What a sweet video! I bought some fresh figs from a neighbor and I have more that I can consume! I want to make some jam, so here I am! Also, she sold me a 1’ tall cutting from her tree last fall. I planted it and it’s almost 5’ tall now. No fruit yet, but maybe this fall. I think I’ll call my tree MeeMaw!
I was born and raised in the South, and fig jam is one of the things I miss the most. We strung old aluminum pans (the kind pie crusts come in) and ran a bit of rope to the house. When the birds and squirrels got to stealing the fruit we could reach out the back door and pull that rope. The pans would flutter and twinkle, and the varmints would scatter. Wasn't fool proof but it did slow them down. Love figs straight from the tree, too.
Was over at a neighbors yesterday standing under the shade of a fig tree full of figs. She told me I could have all I wanted that she had gotten all she would use. I'd never done anything with figs before and am not crazy about eating them right of the tree. Checked notifications and saw this. Guess I'll be out in 100 degree SC heat picking figs. Thanks Buck. And I mean that.
My mama makes quite a bit of jam, seals it and throws it in the freezer...she'd have a lot of wasted figs, otherwise. I for one love to eat figs right off the tree, which is a taste I acquired only in the past few years. For years and years I couldn't get over my association of figs with the dreaded Fig Newton, arguably the least satisfying of all cookies (I decided this at a very young age).
Great recipe. Very similar to how I make my jams. It's always good to make jam. We've quite a fair bit of fruits from the garden and end up making a ton of different jams each year. Lovely to tie us over for the winter - and great during the summor. I myself am quite fond of a small bowl of lactose free yoghurt with a bit of Jam in it stirred. As a small desert. Nom nom nom.
I can't even tell you how excited I was to see this video pop up! I just bought me 2 different variety of fig trees this past week. Not sure how long it will take for me to get enough figs to make fig jam but I will be saving this video for future fig jam making. Yours and Mama Redbuck's recipes has never failed me. :)
Hi from Australia. I have made fig jam using several different recipes. all not so good. Used this recipe today, so simple and worked a treat. and its yummy. thanx for sharing. Linda B
I just made this !! So easy and delicious. I too don't like a lot of sugar so I used way more honey and less refined sugar . I'm excited to play with this recipe.
We just bought a home on 4 and a half acres with several big beautiful fig trees and I can't wait to try out this recipe! Your mom is so adorable, I love her! 😊 ❤️ Can you also can this jam to preserve it longer? Thank you so much for this sweet video and recipe!!
Thank you for sharing both the receipe, the wonderful picking experience and the presence of such sweet woman. So glad I found this tutorial, as I just picked fresh figs from my own fig trees today!
I love you meemaw! Next time try adding a little lemon or lime to enhance the flavor of the fig. The acidity is very tasty and breaks up the sweetness a bit and preserves it longer ❤️ especially when making large batches of fig jam/preserves
Awesome recipe, Chef Buck. Those figs look so fresh and sweet. The way Chef Mama described everything and taught us was very cool. Thank you so much for sharing this with us :) Have a nice weekend!!
@@ChefBuckRecipes Yes, Chef. The outdoors looked beautiful in this video. I feel bad for squirrels too! I think squirrels will like the Fig jam as well.
Omg. This video made me so happy. My little mamaw had a fig tree and we used to do the exact same thing. Oh the memories this brought back. Thank you for this.
What a gem of a video with your mama. I loved it. I have a young fig tree and i can't wait to get a real harvest from it. I bought two pounds of figs last night and I can't decide if I want to make this fig jam or caramelized figs!! I think I'd better buy some more before they are out of season!! Thank you for sharing your sweet mama, and for the recipe :)
Years ago, while living in the West Valley, LA. CA. I ha a large Fig tree growing, but the squirrels weren't the problem, I was. I was always eating the ripe Figs before anyone could pick and make anything with them . . . LOL.
Thanks for the video. I wasn't 100% on what I can do with figs asside frome eating as-is. I love fresh figs, but generally we don't have any where I live. I just got a celeste fig tree for my patio in the frozen wastes of Northern Wisconsin. I can't wait for the harvest next summer to try this out!
Great video! What variety of fig is this? And the USDA zone please? I have two fig shrubs in the pots but want to put them in ground but I am scared winter will get them!
Thank you! I finally found someone with the same fig tree. We got to beat the deer. The tree in our yard is large and old still produces. I didn't know what to do with all the figs. (Not complaining never had one fresh 'till the other day. awesome fruit)
yeah....Mama's having a bumper fig crop this year--2 years in a row now!--usually she has a good fig year and then the trees don't do as well the following summer...she must be living right
if we ever have a yard again, I bet planting a fig tree will be one of the first things my wife does...we had a fig tree in our old yard, but it never got as large and fruitful as my moms tree
Ordered a fig sprout off the interweb planted it in april 2018 ,that fall it was 6 ft. tall . It's now sept. 2019 and it is 10 ft. tall with 50+ figs ready to harvest ............
I came across a simple fruit sauce of pureed strawberries mixed with fig jam for ice cream or for pound cake. I also saw fig jam spread on rustic Italian bread slices with arugula, prosciutto and asiago.
The recipe was exactly what I was looking for but I have a suggestion for the cameraman, you’re Mema would have really appreciated you helping pick figs instead of running and getting a beer and when she suggested getting buttermilk she would’ve been proud of you if you would’ve said sure I’ll run down and do that right now instead of saying oh I’ll have toast tomorrow. Filming for RUclips is fun there’s no doubt about it , but please serve your grandmother she deserves it!
does anyone have an answer for what a fig tastes like? I have no idea how to describe a fig taste. I just asked CG and she acted like she was about to answer, but now she's just thinking, so she doesn't know what to say either :^)
When it comes to figs, Mama is a lot faster than the squirrels :^) ...hope everybody has a great weekend!
You go, Mama! Thanks for sharing your precious mom with us, Buck!
thanks for watching....I wish I could get my mama in every video :^)
Why you didn't help her!!!??!!!
😂😂

Your mama is such an angel. Love this video and the jam looks amazing!
thanks...she's the best cook I know
What a sweetheart. Reminds me of my mom.. rest her soul. LUCKILY she planted two fig trees in the yard 14yrs ago. 😁

My mom ends up freezing most of her jam, especially for years like this when she gets so many figs...I can eat a lot, but only so much in a day!
Thank you for sharing! Could you please ask mama is I need to store the jam in the refrigerator? And how long does it last?

How can I plant a fig tree l live in Oklahoma, does fig grow here in okla.?
I came across a simple fruit sauce of pureed strawberries mixed with fig jam for ice cream or for pound cake. I also saw fig jam spread on rustic Italian bread slices with arugula, prosciutto and asiago.

I'd love to see that! I know my mama mostly goes on youtube to figure out how to fix her lawnmower
I have those same plates!
Nothing like homemade jams and jellies, could you tell list what kind of fig tree your mama planted?
there's more than one kinda fig tree? ...I'll have to ask her
Love watching your videos. There always so soothing and homey feeling 😊

Made this jam and it was delicious. Question for this type of jam since we let it cool for a couple of hours, do we need to sterilize
the jars??
very nice
I have those same plates I bought in the early 90's!!!!!!
Looks awesome 👏
super kereeen mas bro... 👍🏻👍🏻

How long does this last in the fridge
Does the burned toast make the jam taste better?
