This is great to see. A company taking some of their knives, even $100+ ones, and putting them to the test to show their use. That's a commendable quality you don't see often enough with any company nowadays.
I've had my Mini-Grip for two years now and I finally broke down and bought a 551 last week. Like you I tend to favor my Spydies, but this as well as my 940 & other BM's are all pretty awesome!
I have a 154cm verion of the Benchmade Griptillian (the version before the grip/handle change) for about just over 2 year period. I've taken it to the outdoors activity to doing normal daily tasks... and I have nothing bad to say about the knife in general. Infact, I am thinking about purchasing the new Griptillian with upgraded handle soon (even though I rarely purchase the same/similar model of a knife unless I break or lose it). I actually ordered mine from the actual Benchmade website due to the option of being able to get a customization on the blade (letters etc.). I don't see why more manufacturers don't do this. It was actually cheaper this way than to bring the blade to a local knife shop for the customization (at least the two shops I've been to anyway). Another great way to purchase these is by going through legit 3rd party knife suppliers (like BladeHQ... and there are few others that I've purchased from). I give this knife 5 out if 5 ☆'s.
ive carried this knife for the last 4 years i got it at a steal of a price. they labeled it attached to the paracord cutter for 20 dollars and i bought the para cord cutter and this came with it. it has become my favorite knife. it has not rusted at all and i use it for everything thing and and anything.
The test you did at 2:30 is a great way to test your knife!! I think it's badass that your griptillian was able to handle weather you guys think that was abuse or not. Unfortunately I did this to see if my 154CM steel sheepsfoot blade could handle this thinking it wouldn't brake or bend at all and ended up braking a quarter inch of the blade right off!! For my camp/bushcraft adventures I carry a mora companion that I don't mind prying, batoning or hitting. And my grip for paracord slicing up veggies or simply siting around a fire making a spoon out of a stick Point being I would not advise chopping splitting batoning with any folder!!
I took that very knife (except it had a d2 blade) with a fixed blade adamas on a 72 mile backpacking trip last month. I found myself using my griptillion for fire and food prep more than my fixed, not that I don't love the adamas, I just really love my griptillion.
Just got my mini grip in od green and I LOVE IT. It came insanely sharp, great deployment, love the axis lock, blade is centered when it's closed, no blade play, great ergonomics, compact, lightweight and sexy. What more can you ask for??
I really like your guys' honesty. Like in this video how you showed the lock fail, and on the ESEE candiru test some negatives of the sheath were pointed out. It feels a lot more genuine than other videos made solely to make money.
Good idea by Blade HQ to do these real time reviews. The outdoors setting is a terrific back drop and helps sell the product even further. Entertaining "marketing" for sure! Just subbed.
A fair and intelligent way to baton or chop wood especially in an emergency and you don't want to destroy the lock is by disengaging the locking mechanism while pounding on the blade. Test the blade not the locking mechanism because in an emergency if you break the lock you would be pounding on a unlocked blade anyway. And most folding blades will perform under battoning or chopping conditions if it's done intelligently and sensibly.
That is actually a really interesting idea, are you saying don't lock the knife up keep it half way open and then baton? You might not want to risk an injury if you were deep in the bush but an interesting idea. You wouldn't harm the locking mechanism doing it your way though so that's pretty smart.
@@bullridermusic2054 there are a few vids of this technique elsewhere on YT. when I’m out on the trails I carry a fixed blade for chopping. My spyderco folder which I also have with me is for smaller camp chores and general cutting use. Glock and ka bar make very decent fixed blades.
Nice to see Crocket show up on a Blade HQ review! The Bechmade Griptilian is definitely a hard charging little folder. As a medic, I opted for the modified sheepfoot blade on my Griptilian. It's been a great blade from day one! I've had it about 3 years now. Great Review!
