I just got the BR-XL and torque master expert for my scx10 2 unimog truck.. I haven't used it yet but I hear great things about Holmes hobbies...still building this truck
One of the most technically informative RC enthusiasts out there Josh! Alot of the people listen to you and take you're recommendations seriously. I know I do as you inspired me to get a deadbolt (then a yeti, then a bomber, and now an scx10 2). Enjoying the live builds as well!
FYI, super-low-budget option: Motor: GoolRC 35t - 9 US$ ESC: Hobbywing 1060: 20 US$ Servo: DS3218 20kg : 13US$ Total: 42 US$ I'm running it with no problems at all on my SCX10!
+Žarko Jovanović there are definitely lower cost options than what I suggested, however for performance I would be happy with, that is as low as I'd run.
I gotta agree with you on Futaba Radios. I've used them almost exclusively since 1984! The only exceptions are a couple of Rigs that are cheap bashers. I use a Flysky GT3B. I wouldn't trust it in a remote location, with my Rig a good distance away from me...... BUT, for $35.00, for what I use it for - there is NOTHING within $100 that comes close! When I'm serious, Futaba is my go-to. I'm also with you on 2-speed transmissions. More slop, more things to break, finicky at times..... I'm an old school, brushed motor kind of guy. I THOUGHT I was going to cut a corner or two on the power. But you're a good salesman! Look, I don't have disposable income. Almost everything I buy, hurts our budget in some way. Especially lately, where all of my spare cash is going to my best friend, who's going through a situation that you couldn't imagine in your nightmares. I'm desperately trying to get other people to help, so he and his family don't end up homeless, in Summer, in Arizona. He's a Disabled Air Force Vet..... If he's forced into that, he'll likely die in his condition! SORRY! I really digress. The Castle system for under $150 may be my best option! Thanks. Murph
As far as budget minded crawlers I’d highly recommend the fly sky gt3b that controller with a receiver is only 40 bucks. And the 3ch receivers are only 10-12 bucks and it has a programmability for up to 10 trucks. And if you do smash it on a rock it’s super super cheap to replace. And I feel it’s a very overlooked combo in the market.
Just looking to see and it appears I don’t see any banning them in the last year or so but not sure what current stance on them has been in racing especially. Even at crawling events we’ve seen glitching issues and causing cross issues with Spektrum users.
Harley Designs I did some digging around some forums about this. It appears only spectrum is affected by the flysky which leads me to believe it isn’t a flysky issue but maybe a lack of frequency hoping in the spektrum? I could be wrong. But that’s seems to be a few folks opinions on the inter webs. But it seems to only cause problems when the spektrum is introduced into the mix.
You did a great job covering variety of options and info ! Nice job! I'm currently testing a oilite bushing that I milled out... I could make one for the Vanquish HD AR60 for you to try out if you're interested.. I've got a full machine shop at my fingertips now 🍻
+BarharborBasher thanks but I think I'll be selling my XL this weekend. I just don't see it as a car I'm interested in right now. I'm kind of wondering how long it will stay in the axial line up myself. It was a really cool concept...
Harley Designs I'm hoping it does🙏 the Bomber XL conversion makes it a beast... I won a sensor Castle Creations motor on Instagram yesterday🍻 I wonder what it will be like with a two speed? oho and I was referring to the stockpile of Yeti XL Vanquish axles that you guys are sitting on...
I notice Josh you appear to have switched to Holmes Hobbies from the Tekin ROC 412 as your weapon of choice. Would you now use Holmes Hobbies for preference in your Bomber platform too, I mean if you where starting again.
Really enjoying this series. Nice to see some non Bomber (platform of choice!) / Wraith action. The only thing that stops me upgrading my VP tricked SCX10 to the new SCX10 II is the lack of VP axles. You where running them at Axle Fest right, hows the progress with them?
Awesome, thank you Josh. Just in time for the holiday season. Here's hoping you make enough to meet demand (and I can get a set over to the UK this side of 2017). Right I'll get a kit a start building.
Hey Josh, if you prefer sensored brushless over two speed (totally understand that, had a dig on my Wraith and it was the point that always failed), how come you've kept the bulky SCX 10 2 transmission case, rather than going for the option of the original SCX 10 transmission that comes with the kit?
+Tom Kirby-Green I really like the style of the trans. The scale transfer case style and the potential of the cool looks when it WILL get turned around in the future.
+ghost5533 the turn you chose and in what fashion you prefer the windings is up to you and your budget. If I was personally going to run brushed I would do Crawlmaster Pro 13t (5 slot armature with a comparable resistance to a standard 27t). A 5 slot is much smoother than a traditional 3 slot.
Harley Designs - I didn't realize that option was even available! My other Hobby is Model Railroading, and I've been in it since 1976. One of the first things we learned, was that the early 3-pole motors were absolute CRAP for smooth low speed control. 5 and 7-pole motors were the choice setup! Even though Model Trains use 1/100th of the amperage of R/C motors, the theory is the same. THANK YOU! My first choice is going to be finding a decent 5-pole motor... hopefully in this old Veteran's tiny budget.
great info as usual josh. i like how you made combo suggestions for most budgets. you can't go wrong with holmes hobbies. i've got a 3300kv trailmaster in my wraith and i love it. im using a 27t torquemaster pro in my scx10 II. i cani't wait to see how it performs. what are you doing with your rx antenna since the rx box does not have a tube attachment?
Harley Designs thanks, i guess i should have looked around a bit b4 buying the r304sb. oh well, maybe i'll just keep it in the drawer for my exo rebuild. oops, should i have not mentioned the exo?
Hey Harley I love your videos. Had a quick question. I am new to RC and I plan on buying the boom racing D90 1/10th scale RC chassis and hard body. I will be running heavy rims, heavy body, lots of accessories to make it look super scale. I am willing to spend money as I want this rig to be top of the line, also it will be crawling specific but a little speed would be good. So could you recommend a servo, motor, esc, radio, and reciever that would all work good together? You do have a nice list set up here but being new to all this is tricky to decide. I also want a setup that just works without having to fine tune everything, simple but high quality.
If you’re looking for high quality, I may suggest looking at another option rather than Boom Racing. They are not a high quality manufacturer. Beyond that you will also want to be very careful about adding much power to a truck like that as those axles are very weak due to their size. I’d hate to give you a recommendation on all the things you ask for based on the truck you’re describing because I think you’ll end up with a lot of issues.
Harley Designs so would you suggest that I get a scx10 2? That was the other truck I was looking at. I couldn't find munch info on the boom racing chassis so good thing I asked you haha. Or what would you suggest I get if I want a good crawler that I can add scale features to?
The SCX10-2 is a solid base to turn into almost anything you want. It's still currently my favorite platform to work with. It's also going to be more durable or have options to make a weak point more durable. In the end you can still put different bodies or accessories on the chassis as well and at that point you should get the desired look you're after.
+David B.Leblanc when using 2 servos in the past, I have used the Castle BEC Pro which was 20 amps. I think it would be a safe bet to do that for your application. The Vanquish lights don't apply because they wore direct to the 3s lipo and don't run through your RX.

