As a result, my father was a police officer during our early childhood. And he and black officers SERVED our community. They were known for being compassionate, for caring about their people, for defending those who couldn't defend themselves. And the white officers and leadership within their precinct always tried to get in the way of their positive influence. My father was raised in public housing so he had a bit of a hot head, and he would get into fist fights with white officers. So, he and other black officers formed an organization to fight racism within the police force. Their group was called The Afro American Patrolman's League and they actually sued the force and won. But it was bigger than that. We were raised in The Black Power Movement and where ever they worked and within our communities they served our people. My father always taught weekend classes at one of the urban community colleges and even started a basketball team that beat larger Community College teams in the state. So once my sisters and I went to high school and had to travel across the city to get there, random black men would recognize us and tell us how my father is the reason they stayed with the mothers of their children and got married and things like that. And my parents were active in everything that happened in our community and knowing that my father was a cop, he had guns, we had German Shepherds, my mother always helped anyone that needed it, our family was highly respected is all. But that was everyone we knew. All of my God-mothers and God-fathers were like that and respected like that. It was just a different time and even the generations before that time black people had much more unity and self love and a desire to live among our own that we don't always have now. Today....so much of that is missing, but not totally. Peace
And this is what our community needs more than any famous leader or any one organization. We need for all of us as individuals to bring our interests and skills back to OUR community and work very hard to rebuild what we've lost and to protect it and to become good neighbors again. And to become God centered again.
