  • From its beginning in 1977, the Vancouver SkyTrain, SeaBus and West Coast Express network has grown to over 59 stations, spanning 152 kilometres (94 miles). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the TransLink network that we know today.

The SkyTrain is a dream to ride. When it first entered service, it was the world’s first light rail system to be fully automated. Most people weren’t used to the concept of automation and thought the train was controlled by magic

Kobe port liner opened first. Lille metro was second. Vancouver was third or fourth, but one of the first to use linear induction motors (IDK if Ōeido line was built earlier b/c they’re around the same age)

Well, even if it's true what you say, there is however some things that have to be kept in mind, and it is the Montreal subway network. Due to mainly safety issues, there is a ''driver'' in the trains(it is not safety reason, it is union issues that forces the Montreal subway to have an operator), but it is fully automated since 1966, meaning it could be operated without the operator, it's simply not for the reason I just point at.
In the end you are right about who's the first, but only due to another union scam in the national state of quebec.

You shouldn't use the term LRT for systems like Vancouver. It kinda undersells it. Light metro might work as a term. But because it's grade separated its entire route, I'd just call it metro.

I think Light Metro is fair since the rolling stock is smaller than normal heavy rail metro and fits less people.

I guess people haven't changed their minds. The Montreal REM, which is very similar to the SkyTrain, just opened and it's being referred to as light rail. 😆
I'm gonna exploit that though. I'm in New York, and the proposed Interborough Express is supposed to be "light rail". Hoping it's *this* kind of "light rail". 🤞🏻

You didn't mention the greenlit Langley Expo Line extension, which Kevin Desmond busted ass to get to phase-one construction. Then coronavirus hit. Looking at the REM, the Ontario Line, and many other automated metros planned world-wide, I think it's safe to say that the Skytrain is a system built at least 30 years ahead of its time. Automated Metro is a transit system that pays for itself, because you only need to hire a fraction of the work force at the same time as you get unbeatable speed and reliablility, allowing small cities to build full world class metro systems within their opperating budget. Areas within a 5-10 minute walk of a Skytrain station see on average $5 billion of investment, so I think it's safe to say that we're making our money back by building them. I forsee another 150km of Skytrain built within the next 50 years if we are actually serious about fighting congestion, wealth inequality, greenhouse gasses, and economic stagnation - Skytrain helps to solve those problems.

It’s kinda weird to begin the history of Vancouver’s transit system at the year 1977. The year Vancouver’s transit system began is more like1890 .. with *The B,C. Electric Railway* ... which includes the entire electrified bus system which runs on all the old streetcars routes and the old Interurban R.O.W.’s which a significant part of the 1980’s EXPO line runs along. Otherwise, a well narrated video synopsis of the late 20th C to early 21 C portion of the very long history of the BC Transit* system.
