Perfect timing! We finally got our rescue pup almost 2 weeks ago now, and I must admit I didn’t expect leash training to be so difficult but in her first 5 1/2months of life she’s rarely been on a leash. So we started putting it on her whilst playing indoors and walking around our garden. We have yet to venture any further as the rescue recommends not walking them for the first 3 weeks as they need to settle, but she’s getting better each day :)
Thankyou Rachel, you are literally a lifesaver! My 4 and a half month old pitbull puppy Zara has learnt some really bad habits because I did not know how to train her well. Nearly everything I've been doing with her from day 1 is wrong. And I've been following so many different trainers and training methods but none of them are working, all that has happened is that me and Zara are totally overwhelmed and confused. Now I've found your videos I've deleted all other dog training videos from my play list and I've gone back to absolute basics using your training methods. AND ITS WORKING!!! Just the last month I've seriously considered giving my puppy up or even having her put down (she's a "restricted breed" in my area, so she would be put down at a shelter) she is uncontrollable on a leash, in company or in public, and worst of all her puppy nipping has become aggressive with me and has drawn blood on myself, and overexcitedly done the same to several guests in my home, and strangers while outside walking. I was beginning to think she really was becoming an aggressive, "dangerous" dog, and also I knew I couldn't control her. I knew too that it was my fault, not hers, because I was inadvertently teaching and rewarding the wrong behaviours. But like I said I've become overwhelmed and confused by so many different training programs and techniques that were not helpful for me. Mainly because these people are not showing real life situations, with untrained dogs, especially the TV show trainers where they only show a snippet of the bad behaviour and the training then a magically perfectly behaved dog and results. This is completely unrealistic. I love how you show your own dogs, and Wally, in real life, although you edit your videos you don't edit out the amount of times and setbacks etc you practice and respond to. The main thing I've learned from your videos so far is that A) I'm expecting way too much from my puppy and B) I'm setting us both up for failures and frustration by doing this, also C) I need to make every day moments and situations count as training and reward sessions and make them FUN FOR ME AND MY PUPPY. So, again, thankyou, Zara and I are going back to basics, following your real life experiences and examples with training, and also I'm going to be throwing out her food and treats, switching her diet to fresh and raw foods and treats. And I've been looking everywhere for a treat bag and a front clipping harness and I will definitely be buying the ones recommended in this video. Just want to say that you're amazing and after trying for weeks and weeks to get my 6 month old puppy to stop pulling in front of me, after two days of using your tips he is already sooo much better at walking by my side. I am so amazed by how easy it is. You also made me realize that I maybe started taking my pup for full walks around the neighborhood with lots of moving cars, other dogs, and people too soon and that was causing him to not be able to focus during walks. So we cut down to just around the yard and on our street and he is getting a whole lot better. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ you have made our walks so much less stressful
Honestly your lessons have helped me so much. I just got a puppy, 8 weeks, and ive been doing the no bowl thing twice a day, and in 1 bowl he learned how to sit, ive had him 4 days and he can sit, laydown, come, look, we are learning heal, hes distance traing well, and being calmer when i put the harness on and he had a vet app and was really good with the vet touching his head ect and gonna be doing touch next week. Potty training though isnt successful yet as its been horrible weather. All because of you and your videos, thank you so much! Xx

My mother’s trying to convince my dad to buy me a 1 and a half year old male pomchi which I met the owner at the park and he’s fostering it since the dog’s previous owners were abusive. The dog’s AMAZING and so perfect and I so hope he doesn’t find a different home because I just can’t imagine getting a different dog. He’s so calm and amazing with kids and other dogs and lovable with strangers and potty trained. He’s so perfect and I hope my dad says yes soon 😔
This video was a good refresher for me. My puppy used to be really well behaved then we got a sibling and didn’t get to work with him as much and since the weather will get nicer soon, we will have some more training sessions to bring the good behavior back!

We have an 11 wk old Frenchie who follows us around without a leash, but the moment we put a harness and leash on him, he sits and stares at us when we call for him. Needless to say, we're starting leash training right away with the tips from this vid. Funny thing is that he's already got his Sit command down during mealtime that he learned from our two cats :)
I adopted my dog from a rescue and she was one year. She’s now two years old and we are trying to learn how to walk on the leash but I need to start in the backyard now and hope that helps .
I make dog treats out of sardines, peanut butter or pumpkin and egg. Puree and bake on parchment. I cut them while still warm. Also, lightly boil chicken liver then cut up and dehydrated makes good treats

