I have both in the upscale versions...grey Grip with G10, Black 20CV sheepsfoot blade, w/Spydie hole...Bugout grey blade with drab green scales...I played along with the vid...and BOTH knives are GREAT! Totally different use..so I recommend that everyone own BOTH! 👶

I’ve had a Griptilian for about 10 years and rarely carried it. Thought it was bulky and cheap feeling. About a month or so ago I stumbled across the Applied Weapons Technology scales. Bought them for the Griptilian and now it’s my favorite knife. So much so I ordered another Grip and set of AWT scales.

I’d like to get a Bugout in M4 that would be sweet. That exact base model Griptilian 551 is what finds its way into my pocket I’d say most of the time. It’s not fancy or rare, but it is special. Special in a sense that it’s just one of the best work knives ever made. It’s really a fantastic knife for just a general work knife.

I gave away my large Griptilian, loved the knife but hated to carry it, I couldn't handle the handle...way too big in the pocket so it sat for over a year before a good friend said he'd been wanting one. He eventually lost it. I like my 940-2 a lot so I'm considering the Bugout, I hope your right about some new material combinations.

Great video. I think the bugout in a marbled carbon fiber handle would be amazing. I think it would add a bit of rigidity to the handle and have the increased tacticool factor of course...

    • @bobb.9917

That would call for "structured" marbled CF (apparently there are two types)....because there are no liners. That type is expensive...so I doubt we will see that, although it would look cool,

Being a smaller guy that edcs a knife. I prefer the Bugouts size. It’s thin enough I can carry it by my cellphone without it getting in the way when I pull it out. It’s also so light I can just forget it’s there and with the deep carry pocket it’s just nicer. Currently, I’m carrying around the Bailout M4, but Bugout for me.

Pretty sad to see the 551 went away with the black coated blade/handle options. Its still alive, but in it most basic form, and for around 130$ in S30. As a teenager in the early 2010s (getting into knifemaking and meeting a few knife makers like RJ martin, Becker, Gavko in person)- the 551 was constantly mentioned as one of the best EDC knives you could get at the time. I ended up getting a Paramilitary 2 instead, but ive always felt like my collection was lacking a Grip. I hope they bring back some of the options or maybe make a griptillian 2.

The bugout is lighter and thinner, which to me, makes it better for edc. But the griptilian seems to have a much better market for customization so I'm sticking to the grip.

How smooth is the action on the Bugout? Someone commented in another video that it wasn't as smooth as that of an Osbourne (740). I wonder if they cheapened up the action, or if it was just that the Bugout was new and not broken in yet...

Griptilian is the best blade hands down, you should have compared mini grip instead of the full-size one, mini grip is perfect for edc, I own 4 of them , the recent version of bm556 with s30v on the blade is a killer! I wanted to buy a bugout but after actually holding it I ended up grabbing another mini grip, it’s just so comfortable and useful for everyday needs. Bugout is not a bad choice but not even close to mini grip.

Slicey Dicey I probably have to apologize and accept the fact that bm535 bugout is really an excellent knife for the summer especially as it is so freakin lightweight. I actually bought one 2 days ago after watching your video review. You were right about it being an awesome knife! So I feel like I have to admit that I was a little skeptical and had my doubts. Just to keep it real I had to withdraw that single “dislike” you had for this particular “battle”. Kind of rambling, you should write a bullet point script, at least.
One reason to go for the Bugout: the super-sharp diamond grip pattern on the Griptilian tears up the pants under the pocket clip. It really needs to be ground down on the clip side.

I was very interested in your showdown. These are the only two Benchmades I own, I will buy a 940 and probably a nakamura and crooked river at some point. My feeling is much like yours; I would think I would like the grip more, but I carry the bugout more. It’s easier to carry and plenty useful for everyday use. I was laughing when you said the bugout hasn’t made it into the laundry. I’ve come close to doing that too, because it feels like nothing.

  • @daleray3895

Jesus why did I think the buyout was aluminum handled lol glad I got the grip. I don’t think benchmade is even offering 154cm for the grip anymore. All I see is the s30v now for new minus a few sites selling 154cm discontinued stock. It also comes in a few other metals too... d2 is also popular I believe.

I don't like the bugout that much personally. I just wen't to the sporting goods store to handle some blades as I lost my beloved emmisary. I fingerblasted the bugout first and was like "yeah, this is a pretty cool knife". Then I diddled the mini grip and it just made the bugout feel like a cheap toy. I understand that the point is to make it super light and thin but it's a small pocket knife. How is the extra few oz of weight really a problem for anyone? The heavier knives just FEEL sooooo much nicer and higher quality. I mean, you can even easily compress the scales on the Bugout, and I know it works just fine but it feels crappy. It just isn't confidence inspiring at all and I completely disagree that the bugout feels higher quality in the hand. Really don't get that vibe myself. If the Bugout had full liners I think I would like it a lot more but as it stands, especially for the price, I like almost every other Benchmade design better than the bugout. I was really surprised with how much I liked the mini grip. I don't love the looks of the grip series either but it just felt GREAT in the hand and like a much better quality knife. I would get a Civivi Elementum over the bugout any day.

Do you have any idea how a product gets its price? It is a combination of research, design, materials, the price of a mould has to be paid for, marketing, the amount of time someone has to work on it, the packaging, shipping etc etc. Most of the time a manufacturer puts something on the market and if it sells alot they will increase the price, if it sells less they may want to lower the price. It is not as simple as saying oh this one is made of more material than this one.
