      Hello Olha! How are you? Its very very diferent! First of all you feel it diferent. Wood is organic so the feeling is very diferent! Then, its twice if not much of work but at the Same time you know that you are building something completly diferent! The more work you have the more pleased you get! Its very strange but gratifing! Thank you for your comment! Love your work! Stay safe and Merry Christmas

    I haven't tried soaking the planking, I use a plank bender. I do use a nail pusher, but my nails are finer than yours which makes it easier to push the nail all the way in. Your doing a great job and as always make enjoyable videos - thank you

    A tip I learned building custom aircraft cabinetry. When using contact cement for veneer, if you start with a primer coat (thinned contact cement, 60-75% applicable thinner), it gives the cement amazing bite to wood as it’s able to soak in a bit. It makes a huge difference in adhesion.

    I think you are doing a fantastic job for your first plank on plank wooden ship! I have been a fan of your videos for a long time and watch them while I do my little modeling, so enjoyable to watch and listen to, thank you. I have become stalled on my own wood ship model that I started over a year ago, lol. Just can't get the first planks down right, only have 4 runs on either side and the rest is a mystery for me. Watching you build your ship is having an effect on me, time to try the next run, I guess! Thanks so much for an honest build. You're doing great! Stay safe and Model on!!

    Hi again, a few more tips for you. I noticed that kit as pre-cut shaped parts (#46). They would be great for getting the general shape of the bulwarks you fitted earlier. Soak and clamp the bulwark parts to parts 46 and allow to dry, that would have then given you a good template for sanding the hull at that section, so you end up with a close match to the curve.
    Wooden ship building is about planning well ahead.
    Also, the work stand, next time, cut some thin strips of felt or sponge and line it, so when you are resting the nicely varnished hull on it, you don't chip or mark it during the rest of the build.

  • @dominicsibthorp6502
    @dominicsibthorp6502 2 года назад +1

    A little tip, it's backwards logic with planking. Yes, ideally you need to soak them in order to bend them, but don't fit them to the hull when wet. Wood absorbs water and swells,, so by fitting them wet, you run the risk of gaps appearing or even breaking the bonds as it dries and contracts.
    The safer way is to soak, fit into position and temp pin in place until they dry, and then glue them into position.

    • @AlexModeling
      @AlexModeling  2 года назад

      Thank you! Didn t knew that one! Valuable tip! Will use it next time! Thank you!

    Great job on the hull! In future you may want to drill a pilot hole at the end of a strip to keep it from splitting.

  • @chrisemsley7840
    @chrisemsley7840 2 года назад +1

    Helpful to drill a hole for the nail before pushing in on the end bits of the planks. Will stop the splitting. Also do you pre bend the planks to shape before laying? That way they'll lay ok. Good job so far though! Another question: Could you avoid hammering the nails down all the way so that once glued, the planks will hold allowing you to simply pull the nails and re use again in future. Then you don't have to worry about filing the nail heads down.

  • @Paraplax-gj3ls
    @Paraplax-gj3ls 2 года назад +1

    There’s a lot of way to planking the hull. First off it helps a lot with an electric plank bender, to heat the wood and make it curve before you attach it to the hull.
    If you’re painting the hull, it doesn’t need to look as nice, as you can use wood filler and sand paper before painting, so you can’t see anything. However, take the time to learn how to plank nicely as at some point, you’ll probably gonna do a ship that doesn’t has to be painted and just shows the woods natural colour. But as a first timer, paint is a good way to go, so you can build up the experience.
    Having the correct tools is half the job. :)
    Also, a friendly advice from a wood model ship builder to another, if you think you can do a better job at a certain point, with a piece, then do it. Otherwise it will haunt you and by then you can’t re do it.
    Keep it up.
