    Did you know that many airlines require their pilots to be beardless?
    The primary reason, therefore, is safety. In case of a rapid depressurization, pilots have to put on the quick donning mask. The seal between the mask and the pilot's face could be compromised if he wore a beard. Air could seep out between the beard and the mask!
    I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
    Wishing you all the best!

    This was one of the reasons you can't have a beard in the military, because they thought it would mess up your gas mask seal. It's been debunked though. Alot of times.

    • @AlexanderTheTiny
      @AlexanderTheTiny Год назад +79

      Given that i am in the military (Swedish), where beards are allowed, and have tested a mask while having a beard I will agree (though I would still shave if we new the enemy was using gas because I''m not taking any chances).
      But! The mask we see in the video is very different from the ones in the military and the pressure difference makes the seal more difficult. When breathing in in a military mask the pressure helps seal the mask, and when breathing out leaks aren't as much of a problem as the air is escaping, pushing away the outside air. The airline masks are pressurized meaning any leak would be catastrophic.

      This practice started in WW 1 where Gas Masks were not that sophisticated and the crude seal lining were unreliable unlike more modern masks being used nowadays with better rubber/latex seals and face conforming plastic body.
      One should remember before WW 1, long burly groomed beards and mustache were the fashion.
      This practice being extended to Airline Pilot is a byproduct of that practice. One should take into consideration that pilots not only wear the masks because of de-pressurizations but for possible gas leaks, toxic smoke from plane or terrorist attack with poison gas.
      Regular short beards are no problem with Modern masks as studies suggest, but what if the Pilot wanted to sport a "ZZ Top" kind of huge beard, should the company put into it’s regulation how long or what style of beard a pilot can grow. Should they have special ruler to measure pilots beard before each flight to see if it’s length go over the threshold. To much a hassle. Might as well make simple and just ban it. Simple. Plus, it makes the Pilots more professional looking to passengers.

      Oxygen tanks on plane are quite limited. So each amount counts since one doesn’t know how long the Pilot must wear it. I believe Pilots have tanks that last less than an hour or so. While passenger have only 15-20 minutes.
      I think I remember an Incident with an Air Egypt plane that crashed because all the Pilots suffered Asphyxia. A flight attendant tried to fly plane after seeing all the pilots down, but, he too later ran out Oxygen from his special emergency tank and succumbed too.

      I think it depends on the type of mask. The one responsible for respiratory protection at my fire brigade told me that depending how hard your beard is it can push away the seal creating a leak. Next problem is that apperently the sweat helps sealing the mask airtight, but a beard can catch the sweat also preventing a proper seal.
      A beard can also interfere with the proper function of the valves. There are som articles from dräger on this, but I dont know if there is an english version.

      That study only refer to people with a short beard (around 1 inch), but, what if the Pilot wanted to go all ZZ Tops or Father Moses type for his beard. Should the Airline then make a regulation on how long or what style a beard is allowed. Should the FAA make an Official Beard measuring tape to measure each pilots in every flight. Too much hassle.
      Plus, That also doesn’t also cover the security against Toxic fumes from fires or Poison Gas attack from terrorist. (You can see the Pilot’s mask has an Automatic Strap-on tightener and a full face/eye cover.) Even if the mask’s oxygen is over-pressured there is still a good chance of poison gas leaking into masks not fully sealed.
      So, to make it simple and more secure, just make the rules regarding facial hair as simple as it is.
