There is war in Iraq? Again? And the US and Iran are talking about working together? And who is this ISIS Terrorist group that is all over the news? And Religion? Oh dear... When exactly has the world gone mad again?
It is not possible to explain a complicated topic like this without simplification. We are very aware that this video is not painting a full picture of the situation. But we hope that it may lay the foundation on which you can try to do your own research and understand how horribly Fu**ed up the whole situation is.
We did have to produce the video super fast -- thanks a lot to our friends Martin Wackerbauer and Magnus Schlüter for helping us out -- we would not have been able to make this video in time without you guys!
Kurzgesagt loves all people as long as they don't hurt others and don't hinder mankind on its quest to the stars. So it was very sad to read so much terrible stuff about the situation in Iraq. Hopefully it will get better.

I'm sorry we had to simplify things so much but it was either this or no video at all - it was a real pain to select the stuff that was in the video and the information that had to be cut. If you want to check for yourself - one minute of animation is 900 characters (including blank ones). You have to write a script that is overall 3600 characters long that contains every aspect. It is just impossible without simplification. But lots of people have no idea at all and we wanted to make it simpler for them to get into the whole topic.
May I quote myself for a moment: "We are very aware that this video is not painting a full picture of the situation. But we hope that it may lay the foundation on which you can try to do your own research."
Oh and Armenia and Georgia are not muslim countries, but the vector map I used was not very exact and it kind of looks like that now - sorry for that! But then again, we love christians and muslims alike.
Don't worry the commenters will fill us in, correctly I hope. If the viewers really want to know more about this stuff, they will look it up.

Small correction: The goal of the US invasion wasn't to fight terrorism. They wanted to topple Saddam Hussein because he was moving away from the petro dollar and because he was making moves to nationalise the oil reserves of Iraq. In addition to that the United State wanted another US friendly regime besides Saudi Arabia and Israil in the region.

The nationalization of oil dates back to Law No. 80 of 1961, which was put in place by the leader Abdul Karim Qassim, and on February 7, 1963, he "passed the National Oil Company Law" and on February 8, 1963 he signed the National Oil Company law during the bombing of non-Iraqi aircraft! On his headquarters in the coup organized and led by the CIA !
And to do this George Washington fooled the American soldiers,wrecked havoc in Iraq,killed millions of Iraqis under the false pretext that sadaam Hossain was creating a "weapon of mass destruction"

The alternative was Operation Downfall, an invasion of Japan, which would have meant millions of casualties since Japan believed in never surrendering. The only reason so many people died was because of Japan, since the dropped papers detailing that a bomb was about to be dropped on them, and they completely ignored it. Then we bombed them and they still ignored it. Didn't care about their civilians at all. Only after the second one did they decide to surrender soon after. That's completely Japan's fault.

UmbraAsterism So basically you're saying that if the USA didn't supply countless amounts of dangerous weapons that they'd be killing each other anyway. Yeah, no. The USA is basically the only country/organization in the world that would give these people weapons at an affordable rate to them. They would not have them otherwise. The war on Iraq should have never happened. I followed it as it happened and trust me here are the events:
1-America lost so much of its resources in Afghanistan and was looking for a refund.
2- They basically looked at the map and said to each other "Here is a country full of oil and is not a friend of ours, let us find a reason to attack it".
3- They accused Iraq of having Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs).
4- The UN did not buy it and sent teams into Iraq to look for WMDs.
5- The UN's report was clear "No Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq".
6- US troops were already in the gulf ready to attack, and one day after the report was published, the US ignored it and attacked.
7-They were faced with strong defenses up until they reached Baghdad, once they arrived at baghdad 2 weeks after entering Iraq, Baghdad fell in a matter of hours.
8- Iraqis knew the reason behind the US attacks and they decided to burn the oil factories and refineries. The US then sent in private contractors to fix the refineries and ship the oil back to the US.
9- They could not leave Iraq because they had to secure their oil as it flows so they stirred up some problems between the two muslim factions to give the world a reason why they should stay.
10- Finally, the war on Iraq has proven to be a failure due to the fact that the costs were higher than the profits.
Most of that is just false. The US imported more oil from Iraq BEFORE the invasion, and at cheaper prices too. The US also supported sanctions on Iraq (including oil, of course) after Saddam invaded Kuwait, and lead the investigations on the countries who had violated the agreed sanctions (France and Russia for examples). If all the US wanted was Iraqi oil, why would we stop Iraq from being able to export their oil anywhere? If the US was only in Iraq for the oil, why did we support the decision to give control and ownership of it's oil back to the Iraqi government in 2010, when we could have kept a stranglehold of it? In fact, the largest benefitters of a stable Iraq (in terms of oil drilling contracts) has not been the US (by a long shot), but China and Russia. If oil was our goal, why would we let that happen?
Also, your claim that the US created the conflict between the Sunnis and Shia Muslims is ridiculous. As this video states, the conflict and rotation of oppressors becoming the oppressed and back again has been going on long before the US came into the picture in 2003.
Also, WMD's were found in Iraq... so there's that.

Sean Simpson I'm pretty sure Truman and the US wanted to be more lenient towards Germany, but the European powers who were also negotiating wanted the harsh punishments, so the US was unable to accomplish the "peace without victory" that Truman wanted. Totally agree that it only caused more problems though.
