    I maintain that 30 Seconds to Mars’ greatest failure is that their name is dependent on either a warp drive or a severe misunderstanding of astrophysics.

    After Tenacious D's release, I'm just clutching my Pick of Destiny DVD and shaking in fear. The fact that Jack Black hypes Post-Apocalypto up on his twitter as their "new movie" and thus making me draw comparisons to Pick of Destiny makes me WEEP. And I don't like Pick of Destiny quite as much as I used to, so when I'm still going to bat for it, you *know* they've fucked it!

  • @Bbpagewolf
    @Bbpagewolf 5 лет назад +68

    As a HUGE Thirty Seconds to Mars fan, I was incredibly shocked, upset, and angry to see them release an album like America. Why Jared Leto thought it was a good idea to release something like this is just mind boggling. After always portraying himself as “the guy that would never sellout in the music scene and rock music being his ultimate passion” he completely went against his own praises and sold out hard. The self titled album, A Beautiful Lie, and especially This Is War were absolutely stellar albums. Hell even Love, Lust, Faith, & Dreams while having extremely vile low points also had incredibly stellar high points and those high points were some of the best songs they ever wrote in my opinion. While easily the weakest offering from them up to that point, I still wouldn’t call it a bad album by any means. America though, that album hurt and it hurt HARD. As a fan I sincerely hope they bounce back from this on their next album (if there is a next album) and put out the good music that they should be putting out.

    • @vader97100
      @vader97100 5 лет назад +4

      Great to see we feel the same way on Love Lust Faith and Dreams, 30STM was definitely my worst this year with FOB coming in right behind it. It is hard to see Leto write good music again, I think the fame has gotten to him. Shannon had the only ok point in America with "Remedy", which was all him, Jared showed nothing...

    • @Bbpagewolf
      @Bbpagewolf 5 лет назад +7

      I hated Fall Out Boy’s album more personally. There were a few songs on America I liked. I do agree with you on Remedy being one of them, but I also liked Walk On Water and Great Wide Open which is my favorite track. Dangerous Night was ok for me too, but not special and everything else sucks. I hated EVERYTHING off of Mania but then again I’ve never been a Fall Out Boy fan to begin with even in their hay day. Regardless though, those are my 2nd and 3rd worst albums respectively. My worst album of the year is an album that not one person has talked about, 0 to BrokeNCYDE by BrokeNCYDE. Why you ask....because it’s fucking BrokeNCYDE that’s why and they are the bottom of the barrel in the world of music.

    • @kaidemelloch12

      After second album they sold out. Hell i loved the second one but i could easily see even that album as selling out compared to the first.

    • @Bbpagewolf
      @Bbpagewolf 5 лет назад +2

      If you’re talking about 30STM then I highly disagree. The songs on This Is War were very atmospheric and progressive. Sure it was a poppier side of progressive but it was still rock, the instrumentation on that album was beautifully played, and Jared Leto was at his absolute best vocally and even lyrically on that album. That was the album that showed how much talent and crossover potential the band actually had and how melodic and soulful they can be. Not to mention the songs on the album bring the kind of scale and scope that just send shivers down your spine and tears to your eyes in all the best ways. Closer to the Edge is probably the most mainstream song on that album but even that song has the scale that you won’t in your average cynical pop song. I would say after that they started to sellout and even A Beautiful Lie was following a popular Emo trend at the time, but This Is War always felt like their most genuine record to me and it was the record that ultimately got me interested into the band.

      1. OML at least had SOME touch of what Linkin Park used to be. FOB and 30STM were a total 180 from where they used to be.
      2. As much as I dislike Imagine Dragons, I have to admit that Natural is a good song.

    Most of the new bands just don't do anything for me. I liked music from the 60s and 70s when I was a young GenX'er in high school and college in the 90s, and I have seen very few bands that have made me change my mind. I mean, the Foo FIghters, The Sword, In This Moment... all good bands who have released albums of varying quality that I own and listen to, but the newer bands just don't do much. Thankfully I'm both old enough that the rock music I like goes back almost 30 years before my birth and there seems to be a limitless supply of obscure stuff to find. Plus, I listen to pretty much anything, classical to R&B to Jazz and beyond, that I'll never run out of stuff. I'm glad I don't do what you do, Rock Critic, because it would force me to endure a lot of rubbish just to find something good. I'm in my mid 40s now and am not in the best of health, so there's no way I have time for that.

    Well if many people shared their opinions on bands on this list, I guess I share mine too.
    Dishonorable Mentions:
    1- I never liked Godsmack, so I don't like their new album either, but I guess this one have some fine musical moments.
    2-Imagine Dragons sucks, but hey, at least Origins doesn't have Thunder or Believer.
    3-Boring. For real I can't understand why many people says what this album is their best. IMO- it's their worst and most boring album and The Man Who Married a Robot is a cancer.
    4-I love Amity Affliction, even tho their sound start getting samey after Let the Ocean Take Me. But Misery was blegh, dissapointment. That being said, I like Drag the Lake, Kick Rocks and Ivy (Doomsday).
    5-My bigest dissapointment of the year...actually it's new Panic At the Disco, but Muse is close second. Not a bad album, but easily their worst, even Drones has more highlights than this thing (and Propaganda is atrocious).
    Actual list:
    10- Someone said this is the Punk Goes Pop for charity purposes and he is right. Also, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT RANDITION OF LOSING MY RELIGION?!WTF Movements?
    9- Meh, I stoped caring about this band than Venom came out so new album does not dissapointed me. It was still pretty bad.
    8- Fun fact- I started listen to this band because of how good Crash said they are and I enjoyed pretty much all they done from Naveed to Gravity. I wish they would stop put out music after Gravity thou, cause every next album by them was more boring than previous and this one is (I hope) the bottom for them.
    7-STP deserved better. Their albums from begining to No 4 are amazing. But after that no, just no. And their Self-titled 2.0 is easily their worst and most annoying (I can't stand Meadows, mostly chorus).
    6-No shame- I love Disturbed, so I was really dissapointed by the new one. Boring and generic radio alt rock bullshit without any care or love in it. Nothing but a lazy """hard""" songs and attempts to rewrite their cover of Sound of Silence in the least imaginative way.
    5-I diddn't listen to this album, so no opinion.
    4-I hope Frank Turner continues to make great albums like Positive songs for Negative people, Tape Hear Deck and England Keep My Bones, cause his recent album wasn't it. 1933 still good.
    3-Never Liked Ministry, they are not for me, but I can understand appeal. Amerikkkant (blegh) thou is just atrocious and get every inch of hate it deserves (also new Otep album similarly bad).
    2-I used to like this band, I can't remember why. But even in my days of being a fan, I would hate this one because it's just so boring and have so little care put in what if I still was a fan I would probably was more upset. But cause I'm not, I can just said it sucks.
    1-Fuck Mania, Fuck AMERICA. They both similar in their awfulness. Like King 810 and Emmure in 2014 they are worthy of sharing top of 2018.
    Well it was fun, best list sure be fun as well, can't wait for it release! My AOTY is Idles btw.

I still kept on defending their earlier stuff, but Mania was so bad that it legit made me wonder if FOB was even a good band to begin with, and unfortunately, the answer is no. They were decent back in the day, but there were better bands in their genre. I honestly still listen to some of their old songs, but only for nostalgic reasons. I would still call them a guilty pleasure, but Mania pissed away every single sign of genuine appreciation I had for this band.
