    many thanks pal. I would have normally got a plumber to do this job, but after your vid I decided to do this myself, I ordered a Fluidmaster Pro400UK from Amazon.... 20 mins later. no more water hammer at the send of the cistern fill. The 50 people that downvoted.... they have never had to replace a fill valve. Thanks mate

    Thank you so much for this. Our inlet valve high adjuster snapped in the night and popped up lifting the cistern lid and spraying water everywhere. The tap was on full for some reason. It's Friday, there's no way on earth a plumber will be available today and I can't exactly afford weekend rates. I've been looking for a 'how to' video for ages and you've saved the day. Thank you.

    While you are in the Bathroom/Toilet just pull a double piece of toilet paper off the roll, form it into a sausage and wrap it round the inlet and twist it, if it stays a uniform colour it is good, if it leaks you get drooping ends, an easy visual clue.

    Heck, for any toilet projects where I need to drain the tank or bowl, I just stick my shopVac in there, with the reducer nozzle attachment. (Remember to remove the vac filter first!) - That water comes out 100% in a matter of 2-3 seconds, and you've got a dry workspace!

      Thanks, No I would not recommend this valve or any valve with a plastic threaded inlet tube as I have had problems with them in the past (after a couple of years). I'd chose a valve with a brass connection, like this- fave.co/2dTlBKf (you can also get cheaper ones)

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  5 лет назад

      You just have to get one that will fit in your particular cistern. Often you have to check the height of the inlet valve and just check I the cistern to ensure you have enough room.

    How much would it cost to get a plumber to do that / how much do you charge?!
    Whatever it is, it saved me that amount. I used a Siamp Compact 99B for the job though due to me having a corner toilet. It would be better if the new inlet came with a new washer though...

    I always end up spending lots of time with small leaks around the inlet valve - can u do a video on how to make sure the washer is correct there ? Should I use ptf tape when joining back up ?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад

      +Alps P
      I'm afraid I won't get chance to do this for some time as the toilets in this house are not in positions to easily film.
      A good tip a mate of mine gave me is to clean around the entry hole, insert the valve and the washer and pit the nut on loosely. Connect up the water to the valve- then tighten the flange nut that holds the valve- this way if the pipework is not completely square to the valve it sorts out that problem. I don't normally use PTFE tape in such situations as the sealing washers should do the trick.

    really usefull video, just one thing how can i know what is required or suitable height of the inlet valve .

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 лет назад

      Thanks, you can measure the existing valve from the bottom of the cistern.
      Some modern valves can be adjusted in height. The only thing you need to look out for is the width of the valve as some cisterns are compact and do not have much room for a wide fill valve.

    • @UmarFarooqUK

    Im getting an annoying little leak from the main inlet bit and the plastic nut. I've done it much tighter than you did in the video even just to be sure. Can't see where the water is coming from still. I even put ome plumbers tape around the threads/screw on both sides. Pretty annoying. Might just get some water proof sealant and stick it around the hole on the inside which is very over kill but should get rid of it no problem

    Good Video but on my cistern the water level does not rise at all but is constantly filling and discharging into the pan at the same time. It does not seem to be the same problem as yours.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  10 лет назад

      That can be caused by a faulty flush valve/syphon (the water is not being contained in the cistern).
      Is it one of the flush valves with the 2 buttons on top as these are notorious for sticking?
      Sometimes adding some washing up liquid can help as it lubricates the plastic components

    • @icespeckledhens
      @icespeckledhens 10 лет назад +1

      ***** Yes it has got the two buttons on top. I have tried some washing up liquid and it seems to have stabilized the situation a bit. However, I think it might be an idea to replace the flush valve assembly, how universal are these assemblies I do not know the make other than it came from B&Q three or four years ago.

      There are a few different makes, it probably makes sense to buy a whole new kit, they are all a standard size to fit the hole in the cistern- or you can remove the old one and see what the make is and then get a replacement flush mechanism.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 лет назад

      They are pretty much standard, but best to measure the height of the valve and check before buying one.
      If you can I'd recommend getting one with a brass shank rather than plastic as they last much longer-
