For those who don't know the video. Remember, Matter cannot be destroyed nor created.

Important note; scientific theory is not the same as word theory in regular speech. Use words and definition correctly. Dark matter is a hypothetical form of matter not theoretical one.

I’m a junior in high school, and am currently doing a lot of college tours. Physics is an interesting field and my current first choice for major. This spring break, I have the chance to meet with a world leading professor/researcher in the field of dark matter. I’m super excited and am trying to watch more videos on the concept itself in order to be better prepared. This was super interesting and helpful! Thanks!
Update: I’m now going into my college freshman year as a physics and math major and i’m super excited!
That's amazing! good luck
okay update. It was really cool. I got a run down of the subject since all I knew was what this video told me. I got to check out some really cool technology being made to sense these dark matter particles (which is his specific field of study - discovering a way to detect the particles) and even check out some of the labs. It was a super cool experience, and in the end I met with another lady to discuss the career plan and class scheduling for college if physics was my major, which i’m currently planning on it to be.
@@kellyy8735 super excited for you. I can barely wrap my mind around physics but it’s fascinating.
@@kellyy8735that’s amazing you had an experience some dream to have! (Like myself). I did not choose Physics as a major back in the day because I wasn’t good with math but with RUclips existing and the lectures they have I’ve realized it’s not just about the math. Physics is in a way very philosophical. Einstein himself wasn’t good at math. And so I would’ve chosen the major now. Good luck it’s an infamously hard major and a lot of math but don’t get stuck on just the maths. As you see there’s so much still unanswered and we require creative minds that literally can think beyond the classical understanding of our reality to lead us to new findings in physics!
how did you go about scheduling that meeting?? it sounds super interesting
(meanwhile, in 2567) Wow, I can't believe no one had figured out dark energy back in the early millennium. That shit's so simple, we teach it at primary school!
Yeah eventually we'll harness dark energy and then shit will really start kicking off.
Nak and by shit, you men we rip our universe apart the moment we turn on the dark energy collector :P
Ricardo Fuertes Worth it. We'll power some heavyweight technology with that dark energy.
Nak um....nope. For decades, we've had the ability to harness the background radiation left over from the big bang....and it's kept away from the commercial market. There's just too much money and control in selling consumable resources.
ExistentialOcto Too bad there won't be 2567. Humanity will probably destroy itself by then :((
Imagine the things Einstein could do with today's technology.
+Wzardsarecool sadly einstein (at the time) refused the theory that explain quantum mechanichs, claiming that 'God does not play dice with the universe" referring to the random factor built in the quantum mechanics and spent part of his life triyng to solve more misteryes of the universe while ignoring it.
sadly (for einstein, and a little for us trough empathy) today is has ben proved that quantum mechanics is a fact
this means sir. Albert "PROBABLY" spent a lot of his limited time alive triyng to solve a problem while turning a blind eye for a directly impactfull cientific discovery. imagine i fe had embraced it, what would his genious mind come up with. mabye nothing, mabye many more.
(i used the word "PROBABLY" this way enforcing the idea that for that example: Newton thought he had the universe figured out, and for decades all other cientists thought too, until Einstein proved them wrong)
its astonishing and unmesurable the beauty of human discovery
i hope i made a nice contribution to your day and ideas. sorry for my bad english
+Wzardsarecool Einstein is not as much of a genius as you think he is. Sure he can probably release papers going into further depth regarding quantum mechanics but he won't be able to dramatically cause magic to happen.
Real breakthrough occurs from humans working together.
+Mr B you're damned if you think Einstein wasn't a genius, that guy is the God of all science. Period

Do you know what a lightyear is? A light year is the distance it takes for light(the speed of light) to travel an entire year. If someone is going the speed of light, would take them an entire year to travel a lightyear. Did you know, there are places are SO far away, it is literally impossible to observe them because they're light hasn't reached us yet? In the whole existence of our universe, there are places that are SO far away, that the light from the other side hasn't reached us yet. it is been more than sextillions of centuries, and at the speed of light, it has taken it this long and it's light still hasn't reached us. If that makes any sense. The things we CAN observe is called the "Observable Universe", and anything past it is completely unavailable to us because the light past it hasn't reached us yet. Crazy right? So everything we think we know about space and the universe is only a TINY fraction of what there actually is. WAY less then 5%. More like .000000000001% is what we know, compared the the size and complexity of reality. But if you think about it this way, there could be aliens on the other side just like us, wondering if they're alone in the universe, just like us, trying to grasp at any information and learn, just like us. Advancing to try and keep going, just like us. But we'll never be able to meet any of these aliens because they're so far away, and not even light can reach them.

