Quick Tip: .300 Blackout vs 7.62x39

  • Brownells Firearm Support Technician Caleb Savant compares the 7.62x39mm and .300 AAC Blackout (aka 300 BLK) rifle cartridges. Both rounds are similar in size, and when loaded with similar-weight bullets, their ballistic performance is almost identical. So what's the difference? The Russian 7.62x39 operates very reliably in the AK-47 platform, which was designed around it. Later, attempts were made to chamber an AR-15 in 7.62x39 to get a .30 caliber AR in a compact package, but the taper of the 7.62x39 case doesn't mesh well with the AR-15's straight magazine well. A reliable 7.62x39 AR-15 CAN be built, with fairly extensive modifications to the rifle. The .300 Blackout round uses a necked-up 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington case, so a standard AR-15 can be converted to it simply by changing the barrel! Both cartridges also work well in bolt action rifles, so they make excellent short-range hunting rounds, too.

      I think Brownells forgot to fact check the "7.62x29" cartridge. And this video contributes nothing to the discussion. He didn't even mention the fact that Blackout has suppression advantages. That's probably it's strongest advantage platform aside.

    I believe 300 blackout is just the SAAMI designation of the 300 whisper cartridge by J.D. Jones and was primarily designed as a sub-sonic loading for break-action and bolt action rifles. then some company decided to go get it SAAMI spec'd so they could start chambering their guns in it.

    I built a few ARs and all the ones that shoot 7.62 I have seen have the same issue with primer strikes on steel ammo, this can be mitigated by an enhanced firing pin or a stronger hammer spring but that’s my .2

      @Dan-gg8fk 5 месяцев назад +1

      Correct. When I built my AR I used an enhanced firing pin and the Hiperfire trigger group with the 7.62X39 spring set and Duramags. There is no such thing as a light primer strike. After 2000 rounds everything is still running smooth.

    It seams as if the reliable feeding issues on the AR platform of the 7.62x39 round have been for the most part worked out. (better magazines and enhanced firing pin profiles)
    As far as availability and cost the 7.62x39 wins hands down.
    My last build was a 7.62x39 side charging AR based on ammo availability and cost alone.

    Wrong, the 7.62x39 was NOT designed around the AK platform. The first gun it was chambered in was the RPD followed by the SKS. What made me laugh was the true fudd line "You should keep these cartridges in the right platforms they were designed for" then goes and says you can get a bolt gun chambered in them. Smh. Why not really compare the two and say that 7.62×39 actually has a much higher velocity than 300 blackout, Just not as many options for reloading? Go to Iraqveteran8888 for a real comparison.

      The 7.62x39 bullet diameter is just slightly too large, the cartridge body is too large, and the case head is too large. If you even manage to fit it in a .300 blackout gun, you’re likely to blow it up due to the bolt being unable to fully close or the barrel becoming obstructed by the too-large bullet.

  • @jfox1078
    @jfox1078 2 года назад

    The 7.62 x 39 should be compared to the 300 Ham’r. 7.62 x 39 isn’t sub-sonic, so 300 blackout should be in the sub machine gun, SBR , QCB class.
