a nasty world w/o them and backyard burn barrels going to foul up the neighborhood. not to mention fires started from burning paper flying out of the burn barrels. i grew up in the 1950s and 60's when everyone burned burnable trash and dumped the remaining trash on the roadside, on the back edge of their property or dumped it into the local polluted river flowing thru town. don't want to go back to those days again.
During this pandemic we're even more overwhelmed especially with people not going to work so extra trash and then everything's out of compliance so a lot of stuff we can't take and then the angry Karen's start attacking...literally they will stick their head up in the truck with no masks start yelling at your ass and even try to assault you we've had that happen a few times already. Just because we can't pick up certain things beyond our requirements
if you have a route with actual distance between refuse. say forty feet, sometimes id wave the driver forward and grab two houses more before i threw the bags on truck. your cardio makes you do the job easier. btw, on day two i puked in the street but i didnt quit.
Inexperience. You learn pretty quick that using body weight and kinetic energy helps you save energy, get the job done, and avoid most atraining injuries. Worst thing about all this is the lack of provided PPE. The company should be ashamed.
@@killinkrillin I had a decent company I guess. Guy I went to school with was owner. Actual work time was about four hours of throwing. But paid whole shift including if you just ride with driver to dump ground to get an extra hour. They also reimbursed us for any ppe we bought. I have larger hands so that was nice.
Sanitation Worker here... I can speak for my colleagues... We don't want accolades, we don't want awards, we don't want your appreciation, etc etc. All we want is some respect when you roll up on us with your cars. We know you're in a hurry and we are in your way, we only intentionally block you to protect our co-worker who may be working several car lengths ahead! 👍
@ Eric Feli it depends. Where I live there is one garbage truck that is out on a regular basis at 8AM (which is the heaviest traffic flow time for rush hour). They operate on a very wide major road (it is single lane road but wide enough for at least 2 lanes in each direction). The garbage truck will stop the traffic for an extended period, as they go to each house. The garbage haulers are staying on the one side of the road (since it is a major road it wouldn't be safe for them to cross over the street, to collect garbage from the other side), so when they step off the truck they are curb side next to the truck, there is no way they could be hit by a passing driver. However, the trash truck will NOT move over a few feet toward the curb, to allow drivers to safely pass around him. It is a very wide road, so there is plenty of room. The trash truck is FORCING drivers to illegally go over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic to get around him. All the cars eventually pass by driving into oncoming traffic that is going very fast, because if you didn't you would be stuck behind the truck for 30 minutes while they go house to house. There is no other alternative route other then to use this road to get to work, otherwise I would. I tried to time my commute to avoid the truck but he could be 15 minutes earlier or later, so it is pointless. How is this safe, to force drivers to cross over the line into oncoming traffic, when they cannot see around the truck and sometimes it is foggy and raining weather.
@@jansa940 Maybe the Sanitation workers on that route are discourteous, certainly I am not here to defend the actions of all Sanitation workers! Some are miserable, down right rude, and lack etiquette or common sense. Personally, I try to justify the truck to the curb I am working on whenever prudent. There are times when I do INTENTIONALLY not pull curbside. There is a specific avenue on my route, EXACTLY as you describe. Our speed limit is 25mph and traffic routinely flows at 40+mph. By blocking slightly to the medial side, we are in affect slowing traffic on purpose. Why? Because in this situation, we don't want traffic that is flowing at 40mph, misjudging the oncoming traffic on a pass attempt, decide in the last second that there is not enough room, and swerve into us while we are loading. At that speed, stopping distance is crucial, if you worked exposed at the rear of this machine, you would understand. Now I wouldn't block you completely, I absolutely would like for you to pass me, I just want you to pass me at or below the speed limit. I hope this makes sense. ✌

@@zac7258 Only one way to figure out my men. This job is definitely not made for everyone, but you can definitely make it fun if you are active and enthusiastic. You will have to deal with costumers from time to time because some won't understand why you can't take their garbage, but for the most, the city will take care of it. Based on how you described it, I really think you should try it for yourself !

