This is a fabulous performance performed in a great space. It seems that everything is "just right". There is a lot of humanity in the playing. The recording is exceptional. Congratulations to all.

    Fantastic coördination.
(Though the microphones are a bit too
    close bound to the instruments
which makes the sound sharper than it should.
But what a feast. Great !

I think the prelude could be played a bit faster.

Excellent playing, but the fugue desperately needed more CELLOS! The bass part was very much starved of volume. This is a 4 part fugue, for 4 EQUAL voices. I could barely hear the bass part especially when it was playing the main theme, and particularly in the final section, where the violins and violas drowned the cellos out. I know this is only one piece of music, but I suspect that in general this group needs more cellos, and maybe one more double bass as well!

What are you talking about? The bass part is clearly audible. Of course in a fugue, when a new voice enters with the subject, it makes sense to emphasize that voice for the duration of the subject.

The fantasia is unfortunately just lukewarm and meek, lacking will, authority, sublimity, strictness, stubbornness, danger, power. The tempo is too slow and the climaxes not brought out. It needs more cello and perhaps double bass to imitate the effect of the low registers. And the orchestra clearly needs a conductor. The fugue is better but still to a lesser extent with the same problems, minus the tempo which is fine and a more successful though somewhat uncompleted characterisation. This work fits per se fantastically for a string orchestra and this acoustics.
