they're not bland because they're based on asian thematics . They're bland because they keep sacrificing those themes to make the characters generically hot and attractive while putting wayy too much generic effects. When they actually stick to the themes we get top tier skin lines.
I think China's aesthetic taste tends to be bland and samey itself. It's gotta be beautiful and elegant and pale FIRST, and then everything else comes second. Example: Genshin Impact.
I wouldn't say that is necessarily true, it can be absolutely gorgeous if you put the effort in, but because of the overwhelming success of cultivating novels, most are known to be quite generic that makes the 'chinese thematic' to be rather bland

@@owo4470 Genshin is a Chinese game, for the Chinese market. There's a reason why all the characters in that game are skinny and pale. Same with League's asian-inspired skinlines. They all follow East-Asian beauty standards, because that's who they're marketing to.

After the Samira ultimate drama and now the Soraka looking similar to her previous legendaries, I wonder how the community will react to the new SKIN which is a "Mythic chroma but with a splashart" that cost 200 dollars.

the moment i saw this skinline i just didnt care, they all look like they belong to different skinlines, kayle as you said to faerie court, zed is literally inkshadow, he even has the logo/symbol/icon thingy idk, sona is straight up spirit blossom but with jewelry, zeri could fit in with the dragonmancers with just a couple tweaks, shyvana is just a shan hai scrolls/firecracker prestige skin in my eyes. and soraka i dont even know and dont feel like bothering to think of it.
I think a lot of those comparisons are quite a stretch, yet it is crazy how many asian themed skin lines there are
@@mikonyx7712 the only one id say is a stretch is sona, maybe zeri. But i actually really like the zeri skin just visually, too bad its not really got a good concept behind it, sorakas the only one that reminds me of like divine sword irelia. I suppose sona sort of looks like the yi skin. Which are the only real way i could correlate these to the old skinline, zeri probably has another skinline to fit into but i just simply couldnt be bothered to do too much research for a youtube comment and went with my first thought.
By the way, in terms of general Wuxia and Xianxia themes, Zed is actually a very good representation of the whole aesthetic because swords aren't the ONLY thing that exists in Wuxia settings. There's assassins with unique weapons, people who doesn't even use bladed weapons (like the Shaolin temple or Fist-based martial clans) and even scythes as weapons and such. Swords are very common, yes, but not the only option. As a Wuxia reader and a fan I think inclusion of Zed as part of the assassin sect is perfect. It's finally representing aspects of the genre that have not been represented at all.
And also I think there's legit an oversaturation of swords in the Immortal Journey skinline as a whole. It's not all about swords and daggers, the qi blasts often take shape of animals the martial arts they are based on, and Riot could incorporate more of the Wuxia setting as a whole
But as it stands the skinline still feels very much a surface-level application of the genre, not understanding what makes the setting so captivating. Like imagine if Riot made a DnD skinline but every single character was just made as a paladin. THAT'S WHAT IT FEELS LIKE ON IMMORTAL JOURNEY FOCUSING ONLY ON SWORDS

Been waiting for eastern dragon Shyv forever and I like this a lot, new favorite for sure, but damn she's so held back.
Ruined at least looks somewhat strong and has the least offensive dragon form, but I prefer this outfit and color scheme.
Also the sword effects on her Qs are just great.
Zed is supposed to stick out and be an odd one out and I think it works perfectly - the skinline is themed after Xianxia and Zed is the classic fakken hero of that - turning from classic cultivation and enlightenment to the frowned-upon, dangerous demonic cultivation for power and progress. That's why he looks a little off to the others but I like it (if there ain't Wei Wuxian influences in his story and design I'll be surprised).
Zeri though does not work at all and idk why they chose her of all ADCs if they really needed one to be in this batch. I feel Nilah, Kalista or Aphelios could've worked with the thematic.