One thing I learned working in a warehouse, practically anyone will help you if you get injured. You might get scolded for the rest of your time there by the old guys for doing something dangerous, but they'll help you. don't fuck up and get management making new rules making the work harder. be safe. follow the rules. dont complain about small things that don't pose risk, otherwise it could backfire and management decides not only is it all good, but there should be more. be mindful of the other warehouse pickers and warehouse drivers, clean up your labels. its all teamwork to make the shipping orders go by faster.

I taught my son as soon as he was old enough to talk to say "thank you" to the people that take our trash and recycling. They are so under appreciated and we NEED them for our society to run smoothly!

Ohhh memories. I’ve been a trash man for 23 years. Now I’m a driver. But started as a laborer like these guys. Most of the time I was by myself. We made it a competition to see who could get their rout done first. Jumping up and down the steps or running behind the truck. This was the first CrossFit workout we got paid to work out. No matter the weather hundred degrees or below zero I had work. Do this day my hands are not the same and my feet also get cold easy.
We are essential when everyone was locked in for covid besides nurses fire fighters police EMS grocery store workers we were still out there. I went 3 weeks straight with out a partner during covid just me and driver.
I did construction for 30 years in North Carolina,it gets HOT.May go on a solar job in a month until end of the year then its inside on out.I am 58 in July.

Not when they’re doing it by hand. Talking from experience those big ass wheeled and flip lidded cans are absolute nightmare to dump and maneuver without bumping them into shit or tipping them over. If they had flippers than that’d be a different story.

I did this for three years and by the grace of god I was able to get out of there but I have NEVER forgot about the long days struggling in the rain and cold picking up garbage. When I hear people complaining at work, all I can think is “they have no idea how good they got it here”. Great video, thanks for showing people what it’s really like to be the garbage man.
My favorite was that his wife and the driver can barley speak english and i found it so endearing that they both sat there awkwardly trying to speak english to each other and once the first Spanish word was said then BAM it was a natural engaging conversation.

For real. When I was 18, I had a job at a factory feeding 60 books a min...1 per second in stacks into a feeder . Had to skid and rack my own pallets as well while not stopping the flow. 3 grown men quit in 2 weeks. They wanted me out, so they put me in. My need for money and food overcame what I thought my body could not. I earned my respect,and bulked up n. Hulked out. I left for a better suited job for myself. I didn't like looking like a body building lady. Much respect

As a former employee of waste management, I was a loader for 3 years I worked in all kinds of weather and picked up all kinds of trash, but I'll tell you this it was favorite job because it kept me grounded and kept me humble

I've ran garbage and recycling routes, I've had what I thought were near impossible days. Barely making it by the end. Those were nothing compared to this. I swear y'all did more in the first 90 minutes than I did by lunch. I will never complain again, I tip my hat to you gentlemen. You sirs, are some damn animals. Straight up beasts. No way I could handle those routes.
Depends on what state and neighborhood you live in, this is jersey, so it's pretty congested, NYC is even worse, I don't even see any separation of recyclables, so I can imagine how much more difficult that would be

It’s wierd to me to think that some people have such an elitist attitude towards dirty jobs. Growing up, my parents were always friendly to the neighborhood garbage men. My mother would often give them food wrapped up or things she baked like cookies at christmas time. It’s very sad that so many people have fallen into the very selfish bubble of thinking they are better than others.
It's amazing how garbage collection varies so much from one part of the country to another. Where I live we haven't done trash collection like this in decades. In fact we rarely even get out of the truck. Automated hydraulic arms/grabbers to reach out and grab the residential trash carts. It's up to the customer to not have the carts blocked. If they are blocked then they don't get serviced. I'm in the commercial side of the business where I service the dumpsters you find at businesses. Pretty easy, new trucks, great pay and benefits, 4 day work weeks with a 3 day weekend every week. Been doing it for 15 years and it's a great job. But again, it all depends on what part of the country you're in. In this video it's obviously hard, dirty, tiring work. Glad we don't do it like this.
@@John-ze3vo Yes, I'm aware of why some locations are still using rear loads. Been in this business a long time and have witnessed trash collection in a lot of different countries. It's crazy how it can vary. I was in Costa Rica behind a trash truck and pulled over to see how they operated. Basically it was a dump truck with 2 guys in the dump body/bucket and 3 guys in the cab. When the truck would get to the next stop, 2 guys would get out of the cab and throw the bags of trash up to the 2 guys in the bucket. The driver did nothing but drive. 5 men to operate one route.
Underpinning was the most difficult job I've done. Even beats Ironworker.. countless hours shoveling heavy dirt. Breaking concrete slabs. Holding a heavy hammer drill while hunched over literally chipping dirt as hard as clay under my feet level. It was horrible and I had dirt and concrete mix in my lungs all day. You die fast there...
@Michael P not at all. In that field theres no such thing as "danger pay"(basically pay more when working around dangerous things) It was a terrible job and only paid well tot he contractor.

