My husband and I both worked at the airport in St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and we had the same scene as at Gander. Only as being a bigger city, we had the professionals needed to accomodate all peoples, requests, etc. Gander didn't but with the help of surrounding communities, pulled off an amazing feat. The airport in St. John's was in the middle of renovations and my husband and I did not see each other for 6 full days, account our shifts and working around the clock. I came home one day and my husband (a very funny man) had left me a note "Hey I'm the guy who shares your bed...do you think we can get together for a coffee". The laugh was very much needed.
Same! It brings me to tears when they are naming places people were when finding out about 911… i was literally in history class in 8th grade…. Then had to be shuffled to cafeteria and we all had to put our heads down with lights off (because they didnt know if terrorists would attack schools). We watched a single TV wheeled in from the school library and just stared i. Confusion and disbelief as our teachers were openly weeping.
Like, the women who play Beulah and Hannah are able to essentially make themselves cry on command - but good lord it still feels so painful and so real.
Same. Every time. I can’t listen to the soundtrack. I’m seeing the musical for the fourth time this fall. I’m a masochist. Mostly I cry because people are just not this good. I wish the world could learn from this.
Having worked at a US airline's flight dispatch center the morning of 9/11. I always wondered how you could write a play about that horrible day. I saw the play here in Memphis when the US tour restarted. I was blown away. My wife, our 13 year old daughter (who loves theater), we were speechless on the way home. Powerful, amazing, incredible. I didn't think I was cutting any onions....
Being from Newfoundland, what these lovely people have done sharing our story is marvellous... Being considerate towards someone can go a long way in helping them push past their troubles. Thank you.
Thanking people for telling the story about an incredible, beautiful act of kindness, brotherhood, and humanity that your home territory did for so many people, might be the most Canadian thing I've ever heard. Thank YOU and your whole country. My pastor when I was a child was one of the "come from aways" and he spent the rest of his life talking about his experience. (He wasn't in Gander, he was in Hair Bay?) He said nothing proved his faith in God like the way those people treated all of them. He said there's a line in the Lord's Prayer that says, "On Earth as it is in Heaven." And in our country's darkest hour, God made that line true. I can't think of a more beautiful tribute to a people or place than that
come from away is the best broadway show of this decade and somehow it’s also the most underrated show???? so so glad to see it getting recognized as the masterpiece it is
Big fan of their choice not to sing their opening number, especially because it's such an easy way to establish the concept of the show (and that's the one they always perform). Because while Welcome to the Rock is brilliant everytime it's performed, it's interesting to see them establish their show with a variety of ways. They did a really good job of picking their set list here.
This was truly such a treat to see Julie Reiber as Captain Beverly Bass! Her vocals and expressions are incredible - I think this is the first performance of “Me and the Sky” I’ve seen that rivals Jen Colella’s!
When she says "He's gone" and then starts singing I cry every single time... Every time I listened to the soundtrack, when I was lucky enough to see the show and again when I just watched this. What a beautiful show.
A Broadway Production behind a Tiny Desk??????????way to live up to your name Tiny Desk Concerts!!! to anyone else reading this - I love you and wish you happiness.
@Renato Costa , @Nicholas Morgan & @ackerman666, thanks a ton! fantastic suggestions! I'm no expert in music so this is finger-clickingly blowing my mind!
Thank all of you for expressing the human kindness thousands of people found in Gander and the surrounding communities. I am a Newfoundlander. There is never a bad time, to do a good deed. Say hello to a stranger. It might become your new friend.
I absolutely love this musical, it never fails to reduce me to tears. It's such a powerful piece of theatre to watch. Astrid Van Wieren (the white haired woman who plays Beulah and others) is just perfect in this, her fighting back tears for most of the performances and then her emotional reaction to "Hannah's" (sorry I don't know the Actress portraying her name) singing, just melts my heart everytime.
As a proud Canadian, I heard this story earlier than most Americans. The people of Newfoundland showed the world how to respond to hate in times of distress. They opened their hearts to those who were scared, confused and lost and welcomed them not only into their community's but, also into their families. I am so thankful that this story has been immortalized by the Broadway industry, and I hope all who see this production will take away the lesson that Gander gave to the world during those dark days.
I wasn't looking for a musical, but this immediately brought me back to working at a call center in Oregon and not knowing why we weren't getting lit up by calls from the East Coast for the first 3 hours of business, only to be told about that something significant was happening in New York, and then seeing the footage of the first plane hitting one of the towers, and then the live footage of the second strike and fall of the Twins. I cried then, and this made me tear up unexpectedly...hard to believe we're almost 20 years away from that horrible day.
My husband is a flight attendant and was bound for NYC the morning of September 11th. I still get tearful when I think of the lives lost and a world forever changed by this horrific event and hateful ideology. Thank you for sharing this awesome project and production.