One more budget option is the hobby wing 1080 , 3s waterproof, 42.00 dollars
Sincerely one of the best if not the best channel out there . Awesome info
The Futaba 4PV looks to be replacing the 4PLS. It's a great alternative with some good 4PX features at a much lower price.
+The RCNetwork I do need to get one of those coming soon.
can't wait for you to do bumpers as I am having a problem with my rear bumber on the scx10 2.

They do have issues at larger events however, some of the large RC events have banned them for interference issues in the past even.
Harley Designs oh that’s good to know. Most rigs I’ve been out with is 40 and didn’t have any problems. I’ll keep that in mind I didn’t know that.
Just looking to see and it appears I don’t see any banning them in the last year or so but not sure what current stance on them has been in racing especially. Even at crawling events we’ve seen glitching issues and causing cross issues with Spektrum users.

Another disadvantage of a 2 speed Is the extra play it adds in the drive train. Which is Significant.
2 years it's been two years...crazy

ya I think the 2 gear is just asking for striped gears & with a brushless seansored setup its going to be more than fast enough.
Love all these vids, keep it up man!
U should get a castle brushless sensored motor also to try out for crawling
+ATOMIK SLOTH I'll definitely be doing that in the future.
thanks
So is the steering servo water proof?
I have the Mamba Monster X will it serve well for the 3500kv brushless motor?
Nice vid!!!😀
I notice Josh you appear to have switched to Holmes Hobbies from the Tekin ROC 412 as your weapon of choice. Would you now use Holmes Hobbies for preference in your Bomber platform too, I mean if you where starting again.
+Tom Kirby-Green I like to run different setups all the time. I love my RX8 and Pro4HD in the Bomber.
Really enjoying this series. Nice to see some non Bomber (platform of choice!) / Wraith action. The only thing that stops me upgrading my VP tricked SCX10 to the new SCX10 II is the lack of VP axles. You where running them at Axle Fest right, hows the progress with them?
They should be hitting the site in the next 3 weeks or so.
Awesome, thank you Josh. Just in time for the holiday season. Here's hoping you make enough to meet demand (and I can get a set over to the UK this side of 2017). Right I'll get a kit a start building.
Nice

This! That trans looks dumb as hell and not even oriented correctly. Totally asinine and gimmicky!
Can you give your thoughts as to why you chose the Tekin 35T HD over the 30T Pro?
+ghost5533 the turn you chose and in what fashion you prefer the windings is up to you and your budget. If I was personally going to run brushed I would do Crawlmaster Pro 13t (5 slot armature with a comparable resistance to a standard 27t). A 5 slot is much smoother than a traditional 3 slot.
Good points. I never looked into the amount of armatures in the motors. Definitely making me lean toward Holmes over the Tekin combo.
+ghost5533 Both have some great options. I really like the 5 slot motors personally, they are very smooth.
Harley Designs - I didn't realize that option was even available! My other Hobby is Model Railroading, and I've been in it since 1976.

+humble rc the 2106GF only has an antenna that's about 3/4" long. So it doesn't leave the RX box.
Harley Designs thanks, i guess i should have looked around a bit b4 buying the r304sb. oh well, maybe i'll just keep it in the drawer for my exo rebuild. oops, should i have not mentioned the exo?

I would like to know if I need 1 or more BEC for 2 servos futaba S9177sv, a winch and a Vanquish pods light

Harley Designs thank you
Are you done with the bomber budget build? I thought you had a couple upgrades left?
I have one video left, but just haven't got around to putting the final pieces together for it.
The scx 10 ii is mg in the Trans ?
+Ionut Costache-Bobescu the kit version has metal gears. The RTR has the old 3 gear trans and is plastic geared.
but in motors with brushed brushes brushed brushes do brushes wear out? That is, if the charcoal is consumed the engine is to be thrown away? 🙄