Never had a griptillian, got one. Never had a 154CM blade, got it. Wow, is this a nice knife for the price. The blade steel is great for a nice sharp utility edge. Takes an edge easy as butter. You don't have to be so picky when hand sharpening, as opposed to s30v, ELMAX, s35....I really like this knife because I've been thrashing it for three weeks now and I've been nothing but impressed. I'm a die hard Spydie lover too:)
Over the last ten years the Griptilian is been the best working man's knife I've ever had. Best feature is the quick one handed open and close when holding a rope in the other hand quickly deployment and close Griptilian beats Spyderco. My biggest complaint is the new black coated blade the shiny old one was nicer to look at and after much real world use the coating looks like crap. I will confirm they do come extremely sharp just got three stiches trying to cut a ziptie off my grandsons fishing pole and slipped cut me clean to the tendon on my Index finger lol. Great video 👍
Great video gentlemen, love to see my folder of choice mostly stand up to heavy abuse. If I find myself needing to baton with it something has gone terribly wrong in my life but it’s nice to know she’ll take it.
I have a Doug Ritter MK I It is made by Benchmade and is in S30V I believe it is the same thing as a Griptilian only has an orange handle. I can get it hair shaving sharp, then cut some small sticks to make a/1 figure four trap and it is dull again. It will not hold an edge. I consider it as a complete waste of 100+ dollars.
That was a great idea to bring Crocket in on this review. I've subbed him for quite some time, and of all the videos I've favorited, most of them are his.
I love my 551. I can say, I would not hesitate to purchase the 551 again or any Benchmade with 154cm. I have had knives with 420j, 440c and AUS8. This 154cm out performs them by a mile. I'm glad I spent the money to purchase a knife blade of this quality.
My favourite and only knife I'd buy for long-term use. Lost 2 already, had to switch to a less expensive Kershaw that I can afford to hurt and use. Thanks for the video.
I got the D2 version (if you are looking for the D2 and dont want to spend the extra money for the custom griptilan, get the D2 version from cabelas) and it is incredible how sharp it stays as an EDC that actually gets used every day, and the axis lock is awesome!
I noticed this video off to the side of my own video on a Griptilain that I found on the street. It was run over numerous times and the handle scales destroyed, yet the lock and mechanism still work as intended! Its amazing and I have heard that Mel Pardue had designed the knife on pen and paper in a few minutes and the design just works amazingly. I am actually more impressed with the compression lock on my Spydeco Paramilitary 2 that I got from Blade HQ though, but this is a fine knife!
The lock did not fail, you all failed for using a folding knife for batoning. Every folder out there comes with a caution to NOT push or hit the spine.
It failed because the lock slipped from the pressure if he put his finger behind the axis so it can't slip back it would have to pry through the handle to fail
Videos like this make me realize how horrid I am at hand-sharpening, lol. I've never been able to get a shaving edge. Sharper than factory: yes...shaving: no.
Universal Kombat mechanical sharpeners are always bad, you should be using stones freehand or a fixed angle sharpeners. a lansky or kme will do you good for a good edge. chosera stones are good for if you're going to be doing it freehand
The Griptilian is fantastic used as a folder, as it was meant to be. You'd want something like a fixed blade Spartan or Ka-bar, or maybe a Condor Machete or Parang to baton with.
Great video, I enjoyed it. Would love to see Crocket in more videos because I know he is honest and not basing his opinion on any kind of bias. Can't say that about too many reviewers.
To be brutally honest I've found your blade presentations to be a bit rubbish. But this...this is something else in the most awesome of ways. Crocket is great in front of the camera, photography and production values are ace. I hope Benchmade gave you some money because this is amongst the best commercials for a folder I've seen. Please do keep this up, as a consumer and customer this is what I want. Great work!
Outstanding. With Crocket there to help put the Grip through its paces, this is a very credible and tough test for the popular Benchmade folder. Well done, friend.
I'm with Crocket as I love the manix2 (1 g10 and 2 LW) but I bought a Griptilian last week (full size) and went back same day to buy another In a different blade style I liked it so much. Looking to get another today, it is a great light weight folder. I do not like heavy folders a if I'm going to carry a heavy duty use knife...I strap a fixed blade on. Which my g10 manix2 and like folders are more collection pieces to me because of their weight, to each their own.