We saw the production in Cincinnati. It's hard to put into words, but being in the theater for Come From Away, was the closest I've been to 9/11/01 since that morning in my dorm room watching the live coverage. This show brought back all those emotions associated with life lost, irrational paranoia, and community building in the after-math of the tragedy. Tissues (many of them) were required. Thank you for this cast and crew, and their performance. -Jeff & Kristen
I want to see this so badly. Interestingly, I've actually seen it descibed as more of a 9/12 show, since it's more about dealing with the aftermath of it, rather than 9/11 itself.
I saw this in Cincinnati too. It still gives me chills and those raw emotions come flooding back. This is a perfect example of how September 12th was. We weren't Republican or Democrat, Back or White, Catholic, Jews, Baptist or anything else we were all family. I remember going to a candle light vigil and people you never met before just crying and hugging. I don't want another September 11th but I do want another September 12th.
I saw this in Cincinnati too! It brought so many emotions back. As a Firefighter when Hanna called Beulah at the end I lost it. To me the atmosphere in the theater changed. So powerful.
I miss live theatre so much. I've listened to the soundtrack through a few times, but seeing it performed unleashed the tears all over again. The person performing Captain Bass here does Jenn Colella proud.
During 9/11, my mom had to switch my sisters from Gander Academy to a different school because they moved. My mom didn't realize that the school was being used as a shelter and walked right in, was mistaken for a volunteer, and came face to face with an impressively tall guy who didn't speak a lick of english. A few years later she had to register me for school at gander academy and she said she was too embarassed to go in the building in case they recognized her as the lady who just walked right into the school with her children 😂
i’m so amazed that pretty much all of the orignal cast is still with this story, with this show, four and a half years later. it’s honestly so beautiful. i’m so proud that this show is coming back to my city, san diego, next year. it made its world premiere at the la jolla playhouse here in san diego back in 2015, and i’m so honored to have it back. truly one of the best musicals i’ve ever listened to and i’m so excited to see it.
The show, the story, just remarkable. The emotion the performers exhibit, even here, is remarkable. More remarkable is that they only have 12 actors but they each play 2-3 roles and switch between accents like nothing. These people (and Jenn Colella who was not part of this recording) deserve every accolade they receive, as do the creators and the director. I was able to see the show, with Jenn Colella as the female lead (the solo for Me and the Sky) on Broadway in New York and felt it was worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY I spent to get there and get in the theater.
Back in the stone ages when you could get Tiny Desk as an audio podcast, this concert made me cry in a laundromat by the second song. It's taken until now for me to get to see the film of the show.
I'm not into theater, but wow, that was powerful. Such a moving story. I had never heard of those planes, interesting to take inspiration from actual interviews. I was brought to tears. Great job, God bless you.
I've only experienced this musical in the cast recording. Every single time I hear it, I'm overcome with emotion. The first time I ever flew was Sept 21, 2001 and I remember just how somber it was. Thank you for telling this story. It's important and it matters.
My musical theatre school did "me and the sky" as part of our production. None of the girls who sang or did the choreography were born on 9/11, most of us weren't, but every rehearsal and show there'd be like, five of us who would sneak into the wings and listen... we all cried. At least once, and for sissies like me, I cried every time. Not many of us know how it feels to lose someone. But we all know how it felt to have something we loved taken from us. That's why this musical is so affecting - even if you're 15, and you live on the other side of the world.
I saw this musical live in Toronto, and it was by far the most moving and emotional thing I have ever seen. The actors commanded the audience's attention and emotions masterfully
This show does not serve the ego, it serves the human collective. It's message its so important and much needed. Every single person is super talented. I am flawed and so humbled by this show as well as this amazing performance 💖
Oh shoot I'm in a zoom call for school and I'm watching this (without my teachers knowledge) and now I'm crying uncontrollably. I love this musical so much!
I remember watching this on Standing Room after a whole day of walking around the city, and it was the best 1 hour and 40 minutes of my life. I didn't feel the pain in my feet because I was too busy crying and enjoying the show. I'd watch this again (even standing!) in a heartbeat
Saw this show a year ago. One of the most amazing performances put on stage with the bare minimum props. Everyone playing over two characters. Absolutely amazing, go see it now.
A fantastic combination of story and music driven by emotion and reflection. A roller coaster of emotions intertwined with a fantastically passionate performance. Thanks NPR and thanks Come From Away !
Just saw this in London today, one of the greatest experiences of my life. Just fantastic and possibly the biggest outpouring of joy and applause I've seen on stage
I just try to imagine Captain Bass in the audience seeing the show for the first time. She had no idea she was a character. Much less that the character would sing a song about her life's story. She said she just cried the whole time the first seven times she saw it.
Thank you, you have no idea how much I love listening to this musical. I'm from Mexico City, so I was unable to see it on stage, but I knew about it and watched it on Apple TV. Your voices are amazing and the music is fantastic. No matter how many times I listen, I always feel sad, happy, proud, of all the people that came together and showed that love and fraternity can shine through an act motivated by hate.
I just saw this musical in Gander itself tonight. It has been a Newfoundland bucket list of mine to see this play and I was blown. The story telling style is such so beautiful.

