Professional Editions Jazz Ensemble - Grade 5
Written for and recorded by Mario Bauza, Michael Philip Mossman adds his own unique flare to this Dizzy Gillespie Latin jazz classic. Featured soloists include trumpet (of course), as well as trombone and alto. A great showcase for the entire ensemble!

That ensemble break before the solo section is so clean.
What a Bari sax man, holy smokes
I play Bari and can confirm this guy lays it down.
Bass bone player here, zad 😢
That bari sax tho
My favorite arrangement of this classic!!! Been bumpin’ this since I was in middle school.
We were supposed to play this for the swing dance my senior year but covid canceled the entire last semester. Kinda makes me sad listening to it now but maybe one day I'll get the chance to play it again.
I know it’s sad :( but you will get a chance to play it again don’t even worry!!
Why instrument did you play, also so sorry to hear.
@@TrashCanBoiBoi lead alto, which had some really fun parts
This is my favorite arrangement of this song...
Me too 😊
the saxes and trumpets scores are insane
And trombone
@@TheOneAndOnlyJesusChrist
trombone part goes crazy
I’m a 4th trumpet to this in my jazz band, and it’s amazing
Surprisingly I’m a baritone and I got a solo in this song
It feels like a tribute to Gillespie with a night in Tunisia, Manteca, and well you needn't for monk
I'm in 2nd grade and I play every instrument in the world and this is just too easy
2nd grade?
its a joke xD
MicroBacon I...I don't get it
MicroBacon yea right
See I get the joke because your making fun of middleschoolers and high school freshman/sophomores talking about how they can play this
Everyone has different abilities and develops at their own pace.
Be humble fellow musicians.
idk what u talking about as a freshman our jazz band is playing with many top college bands and also having many professors give lectures and also we have many star players who come in and play
ha the little Manteca phrases
Miller Sax King dum bum ba dum
BA BA-DUM BA BA
Love the Con Alma quotes in the Trombone backgrounds. Classic Mossman!
I was in highschool jazz bank in the late 70's in So Cal. We spent hours after school and weekends as a band practicing for competitions.
Love the song, the high school i will be going to played this, and i LOVED IT
what high school?

Superb... really love this ‘salsa’ arrange... seems to ear Fania all a stars or some kind of 👍
Thanks, BD. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy cheeky 16th note runs and weird rhythms
That trumpet solo 🥹😍
Any poor saps who played this song, got stuck with trombone 1 or 2 and could barely play the high notes give this a like.
Pishposh trombone screamer life.. Gotta train that embouchure tighten up that aperture...
If you're playing a grade level 5 song and playing 1st or 2nd trombone you should at least be able to play a double c
@@michaelzepeda3578 For a freshmen, absolutely. I was one of the best in the state as a freshmen towards the end of the year I could only hit the high c, so you seem to be doing really well. Also I'm a sophomore so I'm probably not the best person to take advice from.
I play bass trombone in jazz but 2nd in my concert band so I can kinda relate 😅
I'm not ready man.
Amazing job!!!!! Very clever arrangement!!!!
This chart gives me a craving for some chips and salsa every time I play it and idk why
Haha, this comment now makes wanna get up and get some chips and salsa. 😂
In this score I can easily play the RUclips play button 😅
i heard another band play this today and it went so hard i had to come find it
Kinda funny how the score doesn't exactly line up to the recording, took me a few times to notice lol
I was definitely confused. Must be an old recording or they didn't play the right version
It’s the same arrangement, but a lot of bands like to alter the parts just slightly if they think it would be better. If you notice, it’s really only towards the end where the slight alterations come in, so these are definitely the original parts.
My band is playing what sounds like the recording version of this tune, the arrangement is printed in a different font style and is slightly different in some parts. There must be two different publishers or something and one got a different iteration of the arrangement.
Bass part, for instance.
I think most bands play the altered version, I've heard Joe Grandsen's big band play this arrangement and followed the recording not the score
I've been looking for this for years!! Thank you!!! 😊👍🏾
Is it just me or does 1:11sound like Manteca?
wow first time I've seen a 3rd trumpet solo
muito lindo!!!
i saw the ball state university jazz band play this last night live. it was so amazing.
Wow, I would not have sight red this...
Was not expecting that double G for first trumpet at the end
I was thinking I could play that part no problem but then that double G happened. I can't play that unless you count it sounding thin as paper and killing my chops if I hit it at all.
The moon is the same moon above you
Aglow with its cool evening light
But shining at night, in Tunisia
Never does it shine so bright
The stars are aglow in the heavens
But only the wise understand
That shining at night in Tunisia
They guide you through the desert sand
Words fail, to tell a tale
Too exotic to be told
Each night's a deeper night
In a world, ages old
The cares of the day seem to vanish
The ending of day brings release
Each wonderful night in Tunisia
Where the nights are filled with peace
(bridge)
(scat)
We are playing this in my band. I play bari
How does Hal Leonard do their recordings? Are there Hal Leonard ensembles or something like that?
Scott McLain I think the arranger has his own jazz ensemble or they just hire one 🤷🏽♂️
They work with a professional ensemble
Fyi this is a professional recording.
never seen 4th trumpet get a solo
PoopFaceBomb it used to be 4th part got the solo which is why you see classic jazz bands like the vanguard band solo 4th trombone and trumpet but composers began realizing that solos went better when next to the rhythm section so their was a shift towards 2nd
PoopFaceBomb it matches with low voices
Check out "Aura" by Bill Holman it has a 4th trumpet solo
4th as in split lead
A lot of Ellington stuff has fourth trumpet solos. I guess it's the idea that the fourth player has the most chops left
Me: *takes the Africa map test*
Me: *listening to this*

