I've worked with people like this, they rarely get caught. It's always the guy that busts his hump day in and day out, taking a sandwich or smoke break, that ends up getting his or her ass chewed.

Most garbage collectors are on task hours. They get paid for eight hours daily but if they finish their routes in 5 hours, they are technically done for the day but they hang out in the early afternoon to make it look like their route takes longer to run. They get their full shift pay and almost never work more that 5 hours. I know because I supervised sanitation workers in the past. It is part of their union contract and that is why they sit around in the afternoon.

not true. Anyone in a job that gets paid task hours, or union rules or such will simply finish their tasks under time then leave. They get paid for 8 hours no matter what, so if they get done early they are not going to hang around they are going to go home. The only people "hanging around" are those on hourly wage who are milking the clock to get paid for doing nothing. There is NO job that people finish their work and can go home and still get paid, and will just stay at work.

So doing the math.
$40 an hour x 40 hrs per week = $1600 per week x 52 weeks = $83,200 per year. If they received double time for Saturday and Sunday that would be $80 per hour x 16 hrs per week = $1200 per week x 52 = $66,560. $66,560+$83,200 =$149,760. This assumes the worker worked every single day of the year with a base wage of $40 per hour. The report stated they made $20 per hour. Where are the internal auditors?
Take out 25% for taxes and other assorted crap.

They are so lucky they can just chill and make money. I work in service repair and some days my dispatcher keeps calling to check up on me every 10 minutes, asking if I'm done because he has another call for me. I should have been a garbage man instead.
They made over $100k in overtime for the past 10 years. They could be making $35k a year plus $10k for OT. That doesn't sound as nice as saying "this guy made over $100k in OT.... " and the average veiewer would be asking... on top of their regular salary? Man, I'm in the wrong line of work.

So what if the drivers take a break or go get some lunch with a buddy? They’re allowed two breaks and a lunch break, and how ever long they need to dump the load at the transfer station or landfill. There breaks are as long as an hour from what I’ve seen, so no issue for them to take a break. Crappy news source having a slow day, I guess
What they need is a live dispatcher watching routes at all times till they all get back have different drivers run different routes and times, to see if they are running the same time
Different drivers will always finish at different times the routes will not take the same amount of time to finish every time either because some days people have more trash out than usual, traffic, or something breaks in the truck

That was an interview full of so many non-answers as I have never heard. And as for the one employee resigning, that was so that he/she could still work at another position within government.
In Mineola , NY. , the former mayor , Jack Martins , then went on to be a senator . He made a deal to have the garbage taken to the NEXT county , instead of about 5 miles away . We were told it's cheaper . But , the crew of THREE ALWAYS goes for the ride and returns HOURS later ! So the dump FEE is LESS , but EVERYTHING else costs MORE !!!!!!
These are hit pieces done on the behalf of private companies who are angling for the contracts. If there are a few bad employees, they need to be fired, and the managers need to be in the field checking on their employees and coming up with more tasks that can been like roadside clean up.

I see the trucks in my city stop and park, usually just for 30 minutes. pretty sure its cause they get a lunch break and are allowed to. This seems a lil different though, but who knows.

Lack of supervision and organizational leadership causes this kind of stuff which happens in all government operations. Whether its cops, bureacrats, customer service, parks, public works, doesn't matter one bit what Department. Your basic worker takes the path of least resistance every chance they get. You must have production standards of some type and a supervisor who holds the feet to the fire, fairly across the board.

I like the free and open market I have in my area, 6 or 7 trash companies that I could pick from and they don't sit around.
In bigger cities, it's not feasible (logistically) to have multiple contractors for residential pick-up. Most will have one and commercial businesses will be left to the own devices.

I'm a pickup and delivery truck driver.
I look for a spot where I can pull over and just relax(lunch and 15 minute break... 45 minutes altogether) after I have taken care of all my stops and my dispatcher doesn't have anything else for me to do.
Or in some cases, when I have 2 or 3 deliveries, they send me pickups that will not be ready for 45 minutes to an hour.....so what can I do?
not the same as this. These people have routes, your a delivery guy you don't have routes, so you get to sit around and wait for the next call. If you were a route delivery driver you would be doing your route and not "waiting" for a call.

I'll be in one area one day, different area the next , and so on.
If I had a route, I'd have maybe 15 stops ALL DAY long.
A few deliveries and then pick up freight.
I'd be on the move trying to unload my trailer. Then.....fill it up trying to help businesses ship out their freight

MrBassMann Nothing wrong with stopping for meals as you are required to take a 1/2 hr lunch otherwise you get questioned by management why it wasn't done. Stopping for snacks is one thing, but it should be something already brought from home. I use to do this a laborer for WM in Port Charlotte Florida, but when the truck brakes down & your sitting there for more than an hour. What do people expect you to do, run with a broken truck. It just annoys me how the reporter has to pick on them for getting meals & when you meet up with another truck for lunch or more of them. It makes lunch more enjoyable than sitting there alone. I don't do it anymore as the hours were on & off as the hours were steady then not.
MrBassMann it ain’t nothing wrong with it, the problem, if you watched the video, was with workers seating in their trucks doing nothing for long periods of time!! Also making stops to purchase items when it wasn’t lunch hour, there is specific hours to take lunch/brakes and those workers didn’t seem to be following that rule!!

Maybe I'm missing something.. but $100,000 over 10 years is $10k a year... which comes to about $833 a month ... over the 200 employees the department employees that is around $4.17 per employee......oh yea.. they are def getting paid.

Up here in Ocala I work for privately owned company yeah they don't want to sit around for 15 minutes to take a break so I don't know how these guys down there in Tampa are able to get away with sitting around doing nothing. Maybe they need to start considering hiring people that are not lazy and as me being a salary employee is that posed to being per hour which is what maybe they should do over there in Tampa before salary we get paid the same amount regardless of how much time we spend on the clock as in we want to hurry up and get done

Not good. Had the same issue here in Milwaukee just several months ago. If the city could tie workers wages to the weight of the truck...the more trash you pickup, the heavier the truck. More trash weight equals more money. Less trash weight, less money.
