- The prestigious first fish from the river Coquet remains uncaught so following a spate I attempt to cement my place in the annals of local history and catch it on the fly. Aside from the fishing though work beckons and we head back prematurely to the bakery for a spot of scone making and baking.
New to the channel but it’s made in heaven for me - fishing and cooking are my favourite things, in that order! Need to find your food. Thanks for a great video Jill R, NE fly fisher.

Just having a chuckle to myself regarding the your unexpected otter encounter, I've so far had two distinct "shit myself" moments with them while night fishing for sea trout, first one was on the Till a few years back, and the other one was on my local river, "The Real River Tyne😜" up in East Lothian. As you will know because you've already gave it a go, fly fishing for sea trout in the stillness of the night requires extreme stealth, resulting in a state of heightened senses and expectation. So wading down a good pool trying not to make waves in the water, casting as little as possible, and as gently as possible, unfortunately means these nocturnal shits can arrive right underneath your rod before you make your next move again, which as I found out can result in what I can only describe as an "huge explosion of water" right in your face!

I'm scarred for life from my first nocturnal expedition. Demons of the night is very apt. If they were just a bit bigger I think they'd look at a human and fancy their chances.

Cheers, I got sent a picture of a spanker caught yesterday on private water at Morwick. I've been fishing mainly the Tyne but it's nice to be on the Coquet when the water is right. Getting to grips with the switch yet?

Cheers, it reacts with the bicarb and makes for that nice fluffy texture. Buttermilk is my favourite to use for scones but it's harder to get hold of.