I main Shen too. I am really annoyed at this point, Zed,Soraka,Janna just get skins for the sake of getting skins to sell a champion like Shen isn't as popular and won't get skins frequently.But you have to admit Ashen Shen is cool asf and boy got that muscle

As a Sona main I think the skin is very pretty! However, it’s nothing new at all for Sona
The Chinese chroma splash for Guqin Sona looks almost identical to Immortal Journey Sona, and I just wish they’d be a little bit more creative than “pretty Chinese lady with long hair and long dress” for every skin of hers (not counting PsyOps and DJ those skins slap)

I have a theory that this Zed skin was meant to be released with the Mythmaker skins but for whatever reason was delayed and rebranded for this skin line. Just compare the color scheme and the art style of Immortal Journey Zed to any of the Mythmaker skins, It's so obvious once you notice!

I feel what made the other skins feel so good was that they had different names and didn't really release in batches, it felt like you were getting one character in a big story

I really dislike how it is getting more and more difficult to actually figure out what Champion it is supposed to be when looking at Icons but also Splashes and ingame Models sometimes. Like if Kayle wasn't floating, I would have thought she was Kai'Sa.....

I love the soraka skin and I personally don't care if animations r reused tbh but I get y ppl get upset when they do especially on a 40 dollar skin. Difference is they were reusing default samira on an ultimate skin when it looks more like they took inspiration from sorakas other legendary. So ur still getting legendary animations and such in a way. I think it's her best skin

The Zeri skin reminded me of the Shard of Lightning from Xiaolin Showdown so i just viewed it as someone fighting for a Shen Gong Wu. I am a little sad that she doesnt ride storm clouds on her wall ride. also the splash art for the Prestige Sona skin is incredible regardless of how the version translates to the rift.
Oh the shurikens on the red skin draw way too much focus and make a sleek base model look too bulky. Man looks like a top heavy double copter.

Effect wise is great, but the skin is kinda painfully generic. It's basically similar to the League of Angels type of generic. Not saying it bad but cmon it's a Dawnbringer/Nightbringer skin

@@etheron1235 I can agree that the thematic is generic sure but in my opinion I don’t believe it deducts much if any points from the skin itself in this case. The execution is beautiful and far from generic in my opinion. Simple and graceful

Honestly, the only good Immortal journey skin is Majestic Empress Morgana. Didn't even know it was part of a skinline, but that skin slaps harder than her Legendsry.
I actually read some of the lore of the original skins like Irelia or Riven and it was in my opinion pretty good. I think if they stayed true to the original story even now, it would have been much better

I swear the first time I saw the soraka skin in game, I thought it was Leblanc. I was so scared she was going to jump onto me only for her to plop her e down. I was so dumbfounded til I had to look at the scoreboard to see it was her.
Wish they made Sona look more traditional, cause they used guqin sounds for her sfx, but she uses the etwahl in design.. like stop using the same shape, it would've been so justified to give her a proper guqin..
And the thing with her prestige skin: supposedly because of memory, the skin has very limited model and VFX edits, even Sona mains complained how it doesn't feel special.. hopefully she gets an ASU soon as well, because she feels clunky just like Leblanc and shyvanna who are old and outdated in terms of model rigs and animations

All of these skins make 20x more sense if you have ever read wuxia or manhua.
Zeri is like a typical flying swords user like kayle, zed is that one assasin character, sona is the magical zither player and so forth.
I think these stories are fun, and a lot of them tend to be very similar with their themes of cultivation, dao and other philosophies
I feel triggered by Kayle' wings clipping through her head at times with the new Immortal Journey skin.
I really loved immortal journey (zeri is my BABY) but I feel like it’s just because it’s pulling from the same influences for each East Asian skin line it’s starting to feel cramped. Where are the dragons from past immortal journey skins? Maybe pull south east Asian for Zeri seeing as she’s FILIPINO? Like there’s so many inspirations within Chinese manhua and wuxia but they keep grabbing from like crouching tiger hidden dragon.
Also doesn't sit well with me that she was inspired from filipino culture and yet they put her in a Chinese skinline (considering the friction between southeast asia and china). When will riot ever make a SEA inspired skinline? 😭
Thank you Nicky for talking about the only problem with Shyvana and her skins, the only ones that did it good were Ironscale and championship. And thank god for Icedrake Shyvana.
Though i like to think that the pale skin of her ruined form isn't human, just to go to sleep without crying for waiting 4 years for a skin that was part of a horrible canon event.

