      This is extremely urgrent!! Everyone needs to look at my video that I have uploaded about dark matter!! You might think this is a joke but I am a very spiritual person who has gone through a lot of trauma and I stumbled upon what dark matter is about 2-3 weeks ago and I don't know what to do about it. I am being completely serious. When you find out what it is, it is actually so beautiful that it makes you cry tears of joy and smile at the same time. I need help because I dont know exactly what to do about this or even if I want to or should tell the rest of the population what dark matter and dark energy and black holes are, however I feel like it could also be my break in life... I would just like to reiterate that this is not a joke, anyone reading this needs to look at my video please.. thank you!

    I’m a junior in high school, and am currently doing a lot of college tours. Physics is an interesting field and my current first choice for major. This spring break, I have the chance to meet with a world leading professor/researcher in the field of dark matter. I’m super excited and am trying to watch more videos on the concept itself in order to be better prepared. This was super interesting and helpful! Thanks!

      okay update. It was really cool. I got a run down of the subject since all I knew was what this video told me. I got to check out some really cool technology being made to sense these dark matter particles (which is his specific field of study - discovering a way to detect the particles) and even check out some of the labs. It was a super cool experience, and in the end I met with another lady to discuss the career plan and class scheduling for college if physics was my major, which i’m currently planning on it to be.

I did not choose Physics as a major back in the day because I wasn’t good with math but with RUclips existing and the lectures they have I’ve realized it’s not just about the math. Physics is in a way very philosophical. Einstein himself wasn’t good at math. And so I would’ve chosen the major now. Good luck it’s an infamously hard major and a lot of math but don’t get stuck on just the maths. As you see there’s so much still unanswered and we require creative minds that literally can think beyond the classical understanding of our reality to lead us to new findings in physics!

      Do you know what a lightyear is? A light year is the distance it takes for light(the speed of light) to travel an entire year. If someone is going the speed of light, would take them an entire year to travel a lightyear. Did you know, there are places are SO far away, it is literally impossible to observe them because they're light hasn't reached us yet? In the whole existence of our universe, there are places that are SO far away, that the light from the other side hasn't reached us yet. it is been more than sextillions of centuries, and at the speed of light, it has taken it this long and it's light still hasn't reached us. If that makes any sense. The things we CAN observe is called the "Observable Universe", and anything past it is completely unavailable to us because the light past it hasn't reached us yet. Crazy right? So everything we think we know about space and the universe is only a TINY fraction of what there actually is. WAY less then 5%. More like .000000000001% is what we know, compared the the size and complexity of reality. But if you think about it this way, there could be aliens on the other side just like us, wondering if they're alone in the universe, just like us, trying to grasp at any information and learn, just like us. Advancing to try and keep going, just like us. But we'll never be able to meet any of these aliens because they're so far away, and not even light can reach them.

    Been reading some quantum physics books. Penrose put out this concept of collapsing/variable wave functions of particles in relation to their distance with mass and gravity. Made me think. Perhaps Space time itself as a medium has a “resolution” that becomes more defined as mass increases. So as you approach areas of mass like a galaxy, space time becomes more constrained. As light pours into empty space without any resolution outside the galaxy, it expands space as its wave function increases to a higher probability.

      The originals are obviously drafted in English. Even though the operators are Germans their videos on their German channel are only translated. It makes sense since the German RUclips community is, as far as I know, the second largest after the English one and many Germans like to see videos in their motherlanguage - especially when it comes to science it is less confusing. Also Germans who are not good at the English language can have a chat about the videos. Even though the German translation lacks of neutrality especially on political topics being more leftist I appriciate this step.

It would explain why the universe would be speeding up in its expansion as well, Which defies Physics and mathematics, But would make sense if the universe was created for us to live in it forever. That would be a question for when or if we can work out or observe the properties of dark matter, as it would probably be something completely different from matter. The name comes from the fact that it appears to be immeasurable matter. This is all of course presuming it exists.

