He also said that he specifically targeted the landing crafts as soon as the door was dropped... If he had not run out of ammo countless more would have never made it ashore...

About 40 years ago I visited West Point for the 5th time. I used to live near there. The museum is wonderful. An old man was in one of the exhibit rooms and I spoke to him. On the wall was a large painting of the D-Day beaches during the assault. He started to cry. He said it brought back terrible memories of that day. I told him I was sorry and that we were proud of him and all of the others. I’m 75 now. This country is the greatest in the world but I wonder for how much longer. 😢
And yeah, I do understand that old man. My grandpa was a ww2 vet, twice wounded, had a piece of shrapnel near his spine for the rest of his life and he never talked about the war time. just repeated all the time that it was terrible