What an amazing production and I cannot wait to see it in a few weeks as Come From Away tours Houston, Texas!
I saw this musical live on Broadway about seven years ago--we had front row seats. I can't emphasize how incredible this show is to see live. I was lucky enough to see it with (mostly) the original cast, but I'm not surprised to hear that this cast sounds just as lovely :)
I’ve been listening to the score for over a year so I was prepared for that part of the story. What I wasn’t prepared for was the absolute silence in the theater when that scene took place.
I actually prefer Rachel Tucker’s version to Jen’s (maybe because she was my first Captain) but Julie is amazing
I agree although Jenn will always be my favorite.
Tiny desk really works for this musical, the sense of a small area with a giant group of people in it, making it work
The emotion in the singing of "Me and the Sky" is deep. Julie and Jenn both do great jobs with that.
When she says "He's gone" and then starts singing I cry every single time... Every time I listened to the soundtrack, when I was lucky enough to see the show and again when I just watched this. What a beautiful show.

I love that you guys are having shows come through now. It's so good.
Oh!! Hannah's part about her son always makes me cry!!
Here I am and I see a tiny desk that looks interesting. Now I have to see this show at some point in my life.
If you haven't I highly suggest listening to the soundtrack. It's super good.
And here I am watching this again after the announcement they are recording the stage performance!
I love this musical so much, so beautiful and meaningful.
I saw this musical live on Broadway about seven years ago--we had front row seats. I can't emphasize how incredible this show is to see live. I was lucky enough to see it with (mostly) the original cast, but I'm not surprised to hear that this cast sounds just as lovely :)
I got to see this last night in Seattle for the first time after seeing it on RUclips for years. It was magical.

You know a musical is really good when it works so well even in the Tiny Desk format

This is epically beautiful and so sad.
The actual show isn’t just sad, they just used a few songs here

This is why America is great. It's from the heart and with talent.
Can't wait to see this musical when it comes back to my city. Gonna bring a whole box of tissues.
Just saw this musical in Toronto because of this video, had a great time and I'm crying again! Thank you for having this Tiny Desk!
LOVING IT!
God I love this musical so much.
This is a bittersweet play but it just makes me proud to be Canadian. Also, my dad went to school with one of the writers
I saw it in London a week ago and I can't stop listening to the soundtrack.
I Am Here makes me cry every time i listen to it. Oh boy.
I saw Come From Away on the West End. It blew me away.
Seeing this Saturday in Boston. I haven’t been moved by a score like this in a while.
John M I saw yesterday’s matinee. Wasn’t it amazing?????
Liz Ellingwood it was so good. Lived up to all expectations. What made my heart sink was when the anxious mother finds out that her son died.
I’ve been listening to the score for over a year so I was prepared for that part of the story. What I wasn’t prepared for was the absolute silence in the theater when that scene took place.
Liz Ellingwood same.
This is one of my favorite musicals. I never could have imagined this coming to the Tiny Desk Concert
Absolutely awesome... A brilliantly crafted script that evolved into truly heartfelt songs and a stellar cast. It just doesn't get better than this.
Top contender for my favorite musical. Glad to see them on here.
