  • Down a small lane in East Baltimore you can find historic Bohemian National Cemetery, established in 1884. Join us to today to learn about the Czech Baltimoreans that created it and those that maintain it today. You may have heard of some of the people laid to rest here, including Maelcum Soul, who John Waters called his first star. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another video!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and RUclips channel.

I used to visit the cemeteries every day, it was called "work." Then I began researching all of the historic cemeteries around town. Cemeteries are full of untold stories and forgotten past, but the best tales are in the ones that disappeared and are forgotten.

As a long time member and past gymnast of Sokol Baltimore I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Great to see recognition of this place. Being of Czech descent, many of my ancestors are buried there. Sokol Baltimore routinely held Memorial Day events there as well. Great job, Johns.

We still participate in Memorial Day events there, and hold classes every week for children and adults. Our archives and library at Sokol has a large collection of immigrant and Sokol history.

Many of the city's historic burial grounds were removed and became the corporate cemeteries of today. There are MANY unknown locations of former burial grounds and untold stories of those who were buried there.

I drove past this area for more than 20 years without a clue such an interesting cemetery was just around a corner. All I ever saw was manufacturing buildings - Goetz's candy first comes to mind. Thanks for another great piece of Baltimore history.