i agree with everything except dawnbringer + nightbringer soraka being bad. imo dawnbringer soraka is one of the best skins aesthetically, afx and fantasy wise aswell.

Didnt even know these existed.....lord knows i wouldve just though this was a mobile legends skin line or something. And i do think its that the thematic is blander than vanilla, it aint even that, its skimmed milk flavor wise, atleast with inkshadow there was a cool thematic and lets be real, theres like 20 different east asian themed skinlines, how bout a sort of south asian skinline. Imagine a Khmer/Old Indian or Vietnamese castle.....make it into a Galio, would feel awesome wouldnt you say. And its exploring more than just......."Wuxia" tropes, theres only so many "Divine *insert sword or staff here*" before the well is dried up. Imagine a skinline with Nilah having that signature Whip Sword from old indian times, i think it was called the Yumi sword or something

As a filthy skin buying soraka otp I can't tell you how much I wanted a skin with new animations that isn't so boring it belongs in a mobile game. I am a bit sad they're similar but considering I am never ever taking the old legendaries again I will quickly forget that it ever was an issue.

Depends on the skinline tbh. Inmortal journey was bound to somewhat have it rough cuz theyir aesthethic was already...bland. Same thing with nightbringer and dawnbringer.
But the other old skinlines that came back so far in the year managed to be really good! Shan hai scrolls has bangers, the two elderwoods (with karthus winning a new best skin), snow moon got a gorgeous new snow skins for varus and morgana (and ahri too ig but she has too many pretty ones after the asu), and cats vs dogs. It is possible to bring back old skinlines with a lot of potential.
Just imagine a worldbreaker ornn or worldbreaker rek sai. That's the stuff of dreams.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one to feel this way. I didn't watch the animations because the skins look so generic and I didn't even realize that this eas the same skinline as the ol' sword skins from back when. Zeri doesn't fit and Zed looks like he came from a different skinlineI'm glad that Soraka got a legendary skin though.

Sun eater kayle doesnt fit my taste. I still use the psyops because its geometric wings makes better use of leagues shitty fluid material animation engine better than actual wing looking wings. But this one is pwetty because her wings look like a flower and I agree it's a better fit for fairy court skinline.
It's the xianxia aesthetic. They all look the same because they're "martial heroes with mystical powers from ancient times!" so making a good slinline with only xianxia aesthetics is going to look samey and lame cause well that's what the aesthetic normal is, you gotta mix with with something else for it to look fun
The generic feeling of this line legit made me think it was as oversaturated as the likes of project so realizing it wasnt is wild

TBH PROJECT didn't recieved a new skin since 2021 It may be likely that they're comeback to this in 2024. also TIL Cyber pop is part of the PROJECT universe.

Barring True Damage Senna, my mains keep getting crappy prestiges. First the piss yellow Star Guardian Soraka, then the other Senna prestige and now this Sona skin of which the original is a hundred times better... Once Akshan gets a prestige... I guess it'll suck too
I think it's fair that Soraka's new legendary has animations that are very similar yet slightly different than her other legendaries. In Samira's case its comparing her base model to an ultimate skin's animations that have 0 differences. If Samira's skin didn't come out first i think people would like this Soraka skin more because it IS gorgeous and I like it way more than dawnbringer
also the zeri skin is pretty and, you're right she does not fit the skinline. but it's zeri so i don't mind. I wish riot would make zeri be on skinlines that fit her though. Withered rose and ocean song are ok but she's one of the only good skins in both lines which is sad.