    • @reyarinnepykefyre8707

    • @mattlitton1255
      @mattlitton1255 6 лет назад +4

      Riding off of this idea, if there were some type of 'anti-darkmatter' could collisions between it and darkmatter be responsible for the creation of dark energy. I mean we know there is a vastly larger amount of dark energy than there is normal energy, likewise it would seem reasonable to me that there would be much more theoretical collision between anti-darkmatter and darkmatter, possibly being responsible for the large amounts of dark energy we observe.
      Of course its all lose talk but its fun to think about

I'm no expert in theoretical physics. :)

  • @jeddyhi
    @jeddyhi 3 года назад +72

    This is how I got a grip in what dark matter actually means. From another video on youtube but cannot remember the name of it. Gravity is key. The video showed an example of our solar system and how gravity effects the motion of the planets. Planets closer to the Sun travel around the Sun faster than planets further away from the Sun because further away gravity is weaker. So when they examined galaxies and studied galaxy rotation, they expected to see the same, i.e.; stars closer to the galactic center traveling faster than stars out on the edge where gravity would be weaker. But they saw something different. Stars far from the center of galaxies were traveling as fast as stars near the center. Like an Album turning on a turntable. The outside edge has the same speed as the center edge. There simply was not enough matter in a galaxy to cause this. So they came up with dark matter, stuff we can't see or detect but we know it is there because we see it's effects.

    This video was so good until you ruined it with the "It's just a theory" thing. You mean hypothesis. In science, theories are working models, with fact and evidence behind them. Gravity is a theory.... by saying "just a theory" you discount science as a whole, and give creationists a reason to spout "evolution is just a theory!"
    Ugh, please be careful with this.

    • @OppaiAI
      @OppaiAI 9 лет назад +46

      FNHot But it is just a theory, like superstring theory is a theory. Dark matter and energy are both theoretical models based on observations or calculations, but not fully understood or proven. And they are not the same like for example the hollow earth hypothesis.

      This goes to +theoverdark too. And just so you know, there are religious people that believe in evolution. What I'd like to see is more discussion into the possibility -- however small it presumably is -- that dark matter and dark energy just reflect another "ether" solution to the unexplained results. While dark matter and dark energy certainly are not impossible and possibly even likely, I feel like there just isn't enough searching into alternate explanations where it's accepted that there could be small flaws in the current models or even something else entirely going on. I like that this video at least made a small concession that the possibility exists, but even it barely touches on the idea.

So in reality instead of having something extra we are trying to descrive it's just something missing which needs to add some entropy to explain possible energy resulted from motion that is actually spacetime itself pushing things apart. Maybe it shouldn't be called "Dark" nor "Matter" nor "Energy" and instead "blank space" in my opinion (and the opinion of thousands of people thinking hard about this)

      Finally someone who starts to think. But it kind of becomes a bit of a stretch to still call it gravity, since it would have to be so much different to gravity.
      Dark matter didn't come up as an explanation. It is a way to safeguard the scientific community from having to question the fundamental assumptions about how gravity defines the mechanism of the universe.
      We proved that gravity as we know it couldn't be the cause for galaxy formation back in the days. This was since we didn't find any evidence of 85% of the matter that these gravity models demanded. This was when the scientific method demanded a questioning of the models and hypotheses them selves. But that was far from what the scientists did. Instead they pretended that the evidence was there, but for an unknown reason we couldn't observe it.
      To question the gravity model is what you are doing. But for a person who have ben taught that it is right most of his/her life the cognitive dissonance would be very much for real. This is why dark matter exists.
      If we would face the fact that dark matter is not scientific to start with then we would have to question the entire standard model.

      Maybe dark matter is not really a matter. It might be a phenomena in which it is the result of mass warping the space-time thus transferring the load into other space(dark matter) making it seemingly hyper vacuum. Causing it to push away matters towards another matter(in which this matter causes the huge warp) instead of pulling it in like gravity. So it is nothing and it interacts with gravity inversely.

    What I personally think dark energy is, is that it actually might be the last form of energy. The purest form of it. When everything, including photons, have finally decayed, there is only dark energy. Energy that is free of every form of it's bindings (bindings like matter, dark matter and radiation). Is it also possible that dark energy has it's maximum density so the universe stops expanding at some point? Does it have any kind of density or is the size of the universe just affected by matter and dark matter and when they have decayed enough, universe starts shrinking to a single point until it explodes again forming a new universe?

