***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

"These peels are going to turn into bacon." That was awesome. 🤣
Right ?! Def got my attention there 😂
Brilliant! Got my attention, too!! I can’t wait to try your cucumber drink! Gotta go to the farmers market first….I can’t have a garden where I live. ((Sob)). God bless, Bev in Maine
Hilarious!
No kidding ! That got my attention even more so.
Cute. It's so "a peeling".
Lol…love the t shirt, Kevin. I bet a little mint would be good in your cucumber lime-aid.
basil or thai basil also are great in lemonade/limeade
Mint mojito cucumber lime aid! Yum!! 😋
Last year, I instituted "Food Math Friday" into my homeschooling curriculum because I found I needed a set day to process all our veggies and do ferments and canning and all that. So today, on our first Food Math Friday of the year, my oldest (6) watched Kevin and wrote down all his instructions. He is now making cucumber limeade for his FMF lab. Thanks so much for your videos, they're useful in SO many capacities. God bless you and Sarah!
I live that you incorporate this into your homeschooling - great idea!
Awesome! We are also a homeschooling family. It’s almost October now so no more cukes in our garden now. But we will definitely be using these recipes next summer. My 12 year old daughter and I have been canning tomatoes like crazy and dehydrating all kinds of stuff this year. 375 quarts of tomatoes are down on our shelves in the basement and lots of other things.
We always use the garden, our horses, chickens, and all things to run our little 10 acre hobby farm to learn so much. There’s so many fun and values to learn that don’t take a textbook. 💕🎉
Thats an awesome idea!
Gotta say…those funnels look like magic! Going to have to get some like those! With my watermelon juicing, this summer, my kitchen looked like a crime scene!
I know the feeling. Most of my cooking, preserving, leaves my kitchen looking like a crime scene!
You want to talk about crime scene kitchens....my neighbors husband tried to make something involving spaghetti sauce and meat in the new pressure cooker without reading the directions fully. He removed the weight too soon. Sauce was spraying out all over the ceiling so he decided it would be a good idea to carry the pressure cooker to the sink and run old water over it but his method of getting it there didn't work out as planned. My neighbor came home to what looked like a jugular spay pattern all over the place in her kitchen, including the ceiling. I found out about the incident two days afterward when she called to ask what that incredible paint was I always use (Devoe, not available anymore). This was long before digital photography so I had to wait to see the photos. All I could say was at least it didn't explode, and she now had an incredible incident in her arsenal should she ever feel the need to use it against her husband. He could be a bit of a know it all type hence not reading the directions. 🤣😂🤣😂
@@sarah2.017 oh yes, he wanted to spend some of their vacation budget on painters because he didn't clean up fast enough and the sauce stained the walls and ceiling. I offered condolences knowing they were planning a big trip that year. She just smiled and said he bought the paint last night. My guess is that trump card came in really handy.⁷
Sorry for your pumpkin bread mishap. I once reheated a hard boiled egg in the microwave. It was too hot to bite into so I cut it in half to cool. As soon as the knife broke the surface it exploded everywhere. I missed church that day. Was cleaning egg up for hours.
LOL!!!
LOL
About 65 years ago I sat at my Grandmothers knee & sliced onions & cucumbers for her "refrigerator pickles" as you call them. Been using same recipe ever since although I often substitute jalapeno peppers for dill weed. Love what the peppers do for it.
Yummy. I like how you think. 😉
We always had cucumber and tomato mix cut into chunks. So tasty and great salad on a hot day.
Bahahaha! “They’re going to turn into bacon.”
I’m seriously dying 🤣
Kevin, if you add a pinch of salt into the juice, it will sweeten it a lot more. Just a tiny pinch. Try it not in the big gallon drink, but try it in the small glass and see if you like the taste.
I was thinking the same thing. Especially for summertime when we are outside working in the heat. Here in Oregon, we've been having triple digits for weeks now. I've even been adding a pinch of Himalayan pink salt to my coffee in the morning. Really helps me keep going in this heat.
@@aarifaamos Sure does. 😉
Kevin, you're missing another favorite use of large cucumbers. As kids we would take the large cucumbers from the garden, sneak into the kitchen for a butter knife, and carve a boat out of them that we would float down the creek on the farm...
This refreshing drink would make fantastic popsicles for you on those humid days. Gatorade has a similar flavor that I use for popsicles.
Yum-good idea!
Imo, gatorade is not something i put in my body 🦋
Kevin you are an entertainer
I grew up in Southern Indiana, we ate refrigerator pickles all summer long. Always in an old Cool Whip container. Thanks for the wonderful reminder.
Many asian countries cook cucumbers in curries and stir fries. I like cucumbers cut up into savory seasoned plain (not sweetened) yogurt.
Love the life you guys live. I am not well enough to homestead.....but admire those who do.
Kevin, I know you all like spicy things. I had a coupon and got these "cold processed" pickles for free. I wasn't going to pay $4 for a 12 ounce container (including brine) for these pickles. They are a dill spicy. I put a jalapeno, two habanero, dill, sliced onion, crushed garlic, vinegar and the sliced cucumbers. I just put them in jars and let them set for about 2 weeks in the fridge. My husband loves these!
