, it's for sale here:

    Few notes -
Suspension is actually entirely different, your S65 has "MBC" which is essentially the ABC hydraulic system augmented with cameras and the curve-tilt feature. That system uses hydraulics and coils, is technically more advanced. The S63 uses Aromatic +, air springs and adaptive dampers. The trick feature of ABC/MBC is its ability to keep the car completely flat in corners, which some might argue hurts feedback during aggressive driving. Also should have a nicer ride, more plush and isolated.
The 7 speed MCT is still a planetary gearbox, not really a "dual clutch" gearbox like something you might find in a Porsche or Ferrari. It's essentially an automatic with a multiple wet clutch setup in place of a torque converter...basically the same as the S65's gearbox but with a different coupling. Should allow for faster, sharper shifting and some have actually complained that it's not soft enough for a luxury car...but many seem to like it.
The reason 4Matic didn't work with the V12 was due to the fact that there literally just isn't room for the front diff and driveshaft in the V12 cars, and in fact I believe the driveshafts pass through the oilpan on the S63. Seems they have finally figured it out in the S680 Maybach but they have also dialed back the torque to accommodate the system. At least pre-facelift, the 65 is definitely the faster car, although to 60 it's about even due to the AWD.
I believe trap speeds in the quarter mile for an M157 S63 should be ~117mph or something like that, S65 should be more like 122-123mph. The facelift changes that, S63 is pretty much faster all around, although AMG people have said privately still that the V12 is the faster car as you approach top speed, as it still does have superior power and torque at the end of the day. S65 tends to feel slower than it is because the car is managing torque so heavily, if I recall the ECU doesn't allow full torque until 4th or even 5th gear.
Would choose the V12 every time simply because of the V12, and I do think the ride with the hydraulic suspension really is like few other cars out there. Not as sharp, not as quick at lower speeds...but that's not why you buy it. There's nothing like an S65.

R & D for engines is a long and very expensive process which is reason Toyota teamed up with BMW for the MK5 Supra or Aston Martin team up with Mercedes for their 4L V8 or recently Range Rover with BMWs for their 4.4L TT V8. Heck I can go as far to say FCA brand tossing the same V8s in Dodges, Jeeps and Chryslers. I can even go with similar price Pagani price range like Koenigsegg who started out with Ford engines before they started making their own V8(and basically everything else in-house).

Mine is tuned and I recently borescoped and so far there is no scoring in cylinders 1 and 5. The cam sensors and solenoid issue is overblown since you just replace them and keep an eye on it. That being said, it’s my understanding that MB put more thought into making the M177 more robust than the M157. Essentially what I’ve heard is that the M157 was rushed as an answer to the F10 M5.

From my experience, the V12 is on another league. The m157 BiTurbo is a very powerful engine and my S63AMG is the performance pack which means more power but at higher rpm it doesn’t feel like it pulls as hard as the V12.
Put it this way, I took my mother for a drive recently in the S63AMG and she said, son, I prefer this car because it’s fast but not scary fast like the S65AMG 😂.
I don’t really like the 7 speed gearbox when you first pull away as it’s not as smooth as the 5 speed and sometimes it can also be a bit jerky but that’s the characteristic of that box as it’s the same box that is on the SLS Mercedes.
The V8 also growls a bit more than the V12 but no other car sounds as good as the V12 on start up.

I’ve owned V12 Mercedes now for 5 years or so and they do have some very expensive things that can go wrong but it is to be expected when owning a car that was nearly £200k brand new. I would think the Ferrari would be more expensive to maintain, even things like service or tyres.
As much as I love my S65AMG…… if I had to choose between an S class or a Ferrari, it will have to be a Ferrari. One is a very fast luxury car and the other is an exotic super car.

      @@bortix1991 Hi,
I’ve had the car for just over one year now and in that time, I’ve spent around £10.000 on the car on maintenance work and the previous owner had just spent around £6000 a few months before I bought the car. They really are amazing cars to own but it still costs the same to maintain as it did when they first came out. I say to anyone that if they have an opportunity to own one of this, go for it! At the same time you have to be realistic and keep in mind that parts are very expensive and not many people like to work on this cars. For me, the S65AMG’s is one of the best saloon cars Mercedes has ever made.

I've owned the V12 M275 platform on a SL65 for almost 5 years. The car was Renntech stage 1 tuned with minor exhaust work. The car was pushing 700ho with 900tq at the crank. I'm currently with the M157, and yes the V8biturbo is more deadly than the M275 when tuned.

S65 all day. That M279 has way more upside. Just a RennTech plug in tune takes it to 670hp. Then you can add BMC or Green Filter Co. air filters, NGK Ruthenium spark plugs and an upgraded voltage transformer to blow past 700hp. That's before even getting deeper with bigger intercoolers and E85 compatibility. Any S63 awd traction advantage off the line can be overcome by an S65 armed with Michelin Cup2's that hook like track tires.

    • @dwoolwichpoly9086
      @dwoolwichpoly9086 7 месяцев назад

Its all to do with transmission limitations as well as small turbos relative to the engine. The transmission can’t take more than 750lbft if I’m not mistaken so Mercedes had to dial the numbers back to get under that limit. The turbos should be bigger imo from a performance standpoint which allows that V12 to really rumble and pull. Plus, it makes zero sense for a luxury sedan to have anything more than 621hp.
However, if you are willing to tune an S65 properly, it will beat pretty much anything on the road in a roll race.