When you purchased the manix... some of us recommended the griptillian based on what you wanted... Can't say we didn't tell you so.. LOL. I have the mini and love it... I do love my spydercos though. Great vid Crocket.
I would say yes to abuse for a light utility folder BUT, I'm loving the idea of testing it's limits to see what it'll do in that role. "I don't care what it was designed to do, I wanna know what it can do" - Eugene Francis Kranz (NASA Flight Director)
Nice vid. Hey Crocket, I am in the camp that would not dream of doing that to my blade but thanks for doing it to yours or, I should say, Blade HQ's. Mel Pardue is an excellent and very experienced designer.
Interesting... I was actually trying to choose between the Griptillian, the Manix Blue, and the Spyderco Native for my next folder. The Grip is looking good, but who am i kidding, ill prolly wind up getting all three anyway.
I'm very impressed. He does make a good point about the use thing though. This isn't this knife's native enviroment, infact most people will probably just EDC this. But it's good to know that it can handle some abuse.
that would qualify as abuse i would never drive it into wood but with that being said its awesome to see that the 100 bucks or so you'll pay for this knife is totally worth it i own several benchmades including a pre-production number mini griptillian and ill have to say i love it and when benchmade says life time warranty they mean it ive had to send it back before because of something i did , i didnt have my original recipt but they fixed it sharpened it and sent it back ASAP
4:58 that doesn't seem to be the case for my Pro-Tech TR-3 or SBR, there is absolutely no blade play at all in all directions. The same thing for my Microtech Halo V, which is a single action OTF lol.
To me, this is abusing this knife. I’d never do the stuff you did with a pocket knife. I’d only do this with a fixed blade, but that’s just how I was raised. I’m very impressed by this knife and this has sold me on this knife.
i just received a paramilitary 2, of course it was out of stock on all majopr retailers like you guys, but your reccomendation pushed me over the edge. i hope i can get one from u aswell
Looking back at this video after so many years was great. Wish Blade HQ would do this kind of stuff Still. Out in the field testing is so powerful. Ben has made a big foot print in the History of this grest company. Wonder how the new Benchmade Narrows would hold up to this kind of work. No that would be a amazing video to watch. Just saying 😊
Got the griptilian today so far I'm super happy with it I still like my grizzly ridge little better I can't tell you why I'm not sure it's just feels better
I have been saving up money for months now and i finaly got enough to order a custom one. 155$. Im broke again but i got my first nice knife coming in the mail in 2-6 weeks.
Have used and ABUSED my 530 for a LONG time...I have the 556 Mini - it's too small for my L/XL glove hands to open easy....so I just ordered a full size Grip from Blade HQ. I like all my knives to have serrations so I got the 551s in Satin...really love Benchmade warranty and service. I have a few Spyderco Military models...I have Emerson's CQC-7....I have had a lot of makers pass thru...I just fell in LOVE with Benchmade - the knives are great...but when you call them and need something - they go OVER the top to make you happy and don't charge you most stuff - even deep carry pocket clips! They send them to you FREE!
Probably why he said " in these conditions I'd choose a fixed blade all the way" . Several times he said this isn't what this knife is ment for. Just to see what it will take.. goddamn can you not hear???
Both folding and fixed blades have their uses and places. But for minor things like cutting cords, shaving, or opening a box it's great. Fixed field blades are more suiting for heavy outdoor use. Chopping wood, gutting fish, defense against an animal, etc. It's god just to pack both in your gear when you go outdoors. A knife for minor uses, a big fixed knife for heavy duty work.
Just saying i use all my knifes this way. Yes even my 200+$ knife. If there is a task then there is a tool. in most of my cases its my knife that answers. Why spend all the money on a great knife if your going to baby it. Heck a gas station knife can stand up to being babied , and for way less money. And once you destroy your knife it allows you to try another one. Use for what ever you need at the moment and worry later if it made it. GREAT reviews guys keep up the good work!
