I’m super excited and am trying to watch more videos on the concept itself in order to be better prepared. This was super interesting and helpful! Thanks!

I got to check out some really cool technology being made to sense these dark matter particles (which is his specific field of study - discovering a way to detect the particles) and even check out some of the labs. It was a super cool experience, and in the end I met with another lady to discuss the career plan and class scheduling for college if physics was my major, which i’m currently planning on it to be.

Physics is in a way very philosophical. Einstein himself wasn’t good at math. And so I would’ve chosen the major now. Good luck it’s an infamously hard major and a lot of math but don’t get stuck on just the maths. sadly (for einstein, and a little for us trough empathy) today is has ben proved that quantum mechanics is a fact

      (i used the word "PROBABLY" this way enforcing the idea that for that example: Newton thought he had the universe figured out, and for decades all other cientists thought too, until Einstein proved them wrong)

      Do you know what a lightyear is? A light year is the distance it takes for light(the speed of light) to travel an entire year. If someone is going the speed of light, would take them an entire year to travel a lightyear. Did you know, there are places are SO far away, it is literally impossible to observe them because they're light hasn't reached us yet? In the whole existence of our universe, there are places that are SO far away, that the light from the other side hasn't reached us yet. it is been more than sextillions of centuries, and at the speed of light, it has taken it this long and it's light still hasn't reached us. If that makes any sense. The things we CAN observe is called the "Observable Universe", and anything past it is completely unavailable to us because the light past it hasn't reached us yet. Crazy right? So everything we think we know about space and the universe is only a TINY fraction of what there actually is. WAY less then 5%. More like .000000000001% is what we know, compared the the size and complexity of reality. But if you think about it this way, there could be aliens on the other side just like us, wondering if they're alone in the universe, just like us, trying to grasp at any information and learn, just like us. Advancing to try and keep going, just like us. But we'll never be able to meet any of these aliens because they're so far away, and not even light can reach them.

If the universe was created by an intelligent mind, than that would explain why there isn’t an equal amount of Anti-matter in the universe, Which is mathematically what should be the case if the big bang was an accident. It would explain why the universe would be speeding up in its expansion as well, Which defies Physics and mathematics, But would make sense if the universe was created for us to live in it forever. Maybe were just at the footsteps of being allowed to expand into the universe itself as a species.

      Vantor Die Originale werden offensichtlich auf English verfasst. Auch wenn die Betreiber Deutsche sind werden die Videos auf dem deutschen Kanal lediglich übersetzt. Die deutschsprachige RUclips-Gemeinschaft ist soweit ich weiß nach der englischen die zweitgrößte und vor allem wenn es um Wissenschaft geht ist es für viele deutsche Angenehmer und weniger verwirrend die Videos auf Deutsch zu sehen. Auch wenn sich die deutsche Übersetzung im Grundtonus leider underscheidet (vor allem wenn es um politische Themen geht von relativ neutral zu etwas linker) begrüße ich den deutschen Kanal. So können selbst die Deutschen, die Sprachfaul sind mitreden.
      The originals are obviously drafted in English. Even though the operators are Germans their videos on their German channel are only translated. It makes sense since the German RUclips community is, as far as I know, the second largest after the English one and many Germans like to see videos in their motherlanguage - especially when it comes to science it is less confusing. Also Germans who are not good at the English language can have a chat about the videos. Even though the German translation lacks of neutrality especially on political topics being more leftist I appriciate this step.

    Been reading some quantum physics books. Penrose put out this concept of collapsing/variable wave functions of particles in relation to their distance with mass and gravity. Made me think. Perhaps Space time itself as a medium has a “resolution” that becomes more defined as mass increases. So as you approach areas of mass like a galaxy, space time becomes more constrained. As light pours into empty space without any resolution outside the galaxy, it expands space as its wave function increases to a higher probability.

      @cameronestrada1430 4 года назад +29

      Yeah, its pretty scary, and 95% to me is a huge exaggeration. In the whole existence of out universe, there are places that are SO far away, that the light from the other side hasn't reached us yet. it is been more than sextillions of centuries, and at the speed of light, it has taken it this long and it's light still hasn't reached us.