I was a garbage man for like 3 months and on certain runs there would be different people just chillin waiting to give us waters. I still remember most of them, it really is so nice when people help out.

I was helper before becoming a driver and I tell any new helper up front, this will be the hardest job you’ve ever done in your life. Mentally physically and spiritually, you will have days when you just get mad at every can for having trash. I like to call them Trashletes. They work out from the time they grab the first bag to their last.

I did garbage collection for a private company for 3 days in a row! You wouldn't believe the kind of good stuff that people throw away. I found a case of wine, a flat screen tv, and some boots that fit me perfectly!
working for waste management and not seeing arm pickups and standard cans really slows everything down. But also these streets would probably be too packed to even operate an arm along with all the trash i'd imagine a lot would also be outside the cans which may get left behind depending if they change up the rules for this neighborhood then you'd just be driving a green painted version of this and be back to square one with a loading team

This. Standardized cans with wheels and rugged handles. Enforce trash laws (no trash on the sidewalk, no bulk items). This all makes for cleaner streets and better work-life for employees. And better recycling programs. This is how it's done in San Francisco.

I started as a sanitation worker 2 years ago, and this is someone who’s been weight lifting for the last 17 years at the gym and does cardio, and let me tell you....in the beginning of this job I would be exhausted after the routes, a month or 2 later I would fling bags in the hopper and lift these pals dumping them into the hopper with no problem. Yeah its physical and you get a workout from it but it’s a whole different world from the gym. Your using muscles that never have been used, so eventually your body will get adjusted to it. But make sure when your done, either at the base or when you get home from work make sure you do body stretches. It’s a great job but also be mindful of taking care of your body and have a good balance diet, and always stay hydrated. You will do fine.
i do this job here in jackson michigan. i do this in the a.m as a runner (the guys on the back) and im getting my cdl b and then ill have my own route. ill be driving and grabbing cans because thats how we do it here. then after i get out. i go into my second part time job as a forklift operator. 5 days a week to pay the bills and feed my 4 kiddos. take alot of pride in it. appreciate the recognition and respect.
Idk about there but where I live I think they make $80k a year. Well the drivers do I have heard. Also unionized. Also that 80k a year might mean working 7 days a week etc idk. $80+k is still not enough they work way harder than most!

I just got over a back injury and was off a few years ago for another injury. So I have always wanted to try being a driver for something else. I’ve been at it for almost 4years now. We put up with allot at a fast pace all day rain shine snow whatever the day brings. All I can say is remember us come Christmas time. Tips are appreciated that time of year, a thank you card a wave or a smile. Baked goods ect…and don’t forget your mail person as well.