Truly as close to the power of gods we might have found yet!
Maybe dark matter is the Force. According to Obi Wan, the Force surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together.
Dark energy expand
Dark Matter bind galaxies
Personally I think your actually correct. What if dark energy is actually Gods active force? If the universe was created by an intelligent mind, than that would explain why there isn’t an equal amount of Anti-matter in the universe, Which is mathematically what should be the case if the big bang was an accident. It would explain why the universe would be speeding up in its expansion as well, Which defies Physics and mathematics, But would make sense if the universe was created for us to live in it forever. Maybe were just at the footsteps of being allowed to expand into the universe itself as a species.

The originals are obviously drafted in English. Even though the operators are Germans their videos on their German channel are only translated. It makes sense since the German RUclips community is, as far as I know, the second largest after the English one and many Germans like to see videos in their motherlanguage - especially when it comes to science it is less confusing. Also Germans who are not good at the English language can have a chat about the videos. Even though the German translation lacks of neutrality especially on political topics being more leftist I appriciate this step.

God is Darkmatter.
Been reading some quantum physics books. Penrose put out this concept of collapsing/variable wave functions of particles in relation to their distance with mass and gravity. Made me think. Perhaps Space time itself as a medium has a “resolution” that becomes more defined as mass increases. So as you approach areas of mass like a galaxy, space time becomes more constrained. As light pours into empty space without any resolution outside the galaxy, it expands space as its wave function increases to a higher probability.
But that would only explain stars or galaxies emitting light

It scares me that me that everything we’ve ever known and understood about the universe is only a tiny fraction of everything. We have no idea what 95% of the universe looks like!
@Spider Bloke science teachers are the very worst of science. If you’re acting like you know everything you’re a bad scientist. Science is all about knowing nothing
Yeah, its pretty scary, and 95% to me is a huge exaggeration. In the whole existence of out universe, there are places that are SO far away, that the light from the other side hasn't reached us yet. it is been more than sextillions of centuries, and at the speed of light, it has taken it this long and it's light still hasn't reached us.
There are 10 Dimensions and if there is a 10 Dimensional beiing in existence then we are not able to see it !!!
@@cameronestrada1430 for that reason we are making hubble 2 which will be able to see beyond the current observable universe, but yes we can never observe the edge of the universe since its velocity is extremely extreme than the speed of light, and so light would take infinite time to reach us since new space is constantly generated with more than speed of light, also even if we see beyond the observable universe we would be seeing in past and so we cant be sure that the things we see there still exist

magicmisteur What does electricity taste like then? Feel is a totally different sense.
I love how Kurzgesagt’s channel theme changed over the years !
This is how I got a grip in what dark matter actually means. From another video on youtube but cannot remember the name of it. Gravity is key. The video showed an example of our solar system and how gravity effects the motion of the planets. Planets closer to the Sun travel around the Sun faster than planets further away from the Sun because further away gravity is weaker. So when they examined galaxies and studied galaxy rotation, they expected to see the same, i.e.; stars closer to the galactic center traveling faster than stars out on the edge where gravity would be weaker. But they saw something different. Stars far from the center of galaxies were traveling as fast as stars near the center. Like an Album turning on a turntable. The outside edge has the same speed as the center edge. There simply was not enough matter in a galaxy to cause this. So they came up with dark matter, stuff we can't see or detect but we know it is there because we see it's effects.
Sounds like you're saying that dark matter is the glue that binds the whole universe together as One
@@qbconnect2883 Pretty much yea... Without dark and more complex energy... there would be no world and the whole cosmos would basically cease to exist... Dark Matter makes up approximately 99.999999999999999999% of the entire universe and just overall galaxy itself. So yes, it is what binds the universe together. From all the science videos I've ever watched, I realize the further you zoom into something you realize it's made up something even smaller which is scary for me because what this insinuates is that we're all just the blurry outline of nothing.