    Guys, I have one BIG favor to ask. PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE, use the words THEORY and HYPOTHESIS correctly. We DON"T have theories about dark matter or energy. we HAVE hypotheses. In science the word theory means something very different than in our daily lives. Commonly, we call something a theory, when it is just made up and nobody knows whether it is true or not. In science, that is called a hypothesis. In science a Theory is when a hypothesis has been tested and tested and scrutinised and there have been predictions made according to that hypothesis and it all checks out and it does explain the observed facts well. That means, in science a theory is something we accept as truth. That's why there is the theory of gravitation. Nobody says that it doesn't exist or work because it's a theory, because the theory is proven numerous times and we know it works. Same goes for Evolution (although many people still use the stupid "it's just a theory" argument, because they don't understand the distinction I am explaining now).
    So again, please use these terms correctly. You have misused the terms in several of your videos and your and other people's misuse of these two terms are what is fueling the whole "it's just a theory" misunderstanding. You are educating people with these videos. Please educate them properly by using these terms properly. Thank you.

      Olaf Van der Veen No, that is a very bad way to look at it. You have essentially said: "you are telling them wrong information. But it's fine, because people think this wrong information is true, so let's continue giving them wrong information, rather than confuse them with the truth." There is no scenario ever in the world, where this thinking is acceptable.

    • @olafvanderveen629

      But the information is not untrue or wrong, there is just a difference between informal and formal use. Also, I think it would be great if he made a video about this. But until he does, he will have to present it in a way that everyone understands.