I've been doing this job for over 4 years now, with no intent of quitting anytime soon. I get paid to exercise and be outside all day, I love it. Sometimes the weather can be brutal, and just like any other job you're going to have some bad days. I wish I would of found this job a lot sooner then I did, because it's been the best job I've ever had so far.
I'm 24 and been a Sanitation engineer for almost 6 years now and I love it! I look at it as a workout instead of paying thousands of dollars at the gym ! Only thing that sucks about it is working in the rain or extreme heat! I've seen alot of people around my age get hired and then end up quitting after a month or 2 over the years! Sanitation engineers are the hardest working and essential career in the field and is a real man's job!!!💯💯💯💪💪💪🤘
In my country, you can't just leave trash out like that. 1) You pay for each bin. If you want to have more bins? Pay more. 2) If you have any other random trash, you take it to the local center and the workers there will process/take care of it. It's understandable the city cannot deal with junk when there is just no end to it. :/

In Mexico every garbage truck is that style. Neighborhoods to tend to be closely packed, and too many cars make streets tight, so there's no free space to put fork-compatible garbage bins, hence these trucks are the norm.
it's not bad...the summertime is exhausting and a bit overwhelming...layered up you have the options of taking some off...but good luck finding a good pair of gloves that will keep your hands dry and warm...
Although it would be cold, I can imagine it wouldn’t as disgusting as summertime, as in summer the humidity and insects and bacteria and all kinds of nasty shit alive in the warmth.
This is definitely a job that you would have to do to appreciate, I’ve done this for 5 years now. I am no longer a groundsman that works on the back but I will never forget when I first started how much I hated getting splashed with rain mixed with dead/live animals, bugs, maxi pads, tampons, condoms, syringes and just about anything else you can think of. That wearing you down mentally and the weather added with the physical portion wearing you down physically. Our routes here in Ohio are cans that can go on tippers on the back that will dump for you. The way these guys have to throw garbage puts a whole different type of beating on you. Respect to all of them.
remember they are slowly drenched in trash and the smell of trash the whole day. if that isn't bad enough, they have to constantly keep up with the disposal of large and heavy bags of trash, and there's no stopping so its always moving. at the same time being cut up in the process. if work was a picture, a garbage man would be that picture. this is absolutely insane the amount of hard work is involved in this job. so much fucking respect for the men and women who do these jobs. man this is insane.
I remember walking to the bus stop in the summer, and one of the throwers on the back asked me was I going to summer school. (I said yes) he said get your education and hit your books hard because you don't want to do this every day. It stuck with me and I was only 13 then.
70 grand and benefits should be standard after putting in your trial days. That’s real work and it’s essential for society. Gotta take care of these workers and that’s just the damn truth.
23.80/hr Cdn ×4days/wk= 50K. My cheques were 2k if I was lucky. 2200 if there's statutory pay included, but it all depends on what material you're hauling, if you get overtime that day, and if you get a tonnage incentive. Lucky to touch 55kCdn (45k USD?)/yr doing this.

Some days you can make over 1k, but you might also make 1k in a WK just depends. Most truckers average 50k a yr which isn't bad. You could always work retail and struggle to make barely over 20k.
These guys are Saints. I had no idea how complicated both physically and mentally their job is. Next time I see one of these guys in action I'm going to salute them, And thank them for their service to our communities.
We used to manually pick up trash like that here in Indy, but now it all in 96 Gal Toters, with Toter Tippers to help lift it up off the ground. which made the job easier, but we still deal with bad people.
As a front loader operator, winters are pretty bad as well. The containers are frozen and it’s very easy for the containers to slip off the forks and go into the hopper of the truck. Likewise, it’s hard to move the containers when they’re frozen as well, so winter can be just as bad as summer. Summer just makes it smell really bad.

Honestly this work is what I’ll plan on doing someday. I’ve been a dishwasher for years and it is these jobs that are needed and are honestly the jobs that make a lot of people happy. It’s not so bad if you have a positive outlook!

a nasty world w/o them and backyard burn barrels going to foul up the neighborhood. not to mention fires started from burning paper flying out of the burn barrels. i grew up in the 1950s and 60's when everyone burned burnable trash and dumped the remaining trash on the roadside, on the back edge of their property or dumped it into the local polluted river flowing thru town. don't want to go back to those days again.

During this pandemic we're even more overwhelmed especially with people not going to work so extra trash and then everything's out of compliance so a lot of stuff we can't take and then the angry Karen's start attacking...literally they will stick their head up in the truck with no masks start yelling at your ass and even try to assault you we've had that happen a few times already. Just because we can't pick up certain things beyond our requirements

@@killinkrillin I had a decent company I guess. Guy I went to school with was owner. Actual work time was about four hours of throwing. But paid whole shift including if you just ride with driver to dump ground to get an extra hour. They also reimbursed us for any ppe we bought. I have larger hands so that was nice.

