- In this video we venture to the outer reef to do some spearfishing. This time of year in the upper keys we see a lot of spawning mangrove snapper and a good amount of black grouper, as well as a few mutton snapper. In this video, Justin and i talk through our dives while providing a few Florida Keys and South Florida spearfishing tips and tricks, especially for grouper and snapper.
Overall, we had a lot of fun with friends and family and were glad we could share the footage! Let us know if there's anything you'd like to see us do next!
What species should we target next?
Nice brother,,, i like it🤙
Great commentary! Really awesome dives. How big are your guns? I’m new to the sport and starting a collection. Seemed like you guys were in typical reef conditions. I hear so much about not getting an overpowering gun. I have a 105 pathos Sniper roller ordered. Would that be too much gun for those conditions??
The longest gun we shoot when in shallow is 110cm. When we get a fish rocked up, i’ll typically only shoot one band. My brother shoots a 54in American style that is a great size for this style of spearfishing, but he just upgraded to a 110 Koah euro for longer shots in deeper water.
This is a sick video!
Where in the upper keys is this? I’m having trouble understanding where to go because of that rule of 3 miles out, where can I spear 15-25 ft in the upper keys
You are correct, you have to be 3 miles out to spearfish between key largo to long key. If you have a marine chart or gps, there are lines that show where that 3 mile limit is. There isn’t much shallow reef between the 3 mile line and the drop off, but there is some! Also gotta stay out of pennekamp, you can’t spear out of there to 300 feet or about 5 miles from shore. The better spearfishing is further down the keys, but you can still find nice fish in key largo! Always check with FWC for the most recent regs!