I just got an 8 month old pup four days ago. He's a big boy, but sweet as can be. He has the kindest eyes and I just fell in love instantly. He is a rescue and was living in a foster home in an extra calm neighbourhood up until now. However, I live in an apartment in a busy street in the middle of a big city. Boy, oh boy. What a change! He gets very excited when he sees me getting the leash, he truly wants to go outside. But the moment he sets his feet on the sidewalk he's all over the place. Scared, agitated. He then either gets stuck, trembling of fear, or pulls with all his might on the leash towards somewhere. My arms are burning from trying to guide him -- he's *really* strong. But the thing is: we live in an apartment. He HAVE to take him out multiple times a day. And he'll keep on pushing on that leash no matter what. He pulls for many minutes on end, even when I refuse to walk. He cries, he doesn't seem to relate the fact that his puling = me not walking / changing directions. I've been training attention cues at home, and he's actually great at them. He's a very smart boy. But outside there's just too much input all of a sudden. I can't even get him to a calm spot, bc he won't let me. And he's not food/treats-driven AT ALL. He couldn't care less, nothing will get his attention, except for me sometimes, but only for a fraction of a second. I've bought many different sorts of treats too, but his fear is clearly overwhelming... I'm already talking to a trainer bc I don't really know how to proceed on getting him his confidence in such an environment. All videos I see here on YT seem to have perfect conditions of training, which is great but many of us don't have and can't always control.

Watched her before I got my 7 week old puppy, and my puppy (now 8.5 weeks old) knows sit, touch, let go, puppy’s name, down, gentle, and where to potty (most of the time). Positive Reinforcement for the win!!

I watched your introducing a new puppy to your cat video and was wondering what advice you have for where to have the puppy sleep in his crate when we have a cat who must sleep in the bed with my fiancée. Our cat is obsessed with my fiancée and practically sleeps on his head, but in your video you said to not let them interact until days/weeks if necessary. I can put the puppy’s crate in the kitchen where the cat won’t have access to, but I don’t want to make the puppy nervous by not seeing us while we sleep

Yes!! If you watch closely, you’ll see Wally bite at the leash in this video multiple times 🙄😜 Watch how I don’t pay attention and I keep moving forward (ie redirecting), staying exciting and rewarding when he’s NOT biting the leash.
I've found some great training advice, but all of them rely on you having something your puppy really wants (food, treat, toy, etc) that you can direct and redirect their attention to while working with them. What if our puppy isn't interested enough in those things? They'll often quickly lose interest in food and treats while we are training, which makes working with them difficult. For redirection from unwanted behaviors (digging, biting, trying to eat potentially unsafe things like rocks, etc), we have trouble getting them to refocus on us or toys. Any advice?

Why don't you like the harness on the back? I have a puppy miniature schnauzer, and the harness we got has clips on both the front and the back, but because he's so small atm, I feel like the front clip would cause the leash to be in his face. I learned hand feeding from you, and my 8 weeks mini schnauzer Mac now can sit and down very well without using his teeth. I wish I could find this video earlier. I found a harness for him (still too loose, his neck is about 8 inches now) from an independent pet store. The first time leash training ended with chewing and trapping... And he was annoyed by the two D rings on his harness clicked all the time when he's walking. I have two questions here, would appreciate if you can get back to me: Where can I find a good harness for my puppy; Does raw food contain parasites or bacterias that harmful to puppies?

Hey!! So I stared feeding mine two instead of three around 4-5 months. A friend of ours has a very healthy, very happy 7 year old Bernese mountain dog who eats twice a day. Once early-ish in the morning, and once in the evening. Hope this helps!!
I use some of my puppys kibble at meal time for training. Inbetween those times im going thro alot of training treats and worry about her weight gain. Every training video ive watched they constantly reward with treats. What do you suggest with this issue help please.

do you have any advice for if my puppy is stubborn during a walk and just stops all together? he will literally just sit and start to pull backward and i try to use the touch command or wait for him and ignore so I don't reinforce the behavior but it doesn't always work!

Just want to say that you're amazing and after trying for weeks and weeks to get my 6 month old puppy to stop pulling in front of me, after two days of using your tips he is already sooo much better at walking by my side. I am so amazed by how easy it is. You also made me realize that I maybe started taking my pup for full walks around the neighborhood with lots of moving cars, other dogs, and people too soon and that was causing him to not be able to focus during walks. So we cut down to just around the yard and on our street and he is getting a whole lot better. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ you have made our walks so much less stressful

Honestly your lessons have helped me so much. I just got a puppy, 8 weeks, and ive been doing the no bowl thing twice a day, and in 1 bowl he learned how to sit, ive had him 4 days and he can sit, laydown, come, look, we are learning heal, hes distance traing well, and being calmer when i put the harness on and he had a vet app and was really good with the vet touching his head ect and gonna be doing touch next week. Potty training though isnt successful yet as its been horrible weather. All because of you and your videos, thank you so much! Xx

My mother’s trying to convince my dad to buy me a 1 and a half year old male pomchi which I met the owner at the park and he’s fostering it since the dog’s previous owners were abusive. The dog’s AMAZING and so perfect and I so hope he doesn’t find a different home because I just can’t imagine getting a different dog. He’s so calm and amazing with kids and other dogs and lovable with strangers and potty trained. He’s so perfect and I hope my dad says yes soon 😔
This video was a good refresher for me. My puppy used to be really well behaved then we got a sibling and didn’t get to work with him as much and since the weather will get nicer soon, we will have some more training sessions to bring the good behavior back!