We don't want accolades, we don't want awards, we don't want your appreciation, etc etc. All we want is some respect when you roll up on us with your cars. @ Eric Feli it depends. Where I live there is one garbage truck that is out on a regular basis at 8AM (which is the heaviest traffic flow time for rush hour). They operate on a very wide major road (it is single lane road but wide enough for at least 2 lanes in each direction). The garbage truck will stop the traffic for an extended period, as they go to each house. The garbage haulers are staying on the one side of the road (since it is a major road it wouldn't be safe for them to cross over the street, to collect garbage from the other side), so when they step off the truck they are curb side next to the truck, there is no way they could be hit by a passing driver. However, the trash truck will NOT move over a few feet toward the curb, to allow drivers to safely pass around him. It is a very wide road, so there is plenty of room. The trash truck is FORCING drivers to illegally go over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic to get around him. All the cars eventually pass by driving into oncoming traffic that is going very fast, because if you didn't you would be stuck behind the truck for 30 minutes while they go house to house. There is no other alternative route other then to use this road to get to work, otherwise I would. I tried to time my commute to avoid the truck but he could be 15 minutes earlier or later, so it is pointless. How is this safe, to force drivers to cross over the line into oncoming traffic, when they cannot see around the truck and sometimes it is foggy and raining weather.

@@jansa940 Maybe the Sanitation workers on that route are discourteous, certainly I am not here to defend the actions of all Sanitation workers! Some are miserable, down right rude, and lack etiquette or common sense. Personally, I try to justify the truck to the curb I am working on whenever prudent. There are times when I do INTENTIONALLY not pull curbside. There is a specific avenue on my route, EXACTLY as you describe. Our speed limit is 25mph and traffic routinely flows at 40+mph. By blocking slightly to the medial side, we are in affect slowing traffic on purpose. Why? Because in this situation, we don't want traffic that is flowing at 40mph, misjudging the oncoming traffic on a pass attempt, decide in the last second that there is not enough room, and swerve into us while we are loading. At that speed, stopping distance is crucial, if you worked exposed at the rear of this machine, you would understand. Now I wouldn't block you completely, I absolutely would like for you to pass me, I just want you to pass me at or below the speed limit. I hope this makes sense. ✌

@@zac7258 Only one way to figure out my men. This job is definitely not made for everyone, but you can definitely make it fun if you are active and enthusiastic. You will have to deal with costumers from time to time because some won't understand why you can't take their garbage, but for the most, the city will take care of it. One thing I learned working in a warehouse, practically anyone will help you if you get injured. You might get scolded for the rest of your time there by the old guys for doing something dangerous, but they'll help you. don't fuck up and get management making new rules making the work harder. be safe. follow the rules. dont complain about small things that don't pose risk, otherwise it could backfire and management decides not only is it all good, but there should be more. be mindful of the other warehouse pickers and warehouse drivers, clean up your labels. its all teamwork to make the shipping orders go by faster.

Ohhh memories. I’ve been a trash man for 23 years. Now I’m a driver. But started as a laborer like these guys. Most of the time I was by myself. We made it a competition to see who could get their rout done first. Jumping up and down the steps or running behind the truck. This was the first CrossFit workout we got paid to work out. No matter the weather hundred degrees or below zero I had work. Do this day my hands are not the same and my feet also get cold easy.

Not when they’re doing it by hand. Talking from experience those big ass wheeled and flip lidded cans are absolute nightmare to dump and maneuver without bumping them into shit or tipping them over. If they had flippers than that’d be a different story.

I did this for a summer near Auburn AL. It was brutal. You could catch a breeze riding on the truck sometimes. O the maggots though.