    This is how I got a grip in what dark matter actually means. From another video on youtube but cannot remember the name of it. Gravity is key. The video showed an example of our solar system and how gravity effects the motion of the planets. Planets closer to the Sun travel around the Sun faster than planets further away from the Sun because further away gravity is weaker. So when they examined galaxies and studied galaxy rotation, they expected to see the same, i.e.; stars closer to the galactic center traveling faster than stars out on the edge where gravity would be weaker. But they saw something different. Stars far from the center of galaxies were traveling as fast as stars near the center. Like an Album turning on a turntable. The outside edge has the same speed as the center edge. There simply was not enough matter in a galaxy to cause this. So they came up with dark matter, stuff we can't see or detect but we know it is there because we see it's effects.

I mean we know there is a vastly larger amount of dark energy than there is normal energy, likewise it would seem reasonable to me that there would be much more theoretical collision between anti-darkmatter and darkmatter, possibly being responsible for the large amounts of dark energy we observe.
      Of course its all lose talk but its fun to think about

      mirilion79 I was just thinking that maybe our universe is actually part of a multiverse where matter from one universe affects another. Like, maybe dark matter is just us observing matter from another universe. We can't actually see it but we can see how it bends spacetime in the opposite way. Just a thought. I'm no expert in theoretical physics. :)

    One thing that I wish people would mention when discussing dark matter - and you did kinda mention it with dark energy - is that it's very possible that the General Relativity model of astrophysics is just wrong. There's something inherent in physics that makes galaxies form that it doesn't account for.
    That's basically what General Relativity did to Newton. It took us a good 250-300 years for someone to figure out what's missing from Newtonian physics...just because we haven't found out what's wrong with Einstein's theory doesn't mean it's perfect. Just means that it's really close to being accurate under most circumstances.
    Something you mentioned about dark energy goes along these lines - that it's a hitherto unrecognized property of space that causes it to expand, not simply energy that is present in some nebulous and seemingly impossible way.
    (It's a problem I noticed a fair bit in university; even the smartest people are taught to not question these landmark theories. Our understanding of physics is incomplete, which basically means that all of our theories are technically wrong, they're just increasingly close to being right, and are right enough that we can use them in many circumstances. It's dumb to just accept any scientific theory as correct until we somehow develop one that explains everything we observe. Which is probably not going to be any time soon.)

      This is false. Einstein rings also prove the existence of dark matter.

      exactly! I remember this one story about an Egyptian astronomer who calculated exactly the movements of the sun - assuming that the sun revolved around the earth. His calculations were complicated but so correct that they could be used precisely for hundreds of years! Maybe that is the case with modern physics.

      But then the first part of the sentence wouldn't make sense. As he says there are more theories to what dark matter is than what it isn't. And then he also says why these theories are wrong.

      @Ollie2220 9 лет назад +12

      Fabian Neundorf I think you're mistaken, he says "Right now, we have more ideas about what DARK ENERGY is not, than what it is". He then goes on to say what Dark MATTER is not. He meant to say "Right now, we have more ideas about what Dark Matter is not, than what it is".
      He says we know more about what Dark matter is not, rather than what it is.

    • @j.lucido9536
      @j.lucido9536 9 лет назад +1

      Ollie Maddox I think he said it right... Because we don't know what dark matter is, so we can only explain what it is not hence kind of, explaining it.. It's kind of a paradox. but it works to explain such things.

      19 Manjeets Gabriel's Darkness 19 Manjeets - there are more than one theories than time is the 4th dimension , ofcourse its one of the ways , but what people usually percieve 4d is as a spacial dimension, basically if you live in 2d you see in 1d , if you live in 3d you see everything in 2d , it makes sense coz we only see everything as a flat 2d image and surface , so in 4d youll see all sides of say a cube youll also see whats inside a cube , 4 - 1d lines make a 2d square , 6 - 2d sqaures make a 3d cube , 8 - 3d cubes make a 4d Tesseract .

I still don't see why it can just be matter that doesn't reflect light... like dust between here and Proxima.. or wherever, just doesn't reflect light or radio. I don't know, I just wish more presentations week clear about the idea of it being a place holder I'm equations because stuff doesn't work as expected at larger scales.