From one former Gilbert Az. Resident homesteader to another I love the cucumber Lime Aide. We’ve been watching you two for over a year and have gained quite a bit of knowledge from you guys.
Love this cucumber limeaide . Have made it 4 times since watching this and have told all my family and friends.
Hi, Im going to definately make the cucumber limeaide...sounds awesome. every year We always have too many cucumbers..we went from 10 plants down to 2 and still get a ton of them..this year is the exception since I have been in the hospital on and off since January..that the good lord Im better now. I always make zuchinni bread but I found how to use cucumbers instead which is always a hit and I get requests to make more from friends and family..the way yo make it is similar to zuchinni but the changes are...you peel and seed the cucumber..you still grate or put in a foof processor on shred setting but then you put it in a strainer and let water go out of it for about 2 hours or more then your ready to start baking..that is my method but anyone can do what they like. God Bless
Glad you are doing better. Thank you for the info on using cucumber instead of zucchini in the bread. I was thinking there must be something to do with that cucumber pulp for those of us without 🐖's...or a compost bin...or a farm...heck I live in n apartment way too close to a major city for my liking. I'm going to try that bread with the cucumber pulp. Blessing upon you and yours. Stay safe out there. 🌺🌿🌺🌿🌺😷😊
I'm going to save the pulp and dehydrate! Two uses!lol
Thanks so much for the bread idea! Hope you stay well, prayer for you.
@@debbiemurray7426 then what?
@@borountree4539 Thankyou..its not just the pulp..use the whole cucumber like its a zuchinni..Just seed and peel them then shredd
Those bright yellow cucumbers make great cinnamon sweet pickles, you should try that recipe some time It takes a long time to make them, but they are oh so worth it for Christmas presents. :) Bright red cinnamon flavor, crispy and delicious.
Recipe, please! Sounds amazing!
My daughter has a bumper crop of cucu. He slices them, sprinkle with parmesean cheese. And freeze drys them. Tasty healthy snack!
"Something magical is going to happen to these peels... They're going to turn into bacon." 😂😂😂 Funniest thing I've heard all day.
You NEVER get too many cucumbers. I and my whole family can eat tons of sliced cucumbers everyday w/ Salt/peppers /sugar and vinegar. They are delicious. Sweet pickles, too. We love cucumbers.
Good job Kevin! I have a jar of your pickles in my refer as we speak! I love the limeade recipe too. Here's another idea for using cucumbers. Cucumber & Apple sandwiches with a slice of Gouda cheese. It sounds strange but really delicious!
That does sound delicious! What is your prefered bread?
Funny thing. I was actually snacking on my cucumber salad while watching this. 😉
You guys are awesome thank you for sharing your life with us!!
We make Agua Frescas with cucumbers and lime and love it also. I have made other Agua Frescas as well watermelon lime is another favorite!
Hello Vicky..
How are you doing today?
I watch you two all the time! I am a new gardener and have learned so much. Thank you and please continue bringing us great shows.
Try cucumber salad. Slice up several cucumbers add garden onions, green peppers ,cherry tomatoes and olive garden dressing original Italian. Put in refrigerator until cold.
I've accumulated a few gallon jugs by buying gallon jars of pickles. Once the pickles are all gone, the gallon jugs comes in handy for many things.
Question... If you're straining the juice, why bother peeling the cucumbers? It seems like leaving it on would add some extra nutrients (and maybe some color) to the drink, save some time, and the pigs would still get plenty of the peel in the pulp.
Sometimes the skin can be bitter. It depends on the fruit though.
My Cucumber Delight recipe is very similar. I love these just to munch on. 2c vinegar, 2c water, 1 c sugar, 3T salt, 1 small onion, 1 clove garlic.
Thanks for these recipes, Kevin and Sarah! Oh my goodness... These are great ways of using up cucumbers. While I was watering yesterday, I ate a cucumber straight out of the garden. Great timing, this video!
I like slicing and frying them like you would a squash delish...
Kevin you and your T-shirts are hilarious! Thanks for the video.
Cucumber infused water is refreshing, can't wait to make the cucumber lumeaid.
I've saved my gallon pickle jars over the years and even got some free off of craigslist. Now, I make my own pickles so I don't buy them anymore, BUT I use those jars for food storage. I have over 20 of them.
Love Kevin's shirt. I recently read that eating a cucumber a day is extremely healthy for you, so drinking it should be just as good.
I make refrigerator pickles using salt and dill with a little touch of sugar. They're excellent.
I'll have to try the drink. Last year I took my cucumbers, peeled and pureed them and froze in ice cube trays and then put in freezer bag. I would put a cube in my morning smoothie. So refreshing.
Hey Laurie I just did that thus morning! 👍🌱
Hello Kevin and Sarah, Thanks so such for sharing. Happy entering! Ever since I started watching your channel I have always wanted one of these. How fun!