For real. When I was 18, I had a job at a factory feeding 60 books a min...1 per second in stacks into a feeder . Had to skid and rack my own pallets as well while not stopping the flow. 3 grown men quit in 2 weeks. They wanted me out, so they put me in. My need for money and food overcame what I thought my body could not. I earned my respect,and bulked up n. Hulked out. I left for a better suited job for myself. I didn't like looking like a body building lady. Much respect

I've ran garbage and recycling routes, I've had what I thought were near impossible days. Barely making it by the end. Those were nothing compared to this. I swear y'all did more in the first 90 minutes than I did by lunch. I will never complain again, I tip my hat to you gentlemen. You sirs, are some damn animals. Straight up beasts. No way I could handle those routes.
Depends on what state and neighborhood you live in, this is jersey, so it's pretty congested, NYC is even worse, I don't even see any separation of recyclables, so I can imagine how much more difficult that would be

The worst days are right after the snow melts and everyone starts cleaning up their dog shit from the winter. It all goes in the trash.
It’s wierd to me to think that some people have such an elitist attitude towards dirty jobs. Growing up, my parents were always friendly to the neighborhood garbage men. My mother would often give them food wrapped up or things she baked like cookies at christmas time. It’s very sad that so many people have fallen into the very selfish bubble of thinking they are better than others.

It's amazing how garbage collection varies so much from one part of the country to another. Where I live we haven't done trash collection like this in decades. In fact we rarely even get out of the truck. Automated hydraulic arms/grabbers to reach out and grab the residential trash carts. It's up to the customer to not have the carts blocked. If they are blocked then they don't get serviced. I'm in the commercial side of the business where I service the dumpsters you find at businesses. Pretty easy, new trucks, great pay and benefits, 4 day work weeks with a 3 day weekend every week. Been doing it for 15 years and it's a great job. But again, it all depends on what part of the country you're in. In this video it's obviously hard, dirty, tiring work. Glad we don't do it like this.

It's crazy how it can vary. I was in Costa Rica behind a trash truck and pulled over to see how they operated. Basically it was a dump truck with 2 guys in the dump body/bucket and 3 guys in the cab. When the truck would get to the next stop, 2 guys would get out of the cab and throw the bags of trash up to the 2 guys in the bucket. The driver did nothing but drive. 5 men to operate one route.
My dad destroyed both his knees from jumping off the trucks all day. Without a doubt the hardest job ive seen

Holding a heavy hammer drill while hunched over literally chipping dirt as hard as clay under my feet level. It was horrible and I had dirt and concrete mix in my lungs all day. You die fast there...

I was helper before becoming a driver and I tell any new helper up front, this will be the hardest job you’ve ever done in your life. Mentally physically and spiritually, you will have days when you just get mad at every can for having trash. I like to call them Trashletes. They work out from the time they grab the first bag to their last.
Doing this jobs is when I got real close to god he gave me a lot of spiritual strength 🙏

But also these streets would probably be too packed to even operate an arm along with all the trash i'd imagine a lot would also be outside the cans which may get left behind depending if they change up the rules for this neighborhood then you'd just be driving a green painted version of this and be back to square one with a loading team

This. Standardized cans with wheels and rugged handles. Enforce trash laws (no trash on the sidewalk, no bulk items). This all makes for cleaner streets and better work-life for employees. And better recycling programs. This is how it's done in San Francisco.

I started as a sanitation worker 2 years ago, and this is someone who’s been weight lifting for the last 17 years at the gym and does cardio, and let me tell you....in the beginning of this job I would be exhausted after the routes, a month or 2 later I would fling bags in the hopper and lift these pals dumping them into the hopper with no problem. Yeah its physical and you get a workout from it but it’s a whole different world from the gym. Your using muscles that never have been used, so eventually your body will get adjusted to it. But make sure when your done, either at the base or when you get home from work make sure you do body stretches. It’s a great job but also be mindful of taking care of your body and have a good balance diet, and always stay hydrated. You will do fine.
i do this job here in jackson michigan. i do this in the a.m as a runner (the guys on the back) and im getting my cdl b and then ill have my own route. ill be driving and grabbing cans because thats how we do it here. then after i get out. i go into my second part time job as a forklift operator. 5 days a week to pay the bills and feed my 4 kiddos. take alot of pride in it. appreciate the recognition and respect.

