  • Hi I am still new to model boat kit building but really enjoy the hobby
    When I built my first kit I really struggled to understand the planking so hopefully this video may help someone new to model boat kits.
    I am still learning all the time and hope to get better over time with more practice hopefully this video of the first planking of OcCre model Polaris might get you interested enough to starting this fun hobby.

    Martin, great job! This part of the build is one of the most crucial for a good foundation. Well done!

      Hi the tool is a pin pusher most model shops sell them and also available online from Amazon and EBay check the size of what you order as some sold online are to large for the small nails best to buy a branded one from the main model kit makers OCcre or Amati to start hope this helps enjoy your building. 👍

    Nice work. However I have never understood why builders do not adhere to “scale planking” methods. While stealers and joggles are part and parcel, I have found a scale approach is actually easier and far more fair. A patchwork approach just seems the long way round the harbor.

      Hi KillerKane I think you right I have been following the instructions provide with these kits but the more I build the more I learn about model boats and think I will try to go for full length tapered planks in future. Thanks for the great comment

    • @killerkane1957

      @@martinfranklin9369leisuretime I use an old exacto plane. I hold it still and blade up. I pull the strip over the bed/blade. Then lightly sand the area where the taper starts. Works great for me and is very fast. You can still separate sheer, whale, etc. Just measure and spile each bulkhead and transfer to the strip. In a short time you will be able to do this by eye. Best of luck to you! Build away!!

    Excellent work and so educational to watch. If you can't get balsa timber, what other timber can you use. You would still soak other timber? How long to you leave wood to dry after clamping into position? Thanks.

    • @martinfranklin9369leisuretime
      @martinfranklin9369leisuretime  Год назад +1

      Hi thank you for you kind comment.
      You can use various woods most common is Beech,Lime,Ramin which come in the sets All can be soaked in water to make them pliable to bend.
      As for drying most planks dry after a couple of hours at room temperature.

    Hi Martin thanks for the videos a big help I am just starting polaris my first ship. 1 Question what type of glue do you use to glue on the outer Hull and the planking I cannot find a glue like the texture they use on the occre video's I am using a white wood glue but am talking about the brush on glue.THANKS.

    • @martinfranklin9369leisuretime
      @martinfranklin9369leisuretime  Год назад +1

      Hi Cia you can use white glue for the outer hull planking but it can take a while to go off or you can use super glue you can get different consistency super glue from model shops from a gel to a very runny consistency I used a medium type. wear thin surgical gloves if you don’t won’t to get it on your hands don’t use to much and if you do get it on the wood fine sand paper or acetone will remove it easily once dry.

    I'm thinking of using this ship as my first foray into wooden ship building, in large part because I get to practice planking the hull once before I put the final set of planking on. Would you recommend this as a first build? Will you be posting any other videos on the Polaris?

    • @martinfranklin9369leisuretime
      @martinfranklin9369leisuretime  3 года назад

      Hi Johnny the Artesania Latina HMS Endeavour’s Longboat is a smaller easier kit with double planking but the Polaris has better instructions and is a great kit if you have a reasonable level of skill with hand tools jump straight into the the Polaris.
      Unfortunately I didn’t get to finish the second planking or the kit as Polaris got knocked on the the floor and broke beyond repair so no new videos for now as building the Essex and have Palamos to build after that.But would like to get the kit again and build Polaris in the future.