I would love to be your " down the road a spell" neighbor momma! Love all the videos and learning, keep them coming. Yummy drink!!
When you had the blended cucumber for the limeade I was thinking that it looked like a smoothie and that got me thinking of popsicles and even homemade sherbet from your cucumber limeade recipe. Gotta try it! Thanks!!
Nice! 😉
Slushy. Or base for a homemade frozen adult beverage?
Try adding it to use in a ninja creami !! The best money I’ve ever spent!!
When I use a mandolin, I wear steel mesh gloves, and slice all of the cucumber
We would let our cucumbers go orange or yellow and even get some from the neighbors to make Lime Pickles...our favorite! Because the older cucumbers have a lot of meaty flesh...just peel, scrape out the seeds, cut the flesh into spears and soak in pickling lime for 24 hrs, rinse 3 times, then cook in vinegar, sugar, water, pickling spices til the cuke turns clear...put in jars...your done....taste like sweet-n-sour pickles, delicious! And the pickling lime makes them so crisp not soft or mushy, the best
That drink sounds delicious! Have you heard of TrueLemon, lemon and/or lime and/or grapefruit dehydrated powder? It is so easy to store and is delicious once rehydrated. Thank you for these ideas and the book recommendation. Sounds great.
GUYS! If you have a dehydrator...slice your cucumbers with a mandolin and make them into cucumber chips! Delicious with dill, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder
I put my seeds into a jar and shake it twice a day. Works great for tomatoes so would work for cucumbers too.
Since you Kevin called your self impatient, here is my recepie for 'instant pickeled 'cucumbers. Put sliced cucumbers in a jar layered with salt, sugar(sweetener)and fresh dill if available. Put the lid on and shake til juices begin to release. Add vinegar to your taste. Eat and enjoy, no waiting till tomorrow needed. 😊
I planted Chicago Pickling cukes this year. They were doing fine until our desert heat kicked up from 114 to 122° My plants died along with everything else I planted. Watering and shade did not matter. So when you have snow on the ground, I have a beautiful green garden.
I put my seeds in a jar and just put the lid on to shake for a couple of days, it works great and the pulp/gel pours off easily. I always enjoy your vlogs. God Bless your family.
Great tip!
Thank you. You two are so adorable and I enjoy your videos.
That cucumber lime juice is such a great idea! When I was on vacation, I had my sister harvesting in my garden and I told her to put my tomatoes in the freezer and the cakes in the crisper, but she thought everything needed to go in the freezer. Now I have a way to use those cucumbers after all. Thanks!
I can’t wait to try these recipes! We have an abundance of cucumber this year. Thank you for sharing.
Have you ever tried fried cucumbers?
Bread them and deep fry. Yum!
I have never seen anybody do that.
Thanks for sharing. Now I have 2 more ways to use my cucumbers. 😊 Also thanks for telling about the seed book was looking into what one to get. Thanks again. 😊
Peel your cucumbers and slice in half. Scrape out the seeds then fill with tuna salad, chicken salad, cottage cheese whatever you like best.
Thank you so much for this video! I was hoping you guys would do a video on the limeade!
Ooooh i like the cucumber limeade
I did 4 jars of refrigerated pickles today
Still got lots growing , knew about the seeds...thanks Kevin
I planted ONE cucumber plant and I have to give them away. I had no idea one plant could produce this much!
I made cucumber powder with my pulp. With the freeze dryer.
WE WERE LUCKY WE FOUUND A BUNCH OF THOSE JARS AT A YARD SALE... 50 CENTS A PIECE... :)
2 cucumbers. Seed cuc, slice halves in slices, personal preference, I like them sliced thin. Add 1 red onion slices. Add handful of dried berries (I use mix of golden raisins, cranberry & cherry). In small bowl whip together 1/2 small container lemon lofat or lol carb yogurt or use vanilla or plain & add Lennon juice. Add liquid stevia to taste. Fold in yogurt mix. Delicious!
Thank you Kevin! Really enjoyed your lessons today! I love cumbers!
Hello Kevin. Great video. I love cucumbers and like these recipes...thanks! Be well
Great to see you in the kitchen Kevin thanks for the tips …gotta try them ! 😊
This was awesome!! Living in Missouri now Columbia, from Wisconsin. My cucumbers are out of control!! Great idea!!
Can't wait to try that drink! Thanks Kevin.
I've found that a great resource for the gallon size jars is local restaurants. Most of them order pickles and they come in gall on size jars. I get them for free from some restaurants and sometimes a dollar or two at others. Love the videos you all make. Lots of great ideas and recipes! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Or buy a big jar of those pickles and repurpose them, eat them or throw them away - the jar is worth it!
Thanks Kevin for great info and instructions!
I find your videos very informative and to the point both of which I like.
Refrigerator pickles make me think of my grandfather. During the summer, he always had a bowl of brine with dill, onion, and sometimes garlic with thick slices of cucumber. I would sneak in the house and pick a few slices out whenever I could.
We love y'all's channel... great share Kevin! Big hugs...
Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks Kevin , we have so many ! These ideas are perfect
