    (Article by Simple Flying)
    One of the most distinctive aspects of the new Airbus aircraft is the black ‘mask’ or visor around the windshield. Starting from the A350, new models like the A330neo and A321LR and beyond will all feature this. Here’s why Airbus aircraft have this unique design.
    While the windshield mask certainly looks striking and unique, the reason for having it is not just aesthetic. To understand the masking, we first have to understand the unique windshield design on new Airbus planes.
    According to Ruby, a Virgin Atlantic blog, the curved windshield design on these aircraft increases the overall aerodynamic efficiency of the planes. The A350 was the first Airbus aircraft to feature a curved cockpit glass, which allows the airflow to hug the surface of the glass with less turbulence, and thereby reduce drag.
    Additionally, the windows’ concave design along the nose of the aircraft gives pilots a better view of ground operations when at the airport. But what about the black masking around the windshield?
    The black masking on this new windshield serves a purpose too. According to Airbus,
    “The emblematic “sunglasses” like black windshield eases the window’s maintenance and contributes to harmonising the thermal condition of this temperature-sensitive window area.”
    Put simply, this means the black color adjusts better to the temperatures surrounding the aircraft. Planes routinely go through rapid temperature changes, taking off from hot airports in the cold atmosphere, and all parts must adjust to this change.
    The curved windshield and black “sunglasses” masking has continued from the A350 and found itself on all subsequent Airbus aircraft. The A330neo received the new design in 2017, clearly differentiating it from the older A330s. The first narrowbody aircraft to sport the new look was A321LR in 2018, cementing the new design as integral to the entire lineup.
    We also know that the upcoming A321XLR will also feature the black masking from renders of the aircraft. The decision means that nearly all Airbus planes made in the next decade with feature this striking design.
    Unique
    Modern aircraft all look fairly similar, only varying by the size of their fuselage (although here’s a guide to always know what plane you’re looking at). However, manufacturers always try to add something unique to their planes. Usually, it’s the wings and wingtips of the specific planes, but Airbus and Boeing both have other features too.
    New Boeing planes are instantly recognizable by the serrated engine covers on the 787 and 737 MAXs. Combined with the specific wing designs, spotting Boeing and Airbus planes has become quite easy now. However, it is sad to see the serrated covers won’t be returning on the 777X, putting their future in doubt.

    I‘ve recently read that „the black color helps to reduce maintenance costs. When replacing a cockpit panel, chipping is a common occurrence around the edges. These are easier to paint over with the universal black than if you have to find the airline's exact fuselage color every time. In addition, the border helps to compensate for temperature differences. This reduces the forces on the windows. Cracks are less likely to occur.“

    Living in Toulouse and having lots of relatives engineers at Airbus, myself being a pilot; it is widely believed even at Airbus that the reason why the a350 got his mask was because the new window shape was too ugly coming off the assembly line. Having a mask that hid the shape underneath made it better looking; some engineer found a plausible scientific reason why the mask got implemented (honestly ? They try to fix a non existing problem) and all A350s rolled out like that. The mask then got popular and Airbus decided to put it on all it’s new lineup.

      Yes you are correct. In terms of technology you can say they are direct competitors as they are the latest models (which are not a derivate of a previous one)
      But in terms of size and capacity, the A350 is larger than the 787

    Really great vid. Agree that most passengers won’t give any thought to the aircraft but I 100% care about what aircraft I am flying on, especially for long-haul flight. The improvement that, say, the Dreamliner brought to how much fresher I felt after a long flight is well worth seeking out. It defined which airline I flew and which flights I chose for any given trip.

    Still, it does make the A350 more recognizable to the general public. I always thought the A330 was the most bland looking thing on the airport (since I hardly ever see a 767 these days) as it had so little differentiating features in its looks. The 737 NG has the low engines with the flattened inlet and the 777 has the 6 wheeled trucks on its main gear, the gigantic engines and the 767 cockpit that looks too small for the diameter of the fuselage. If the A350 didn't have the black windshield frame, many people would hardly see the difference between an A350 and a 787. Airbus incidentally made the 787 more recognizable as well as their own.

    Thinking the calendar should be on everyone's MEL.

    • @paradox_joo9998
      @paradox_joo9998 2 года назад

      what is MEL?

    • @Eternal_Tech
      @Eternal_Tech 2 года назад

      @@paradox_joo9998 MEL stands for Minimum Equipment List, which specifies what things in an aircraft must be working in order to fly. Many aircraft are allowed to fly with some non-critical equipment not functioning, but certain critical parts must be working in order to be legally allowed to fly.

    The A350 competes with the 777 in terms of size. The largest 787 is still significantly smaller than the smallest A350 - they are not in direct competition actually.

    How bad is a hot window framed by cold metal? How much hotter is a black frame compared to a white frame at FL 360? My guess is the colour of the frame does not cause a significant improvement, at least not so much that it cannot be solved by any other conventional means such as more advanced insulation and sealing between the window and the frame. The black mask is just a marketing ploy, in my humble opinion. I do not agree with you on this one, dear Captain Joe.

    • @pizzablender
      @pizzablender 2 года назад +2

      Especially at night, the black will not heat up at all. And I wonder if it does heat up given all the airflow around it.
      Perhaps if it was insulating paint it could, but would be rather thick paint then.

  • @markusjuenemann
    @markusjuenemann 2 года назад +4

    So why didn't all other manufacturers start immediately to imitate the mask, if it is so critical? And even the other FLAT windows on the other Airbus planes get masks? They didn't need them for decades. So its obviously just an aesthetic thing by Airbus, nothing else.