I'm wondering if a Cold Steel Recon 1 would have lockup failure under similar circumstances. I just purchased a Mini Recon 1 and it seems like a very tough little knife.
well, I would ask CPM S30V or 154CM? About edge retention, definitly S30V, but not for a big amount, maybe two or three days more been outdoors and using both knives exactly the same way
I think this is going to be my backup blade when backpacking. Main blade a kbar marine utility knife. But the knife is available in 4 steels. what do you think is the best choice? 154CM D2 N680 S30V
The only way you can abuse your knife is by leaving it on a shelf. Great video 😎
Chris Zimmer 😳
Well said:)
I agree
Amen.
This is great to see. A company taking some of their knives, even $100+ ones, and putting them to the test to show their use. That's a commendable quality you don't see often enough with any company nowadays.

Best Benchmade knife test I have seen to this date keep up the great vids and reviews
Love my 551, but I must say this is more than I'd ask of it. Good vid guys, nice to see this type of collaboration.
the field testing is much better than the normal reviews... more field testing please!
Though i will take the normal reviews as opposed to nothing.
The lock did not fail, you all failed for using a folding knife for batoning. Every folder out there comes with a caution to NOT push or hit the spine.
SikMisfits I've never seen a whole paper detacated
SikMisfits bro you clearly didn't hear what he was saying the whole vid
It failed because the lock slipped from the pressure if he put his finger behind the axis so it can't slip back it would have to pry through the handle to fail
dude. they know that.
SikMisfits did u even hear what he said after? He also wasn't wrong. The blade failed

Universal Kombat mechanical sharpeners are always bad, you should be using stones freehand or a fixed angle sharpeners. a lansky or kme will do you good for a good edge. chosera stones are good for if you're going to be doing it freehand
Use the Sharpmaker
Nice ball python
I use green polish after the stones and with a little experimenting I can get an edge I could shave my face with
Not to mention doing it without accidentally scratching up the finish
The Griptilian is fantastic used as a folder, as it was meant to be. You'd want something like a fixed blade Spartan or Ka-bar, or maybe a Condor Machete or Parang to baton with.
Great video, I enjoyed it. Would love to see Crocket in more videos because I know he is honest and not basing his opinion on any kind of bias. Can't say that about too many reviewers.
im a tech at a capped landfill and i have been looking at this knife. u guys sold me on it
I'd love to see this knife really put through the gauntlet. Stabbing sheet metal, gelatin dummy slice tests, rope slice we NEED MORE!
I love my Grip.

Another Cr0Cket fan here.
Dude, I have to say you are a fantastic camera man and editor.
You and Cr0cket make a great team.
Subscribing
Yet again another outstanding knife review from knifehq
Great to see a collaboration guys! And test...
Outstanding. With Crocket there to help put the Grip through its paces, this is a very credible and tough test for the popular Benchmade folder. Well done, friend.
Nice video. Nice to see blades getting worked. Some are for show but I enjoy working my knives.
Did NOT expect to see crocket but it was a pleasant surprise =D
I'm with Crocket as I love the manix2 (1 g10 and 2 LW) but I bought a Griptilian last week (full size) and went back same day to buy another In a different blade style I liked it so much. Looking to get another today, it is a great light weight folder. I do not like heavy folders a if I'm going to carry a heavy duty use knife...I strap a fixed blade on. The benchmade 162 is a monster S30V steel bushcrafting knife.
very well made test and shooting. I appreciated a lot your way. And it's so informative! Thank you
thats one amazing knife i normally dont like almost every knife but for me this is the CHOSEN ONE !! :O
I would say yes to abuse for a light utility folder BUT, I'm loving the idea of testing it's limits to see what it'll do in that role. "I don't care what it was designed to do, I wanna know what it can do" - Eugene Francis Kranz (NASA Flight Director)
Well, Its amazing Its a very solid feeling knife and a very good size for everyday carry. Very satisfied and I referred you guys to all of my friends!
Nice vid. Hey Crocket, I am in the camp that would not dream of doing that to my blade but thanks for doing it to yours or, I should say, Blade HQ's. Mel Pardue is an excellent and very experienced designer.
can we do more field tests like this on popular knives you guys sell? love this stuff
Crocket is the man! Love his vids.