I’m playing this song in jazz band as the first trombone part it’s kinda fun but really hard too
Very reminiscent of Bob Mintzer's arrangement of Manteca from the 90's. This is a very good companion piece to go with it. Love the calls to other songs too.
Excelent! Very dancing.
Great arrangement !
Go trumpets!
manteca quote? rad
What a trooper 😅
I'm in middle school I played this on flute. It's easy I don't need the sheet music.
Not funny didn’t laugh
@@pythonkick1184 that i did laugh at
so nice, Thanks
4th Trumpet players, rejoice!
Great job!
I remember you had a video of this same piece, but for smaller bands ( I remember 2 trumpets)
Was it deleted?
As A Professional Jazz Bassist I Aprove! A Bit Realaxed For Me Though...
buenisimo
God help me I have to play the lead trumpet on this tomorrow
Same bro. I’m a sophomore in high school and my lips are dead after the first 2 lines
I am currently a sperm cell and I can play all instruments proficiently and this is just too easy. I can play all the parts by myself at once.
I'm only here because I like big band, and I'm thinking of writing big band stuff.
I can’t really hear the bass bone part but I still really like the song
Rip trumpet 1 at the end
No one taking about the insane saxes at 2:06
Trombone solo at 2:17
sonic 3 act 2, pain valley
You can hear "Well you needn't"
how is this only a grade 5?
Tab Biggs what do you want? grade 13?
5 is already the top grade, every thing beyond 4th standard is 5
Hiroko Kaku there’s also grade 6, which is not common to see
At 0.75x speed it sounds pretty chill
Hello,
I am a Jazz scholar. How can I get the score for an analysis? (also for a fee).
Carlo from Italy
yea boie
Didn't Maynard Ferguson play this?
I believe so. It definatly sounds like his kind of song
Dizzy Gillespie made this famous.. (along with Arturo Sandoval).
Actually, you should listen to the Maynard Ferguson and the Big Bop Noveau band and Bud Shank Quartet playing Night in Tunisia; Maynard's arrangement.
Pretty sure this is a version with Maynard playing
Nah. You'd be able to tell if it were Maynard playing.
A night in Tunisia? More like a night in Cuba!
Any book on how to learn to arrange this well?
Big little band but very hard
1:10
I'm doing that in six flags
What drum beat is being played?
Mambo. Could be salsa.
wot
The groove is too muddled. The percussion needs to be more sparsely constructed, otherwise it just sounds like a stream of 16th notes.
Bebopper composes a mambo. Sounds like a stream of 16th notes. Uhh .... yeah.