      Stephen Hawking has theorized in the zero-energy universe, which is based on the idea of the law of energy conservation, that the total of all energy in the universe equals to zero. What he gives as an example is a person wanting to turn a flat piece of land into a hill by digging earth/dirt out of a hole. The hill in its totality represents positive energy or matter, the hole being the inverse or negative version in volume of the hill represents negative energy or space. Hawking theorized that negative energy may be gravity which increases negatively in proportion to the amount of mass of positive energy or matter, the heavier something is the more gravity it produces.
      But I personally have a different idea.
      Current astrophysicists theorize that there is a substance called dark energy, which is said to be a repulsive force, that is increasing the expansion of the universe. They also have a theory of dark matter, or matter that is invisible and acts a binding agent or gravity to keep galaxies from falling apart. There is also the postulation, or idea, of most of the volume of an atom or particle being empty space, and this reminds me of the idea that only 5 percent of the universe is meant to have ordinary matter, the next 23 or so percent being dark matter, and the rest being dark energy.
      Now I theorize that given the ratio of matter to space in a particle or atom, it seems awfully similar with the idea of most of the majority of the universe being dark substances. Now if Hawking is correct that space is negative energy and negative energy allows gravity, how can we reconcile these opposing theories?
      Well what if space, negative energy, was dark energy and dark matter?
      If space is expanding, then space fits with dark energy being a repulsive force, but I don’t believe all the negative energy is repulsing in only one direction. Dark energy surrounds galaxies, and thus in expanding outwards, would also press upon galaxies and thus physical objects like matter or positive energy, this pressure leading to a multiplied or ‘dense’ although ‘dense’ is not really the right word, but an increased or maximized form of dark energy compression, which could behave like a congealed form of dark energy, and thus be mistaken to be dark matter.
      This repulsive force or dark energy upon these physical objects of positive energy would thus become the force of gravity. The maximized negative energy would increase the repulsive force, and thus increase the force but decreasing the pressure (as there is no physical matter) against the physical matter object, and this could be what we feel as gravity. The multiplying decrease of pressure being negative energy, would thus feel less the further away from the postive energy object, but would increase the closer you came to the physical positive energy object, which causes the increase of gravity and thus creates acceleration of nearby objects towards the positive energy matter.
      I also theorize that since space is within an atom or a particle for that matter, the fact that this space is negative energy or dark energy may explain something. What if the particle was basically a type of positive energy matter force-field around a body of negative energy. The negative energy or space pushes the positive energy/matter outwards so it doesn’t collapse from outside pressing negative energy or dark energy into a singularity, and thus causing that matter to collapse into a miniature black hole or something similar. The fact that the particle remains in a spherical shape is because the positive energy is pushed back and forth between the external dark energy and the internal dark energy, which is why a particle resembles a sphere when observed in a scanning tunnelling electron microscope.
      But isn’t a particle also a wave? How does that work into this theory?
      The equal force from the internal dark energy and the equal force from external dark energy makes the positive energy matter become the spherical shape, but if this particle was say in a more dense or less strong surrounding dark energy, the particle could expand and spread into a field flowing in all directions until reaching the force of dark energy, thus becoming a wave of probability. I believe that when this wave is disturbed by either increased dark energy forces or that enacting upon a nearby positive energy matter body, or is observed the wave can then collapse into a particle. Because the wave is spreading everywhere, the collapse of the wavefunction would appear to be random, and thus be made out of a field of uncertainty, but to me its like recording old analog TV static on a VCR and then hitting pause, trying to position where that next piece of static will be. It happens so fast and there are so many probabilities affecting it that it appears random.
      Now I want to talk about another topic that may be related: String theory and M-theory.
      Superstring theory theorizes (hence the name) that particles are made out of small slithers of waving positive energy/matter string. Now strings can appear as single strands like a piece of string, or can appear as a loop of string. Now according to M-theory built upon superstring theory strings can expand into sheets called membranes or branes for short, which to me could form into physical shapes, like perhaps a sphere. It has also been suggested in particle-wave duality that all matter or positive energy is made of vibrations. Now just as particles can expand into waves, I see a correlation between the string and the particle, and the membrane as a wave, call it a string/particle-membrane/wave duality or string-membrane duality. The particle is simply the membrane of a string spread evenly around the negative energy thus forming the matter/positive energy force-field. They say that strings vibrating in different ways can create different particles.
      Now here’s where something else comes in: The Higgs Boson.
      The Higgs Boson is the particle of the Higgs Field which creates mass of particles. Remember when a motorboat would travel through a large lake or sea and there would be drag created by say a skiier holding onto a rope connected to the boat? Well I believe that as particles move through this Higgs Field, they create a drag which causes the appearance of mass. Now there have been detected two particles of the same size but each with very different masses. Now how can this be? Well there would be a reason for the particle to drag through the Higgs Field, and this is energy density. Suppose the string or vibration that made up the same size but incredibly light particle was a very long extended vibration, like say the frequency of a radio wave. The same size but incredibly heavier particle would have a very high narrow vibration, like say the frequency of a gamma ray. The increase in frequency leads to an increase in energy density, and how that particle’s charge through relation with the photon, and spin with the Higgs Field and dark energy, leads to the different interactions of various particles. It’s all the same positive energy, just different packets of it with different frequencies and different sizes.
      Now the collapse of these waves into particles to me also has another application. If you don’t know, there is an intense debate between trying to link quantum mechanics (which is how particles interact and behave as bits of energy) and general relativity (which is about how gravity affects large objects like moons, planets, stars and galaxies).
      Now quantum mechanics says that when a wave is being observed, it collapses into a particular spot and hence becomes a particle. Now General Relativity says that objects with mass or postive energy, basically, warp the space and time (as time is also a measure of distance and distance a measure of the time taken to cross that distance) thus causing nearby objects to fall into the warp of space time and thus become attracted to the physical matter object. What if this wave affected by dark energy or a nearby mass of positive energy, was the same as the positive energy or planet or physical object affecting the negative energy containing the space time? Thus this would link the effect of General Relativity warping space time (what I call macro negative energy mixed with the Higgs Field), the same time how space time and Higgs Field and negative energy (micro negative energy and Higgs Field) causes the collapse of wavefunctions into particles?
      Thus this would link General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics regarding the Collapse of the Wavefunction, the former being simply a larger version of the latter, one happening on a macro scale, the other on a micro scale.
      I hope that explains things, and I hope it has helped you answer those questions.
      Now if I’m wrong or right, please let me know. I’d like to know. Peace.