Potty training and crate training my puppy with your videos was a BREEZE. We’re a little delayed on leash training due to shots & then having a really bad winter while living in the country… started back up and leash training has been so hard 😅 trying these tips with my yellow lab!

We have an 11 wk old Frenchie who follows us around without a leash, but the moment we put a harness and leash on him, he sits and stares at us when we call for him. Needless to say, we're starting leash training right away with the tips from this vid. Funny thing is that he's already got his Sit command down during mealtime that he learned from our two cats :)

I adopted my dog from a rescue and she was one year. She’s now two years old and we are trying to learn how to walk on the leash but I need to start in the backyard now and hope that helps .

I make dog treats out of sardines, peanut butter or pumpkin and egg. Puree and bake on parchment. I cut them while still warm. Also, lightly boil chicken liver then cut up and dehydrated makes good treats

I just got an 8 month old pup four days ago. He's a big boy, but sweet as can be. He has the kindest eyes and I just fell in love instantly. He is a rescue and was living in a foster home in an extra calm neighbourhood up until now. However, I live in an apartment in a busy street in the middle of a big city. Boy, oh boy. What a change! He gets very excited when he sees me getting the leash, he truly wants to go outside. But the moment he sets his feet on the sidewalk he's all over the place. Scared, agitated. He then either gets stuck, trembling of fear, or pulls with all his might on the leash towards somewhere. My arms are burning from trying to guide him -- he's *really* strong. But the thing is: we live in an apartment. He HAVE to take him out multiple times a day. And he'll keep on pushing on that leash no matter what. He pulls for many minutes on end, even when I refuse to walk. He cries, he doesn't seem to relate the fact that his puling = me not walking / changing directions. I've been training attention cues at home, and he's actually great at them. He's a very smart boy. But outside there's just too much input all of a sudden. I can't even get him to a calm spot, bc he won't let me. And he's not food/treats-driven AT ALL. He couldn't care less, nothing will get his attention, except for me sometimes, but only for a fraction of a second. I've bought many different sorts of treats too, but his fear is clearly overwhelming... I'm already talking to a trainer bc I don't really know how to proceed on getting him his confidence in such an environment. All videos I see here on YT seem to have perfect conditions of training, which is great but many of us don't have and can't always control.

Hey! I watched your introducing a new puppy to your cat video and was wondering what advice you have for where to have the puppy sleep in his crate when we have a cat who must sleep in the bed with my fiancée. Our cat is obsessed with my fiancée and practically sleeps on his head, but in your video you said to not let them interact until days/weeks if necessary. I can put the puppy’s crate in the kitchen where the cat won’t have access to, but I don’t want to make the puppy nervous by not seeing us while we sleep

Yes!! If you watch closely, you’ll see Wally bite at the leash in this video multiple times 🙄😜
Watch how I don’t pay attention and I keep moving forward (ie redirecting), staying exciting and rewarding when he’s NOT biting the leash.

I've found some great training advice, but all of them rely on you having something your puppy really wants (food, treat, toy, etc) that you can direct and redirect their attention to while working with them. What if our puppy isn't interested enough in those things? They'll often quickly lose interest in food and treats while we are training, which makes working with them difficult. For redirection from unwanted behaviors (digging, biting, trying to eat potentially unsafe things like rocks, etc), we have trouble getting them to refocus on us or toys. Any advice?
You should do a video on what you feed your dogs ik you did one a long time ago but maybe a updated one! :)

Why don't you like the harness on the back? I have a puppy miniature schnauzer, and the harness we got has clips on both the front and the back, but because he's so small atm, I feel like the front clip would cause the leash to be in his face. Thoughts?

Hi Rachel, first time dog parent here. Thanks for the videos for new puppies. I learned hand feeding from you, and my 8 weeks mini schnauzer Mac now can sit and down very well without using his teeth. I wish I could find this video earlier. I found a harness for him (still too loose, his neck is about 8 inches now) from an independent pet store. The first time leash training ended with chewing and trapping... And he was annoyed by the two D rings on his harness clicked all the time when he's walking.

Hey!! So I stared feeding mine two instead of three around 4-5 months. A friend of ours has a very healthy, very happy 7 year old Bernese mountain dog who eats twice a day. Once early-ish in the morning, and once in the evening. Hope this helps!!
I use some of my puppys kibble at meal time for training. Inbetween those times im going thro alot of training treats and worry about her weight gain. Every training video ive watched they constantly reward with treats. What do you suggest with this issue help please.