I have to say, this video and another video where a guy stands on a mini-griptilian convinced me to go out and buy a benchmade griptilian today.
My EDC knife. Sobering to see Axis-Lock give like that. Great video though.
a6m5 zero when did it give?
Cr0ket does great reviews I enjoy his videos
Interesting... I was actually trying to choose between the Griptillian, the Manix Blue, and the Spyderco Native for my next folder.
The Grip is looking good, but who am i kidding, ill prolly wind up getting all three anyway.
Probably would never do that to my Griptillian but good to know I can.
We so want this knife, we own a few Benchmades a and were always look through the catalog for more we want.
The Glockbrothers
I'm very impressed. He does make a good point about the use thing though. This isn't this knife's native enviroment, infact most people will probably just EDC this. But it's good to know that it can handle some abuse.
How about a video on how you sharpen your knives? I would love to get some of my older knives back in circulation and that benchmade was cray sharp!
that would qualify as abuse i would never drive it into wood but with that being said its awesome to see that the 100 bucks or so you'll pay for this knife is totally worth it i own several benchmades including a pre-production number mini griptillian and ill have to say i love it and when benchmade says life time warranty they mean it ive had to send it back before because of something i did , i didnt have my original recipt but they fixed it sharpened it and sent it back ASAP
4:58 that doesn't seem to be the case for my Pro-Tech TR-3 or SBR, there is absolutely no blade play at all in all directions. The same thing for my Microtech Halo V, which is a single action OTF lol.
Glad I watched this. Don’t want a benchmade failing on me
Good job guys. Thanks for the review!
Just ordered the exact same knife... Great vid & very informative!
1:45
**lockup fails**
**country music stops**
Awesome video. Makes me want a griptilian again.
Just saying 😊
totally agree, my favorite steal is the D2 but S30v is great too.
This was AWESOME guys.
Got the griptilian today so far I'm super happy with it I still like my grizzly ridge little better I can't tell you why I'm not sure it's just feels better
aside from the 51, this is the best benchmade i've used.
edit/p.s.: the Griptilian mogs the Bugout
Clearly, this 551 needs to be placed in foster care: I volunteer! Great video.
You should do some testing with Cold Steel knifes to see if they fail.. They are strong knifes.
Cali Vapor knives. Knife is a singular noun or a verb. I.e. "I'll knife you". Knifes isn't a word
benchmade adamas = folder made for batoning
Adam Wilhelm it looks rlly ugly tho
Great knive. But for batonning use s fixed blade or Cold Steel folder. The Adamas also failed on the lock…
great video, would love to see more like this. Beautiful country.
I think the mini grip is a little bit higher quality because it has full stainless liners
Nice filming. I own a griptillian as well and it's my current edc.
Great torture test/review. Looks like a great knife!
Great video man!! Love how you guys edit! Have this as my starting video!
I got mine in bright orange because my 940 is green with a black blade
I have been saving up money for months now and i finaly got enough to order a custom one. 155$. Im broke again but i got my first nice knife coming in the mail in 2-6 weeks.
I'm a Crocket fan! Great video!
In my opinion, no folding knife should be a camping knife. Fixed blade is where it's at.
Depends on what you have to go with it.
Yep less moving parts=less chance to fail by faaar
Probably why he said " in these conditions I'd choose a fixed blade all the way" . Several times he said this isn't what this knife is ment for. Just to see what it will take.. goddamn can you not hear???
Both folding and fixed blades have their uses and places. But for minor things like cutting cords, shaving, or opening a box it's great. Fixed field blades are more suiting for heavy outdoor use. Chopping wood, gutting fish, defense against an animal, etc.
It's god just to pack both in your gear when you go outdoors. A knife for minor uses, a big fixed knife for heavy duty work.
Vela S what little things do you mean
also as far as being carbon the coating on the blade is pretty tough so i wouldn't worry about rust.
Can you field test the S&W Special Ops? I just got mine today in the mail and its GLORIOUS!
154CM

S30V
Omega springs still hold me back
One of my top favorites!
For an outdoor heavy use folder i use a CS Recon one
