    Those tunnels had nothing to do with silver mining. They were constructed to divert rain water under the city to prevent the devastating floods which would periodically destroy the city.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  4 года назад +22

    • @FinnDelMundoTravel

      They kind of were to do with silver mining actually, in that, when the work was drying up in the actual mines, the workers were redeployed in the city to work on roading. So the two are linked (slightly) 😬

    I studied medicine in Guadalajara 50+ years ago and while there co-founded "Los Tiempos Pasados," which became the premier medieval music group in Mexico, based in Guanajuato. My dear friend Armando Lopez, the other co-founder, still lives and performs in this highly literary and cultured city, and I have traveled there many times to lecture and perform. It is immersed in a sense of learning and creativity, and takes you into a world far removed from the slick and superficial cultural trends so pervasive these days.

Glad you love the city though, living there for many years sure was an awesome experience. Hopefully you’ll go back! Saludos!

    It's my favorite city in Mexico as well. Fly into CDMX and drive to Pena de Bernal, Tequisquiapan, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende and end the trip in Guanojuato. It's a fabulous trip which I've done a couple times.

    Have always loved visiting in Mexico. The 6,600 ft. elevation can make hill climbing a challenge. Hope to be in San Miguel de Allende in 2021 so probably should drop by here too. I love the colors, music, and the nice people.

    Mask up, when anywhere, annoying as it might in fact, be! I hate wearing them too, but they and keeping one's distances, are two great ways of keeping COVID at bay.

    Thanks for another lovely walking tour for those of us locked down in cold, grey climates!
    I've noticed that some commenters are focusing in on a trend of "poorer" countries having more humanity and warmth, but I'd wager in the case of Mexico it has more to do with the emphasis on a cohesive family-unit.
    Where the USA/Western countries tend to emphasize individuslism and leaving home young to fend for oneself, there is more collectivism in a Mexican household. At the end of the day, they have family for moral support. (This is a generalization, of course. Also, its much more religious, but that's a whole other topic to crack into...)

    • @Becky_Cal
      @Becky_Cal 4 года назад +4

      Agree. It has nothing to do with the poor or rich. Asian and Latin American countries are classified as “collectivist” cultures rather than individualistic (which describes the US and most of Western Europe). Not only does that create stronger family ties but also stronger communities bc people realize their actions affect those around them and view the world as “We” versus “Me”. ☺️ This is what I love about Mexico and after living there for six months in 2018, I’ll be moving there permanently in 2021.

    Hey Gabriel, I am a big fan of your videos. Guanajuato is also my favorite Mexican city (also San Miguel de Allende). I am from San Luis Potosi (near by). Next time you can, visit the "Huasteca potosina": lots of rivers and waterfalls, outdoor adventures. I live in Montreal, if you are ever come back to the east part of Canada, let me know, I can show you around. I also love to travel and explore completely new places! Be safe and enjoy the hospitality of Mexico!

    I have a good friend, here in Texas---who comes from there. When he moved to the US 20 years ago, he said one of the things that blew him away about the US was all the people's yards--with all the green grass. They don't have that there--all the houses are right up against each other, and usually directly on the street. If you're lucky to have a small backyard--it is usually just dirt--no grass. He also fell in love with the food at Long John Silver's--Go figure! But of course he loves Mexico, and misses it...he goes to visit his large family there several times a year. He has shown me many pictures and videos of it. They are very proud of their beautiful cathedral there. And yes--the architecture and landscaping are stunning.