I just got over a back injury and was off a few years ago for another injury. So I have always wanted to try being a driver for something else. I’ve been at it for almost 4years now. We put up with allot at a fast pace all day rain shine snow whatever the day brings. All I can say is remember us come Christmas time. Tips are appreciated that time of year, a thank you card a wave or a smile. Baked goods ect…and don’t forget your mail person as well.

Sometimes the weather can be brutal, and just like any other job you're going to have some bad days. I wish I would of found this job a lot sooner then I did, because it's been the best job I've ever had so far.
I'm 24 and been a Sanitation engineer for almost 6 years now and I love it! I look at it as a workout instead of paying thousands of dollars at the gym ! Only thing that sucks about it is working in the rain or extreme heat! I've seen alot of people around my age get hired and then end up quitting after a month or 2 over the years! Sanitation engineers are the hardest working and essential career in the field and is a real man's job!!!💯💯💯💪💪💪🤘

I haven't seen a rear loader for years. Every truck I see around here is a side loader. Must be a big city thing.
Most of the suburbs in Texas use rear loaders. Not sure about other places though.

In Mexico every garbage truck is that style.
Neighborhoods to tend to be closely packed, and too many cars make streets tight, so there's no free space to put fork-compatible garbage bins, hence these trucks are the norm.

This is definitely a job that you would have to do to appreciate, I’ve done this for 5 years now. I am no longer a groundsman that works on the back but I will never forget when I first started how much I hated getting splashed with rain mixed with dead/live animals, bugs, maxi pads, tampons, condoms, syringes and just about anything else you can think of. That wearing you down mentally and the weather added with the physical portion wearing you down physically. Our routes here in Ohio are cans that can go on tippers on the back that will dump for you. The way these guys have to throw garbage puts a whole different type of beating on you. Respect to all of them.
remember they are slowly drenched in trash and the smell of trash the whole day. if that isn't bad enough, they have to constantly keep up with the disposal of large and heavy bags of trash, and there's no stopping so its always moving. at the same time being cut up in the process. if work was a picture, a garbage man would be that picture. this is absolutely insane the amount of hard work is involved in this job. so much fucking respect for the men and women who do these jobs. man this is insane.
I remember walking to the bus stop in the summer, and one of the throwers on the back asked me was I going to summer school. (I said yes) he said get your education and hit your books hard because you don't want to do this every day. It stuck with me and I was only 13 then.

23.80/hr Cdn ×4days/wk= 50K. My cheques were 2k if I was lucky. 2200 if there's statutory pay included, but it all depends on what material you're hauling, if you get overtime that day, and if you get a tonnage incentive. Lucky to touch 55kCdn (45k USD?)/yr doing this.

Some days you can make over 1k, but you might also make 1k in a WK just depends. Most truckers average 50k a yr which isn't bad. You could always work retail and struggle to make barely over 20k.
These guys are Saints. I had no idea how complicated both physically and mentally their job is. Next time I see one of these guys in action I'm going to salute them, And thank them for their service to our communities.
We used to manually pick up trash like that here in Indy, but now it all in 96 Gal Toters, with Toter Tippers to help lift it up off the ground. which made the job easier, but we still deal with bad people.

As a front loader operator, winters are pretty bad as well. The containers are frozen and it’s very easy for the containers to slip off the forks and go into the hopper of the truck. Likewise, it’s hard to move the containers when they’re frozen as well, so winter can be just as bad as summer. Summer just makes it smell really bad.

@@getchasome6230 believe me brother I know. I have to mess with the commercial garbage, and that is absolutely nuts. But I’m used to it, I don’t even smell it anymore after about ten minutes.
Respect for the drivers for helping even though it’s not there job. Mad respect for the two guys. I’ve worked in conditions like these.
Honestly this work is what I’ll plan on doing someday. I’ve been a dishwasher for years and it is these jobs that are needed and are honestly the jobs that make a lot of people happy. It’s not so bad if you have a positive outlook!