@@xenny1061 Just like no one can find dark matter? FTL is impossible both theoretically and practically but theories do change.
@@someguy4853 so, does that mean space expand with greater speed than the speed of light?
Now I'm just wondering if Dark Matter and/or Energy could be used to fight Entropy.
How
I like that idea
Laws are made to be broken
Only if there is a possibility to convert Dark Energy, into Dark Matter or even better normal Matter.
at least is the first thing that makes me think entropy has a weak spot
What I'd like to see is more discussion into the possibility -- however small it presumably is -- that dark matter and dark energy just reflect another "ether" solution to the unexplained results. While dark matter and dark energy certainly are not impossible and possibly even likely, I feel like there just isn't enough searching into alternate explanations where it's accepted that there could be small flaws in the current models or even something else entirely going on. I like that this video at least made a small concession that the possibility exists, but even it barely touches on the idea.
Yes. It feels like there has been a giant failure of imagination within the scientific hivemind
@@finwefingolfin7113 However, while that flaw was 'supposedly' discovered. If u fully look into what dark matter and dark energy actually are. U find it's more impressive than u may think. Like he said in the video of Einstein's theory. Cosmological constant which is the polar and complete opposite of what the gravitational quantum force itself is. Therefore, the 'supposed failure' turned out to be just another hive that just lurks beneath someone's mind.
A long time ago, people imagined that the sky and space, are like a sea, and all that "black water" is called ether.🤪
There is a lot of serious research into MOND (modified newtonian dynamics) which tries to explain the observed weirdness of galaxies without the dm/de.
However the DM/DE is the more mainstream. MOND is more niche.
@@Posiman unless you actually get black matter, it would always be just a theory!
Such a good video!
Made a difficult topic so easy to understand. Brilliant!
If there is matter, antimatter and dark matter, could there be anti-darkmatter?
That would be a question for when or if we can work out or observe the properties of dark matter, as it would probably be something completely different from matter. The name comes from the fact that it appears to be immeasurable matter. This is all of course presuming it exists.
Gravity is pretty the opposite force of dark energy, therefore anti-dark matter could be the also hypothetical particle called graviton.
Riding off of this idea, if there were some type of 'anti-darkmatter' could collisions between it and darkmatter be responsible for the creation of dark energy. I mean we know there is a vastly larger amount of dark energy than there is normal energy, likewise it would seem reasonable to me that there would be much more theoretical collision between anti-darkmatter and darkmatter, possibly being responsible for the large amounts of dark energy we observe.
Of course its all lose talk but its fun to think about
Fook
mirilion79 I was just thinking that maybe our universe is actually part of a multiverse where matter from one universe affects another. Like, maybe dark matter is just us observing matter from another universe. We can't actually see it but we can see how it bends spacetime in the opposite way. Just a thought. I'm no expert in theoretical physics. :)
One thing that I wish people would mention when discussing dark matter - and you did kinda mention it with dark energy - is that it's very possible that the General Relativity model of astrophysics is just wrong. There's something inherent in physics that makes galaxies form that it doesn't account for.
That's basically what General Relativity did to Newton. It took us a good 250-300 years for someone to figure out what's missing from Newtonian physics...just because we haven't found out what's wrong with Einstein's theory doesn't mean it's perfect. Just means that it's really close to being accurate under most circumstances.
Something you mentioned about dark energy goes along these lines - that it's a hitherto unrecognized property of space that causes it to expand, not simply energy that is present in some nebulous and seemingly impossible way.
(It's a problem I noticed a fair bit in university; even the smartest people are taught to not question these landmark theories. Our understanding of physics is incomplete, which basically means that all of our theories are technically wrong, they're just increasingly close to being right, and are right enough that we can use them in many circumstances. It's dumb to just accept any scientific theory as correct until we somehow develop one that explains everything we observe. Which is probably not going to be any time soon.)
This is false. Einstein rings also prove the existence of dark matter.
rashkavar couldn't agree more.
exactly! I remember this one story about an Egyptian astronomer who calculated exactly the movements of the sun - assuming that the sun revolved around the earth. His calculations were complicated but so correct that they could be used precisely for hundreds of years! Maybe that is the case with modern physics.

If we were able to contain dark matter we could theoretically travel to the future

1:35 - There is an error. You say "We know what DARK ENERGY is not..." but I think you meant to say Dark Matter. No worries, but you should put an annotation to recognise the error.
That did sound kinda weird yes
But then the first part of the sentence wouldn't make sense. As he says there are more theories to what dark matter is than what it isn't. And then he also says why these theories are wrong.
Fabian Neundorf I think you're mistaken, he says "Right now, we have more ideas about what DARK ENERGY is not, than what it is". He then goes on to say what Dark MATTER is not. He meant to say "Right now, we have more ideas about what Dark Matter is not, than what it is".
He says we know more about what Dark matter is not, rather than what it is.
Ollie Maddox ah misunderstood. I thought you were confused by the "not". Didn't actually hear him saying dark energy and thought he said dark matter.
Ollie Maddox I think he said it right... Because we don't know what dark matter is, so we can only explain what it is not hence kind of, explaining it.. It's kind of a paradox. but it works to explain such things.
"It surrounds us, and binds us..."
"We don't know much other than it exists."

Can you do a video on the 4th dimension?
João Gabriel there is more to it than just that. Einstein argued that it wasn't time and I think what you said was really vague
19 Manjeets Gabriel's Darkness 19 Manjeets - there are more than one theories than time is the 4th dimension , ofcourse its one of the ways , but what people usually percieve 4d is as a spacial dimension, basically if you live in 2d you see in 1d , if you live in 3d you see everything in 2d , it makes sense coz we only see everything as a flat 2d image and surface , so in 4d youll see all sides of say a cube youll also see whats inside a cube , 4 - 1d lines make a 2d square , 6 - 2d sqaures make a 3d cube , 8 - 3d cubes make a 4d Tesseract .
