- In this video Justin and I head out to do a little spearfishing of of key largo. The morning started slow but picked up after we got a nice mangrove snapper in about 40 feet of water. After that, we shot a couple of yellow jack, a nice red grouper, and a cubera that was in a school of 4 fish. We had never seen cubera schooling like this before off of key largo. After this we find a couple of grouper rocked up in a cave in about 35 feet of water. It was pretty difficult to work them out of the cave but it all worth it. The larger grouper weighed in at 23lbs, very nice for off key largo.
If you have any questions about this video feel free to leave them in the comments, Thanks!
If you get muzzle wrap on a reel gun you can grab the reel line between the muzzle and the reel. Then you can let go of the gun and the reel line will unspool, allowing you to make it to the surface. Makes a mess but might make the difference between keeping a gun and/or avoiding a blackout/samba.
Wow, I didn’t even think about that! I will for sure keep that in mind! Thanks for the tip!
What a beautiful fish Nice catch bro,a spearo too, watching here in the Philippines, keep safe Bro,🙏🙏🙏
Hey Derek, Keep the videos coming. Great video guys LIKE 337
badass video 🔥cool to see local guys tear em up, support from port largo
Let's not beat around the bush here, your definitely in Pennekamp. I'll keep it on the low if i get some coordinates
LOL, this would be a slow day in the park!
AH- Hah !! No coordinates for you😢
The Kamp is a few fathoms higher and 3 to 4 clicks s.e. of that spot!
Good try young rascal.😂😂
@@craigullman6129”the Kamp” is not a spot it’s an area definitely a pennekamp poacher but who am I to judge
@@craigullman6129”the Kamp” isn’t a spot it’s an area that’s definitely in the park you pennekamppoacher but who am I to judge
@@craigullman6129 morning little rascal. few things here. Seems your spots are around the duane. and given the sexual bottom relief you are most definitely north of rodriguez key. everything south of rodriguez at that depth is doodoo. You are correct my little rascal, that during this dive you were probably not in the Kamp. however, while the Kamp ends at 3 miles, the national marine sanctuary, a no spear zone that shares the borders of pennekamp, extends to 300 ft, or 50 fathoms if you will. Quite a lovely sanctuary cubera tho.
Keep the videos coming 🔥
Hi friend!!
You need to use a buoy for the speargun. So you can release the speargun and it is attached to the buoy 👍
Excelent fishing 👌👏👏👏
We use buoys when we dive for wahoo, but on this day we were using reels because we were expecting smaller fish and did not want to deal with the hassle of floats. Might start using floats more often for safety reasons!
Hey Derek, just out of curiousity what do you use as the throw flasher ?
About an 8inch piece of PVC with either reflective tape or a reflective strip on it. Super cheep and they work great.
Great video guys. I wish I could do some spearfishing!
It’s a lot of fun, you should give it a try!
what go pro are you using? is it super hard to change batteries in between dives?
We mainly uses 10s, but I recently got a 12 and like it a lot. Between dive spots I usually have someone with dry hands swap the batteries out and if we’re diving all day I’ll charge them on the boat. The newer batteries last quite a while!
You should have a tank and regulator on the boat so you don't have to fight to get the fish out of the holes you were shooting them in. Kind of surprised your dad doesn't make you. Nice fish though and great video.
We carry one now and then, but it is never on the boat when we actually need it! After this, I might try to remember bringing it more often…
I can remember diving in the Philippines in a current so strong you had to bottom crawl and if you turned your head to the side it would rip your face mask off. You'd anchor on the bottom make your shot then head to the surface and wait for the boat to come get you. You can't fight the current you just have to go with it.
that’s crazy!
@@DerekVanHook a little crazy but not the craziest. Like me, I'm sure you have stories you could tell. Back then I was a P.A.D.I. certified divemaster. I had over 500 hrs underwater logged. I was glad you advised people to always dive with a buddy. When free diving shallow water blackout is always a concern. While scuba diving with someone I had never done with we got separated I had almost a full tank of air so I decided to break the rule and finished my dive. It was the worst decision of my life. Not to get into the gory details but that day my dive ended with a medi- vac ride in a helicopter to the hospital. If it wasn't for another diver coming to find me when my partner showed up at the boat without me, I would be dead.... ALWAYS DIVE WITH A PARTNER
Been wanting to get into spear fishing for a long time now! I have a place in Tavernier and a 17 Montauk, any tips on how to get started?
Hey! First place to start is online making sure you have the necessary licensing and checking the regulations for your area. Since you’re just starting out I would look for shallow areas (10-20 feet) that you can comfortably dive and target easy fish such as hogfish or snapper. Be sure to always dive with a buddy and stay safe! Feel free to give us some feedback on how your trip went. Good luck !
Very nice work congrats guys!! I spear out of Duck Key, if you guys ever need a plus 1 let me know!! Always looking for people to spear with, I'm the black sheep of my family lol
Duck key has some great spearfishing! let’s get in touch, we’re always looking for other divers
Not asking for specific spots of course, but as far as I was aware most of the ocean side in key largo is part of the no spearfishing key largo managament area. So when you guys say your in key largo I’m confused. Are you guys going all the way southeast past Rodriguez key and molasses reef, and all the way north out of the management area. Or are you in the management area and there is some kind of rule I don’t know about?
You are correct, you cannot Spearfish anywhere in John pennekamp. North of the park you are allowed to Spearfish, and south of the park you can Spearfish as long as you are at least 3 miles from shore. In this video, we were in one of these two areas.
Are you and Milan going to make it down for the Fourth? Drew didn't know if you had any time?
We can’t stay the whole time but will try to be there a few days at least!
Insane
Awesome!
🙏🏻🇺🇸👍🤙🏼🍀🔱🤿😁 Aloha!!
Hey Derek,
I attempted to message you a few hoursvago in regaurds to seeing if you would ve open to taking my daughter (Heidi) who is 21 and myself out to catch just a few fish sometime this summer.
She has never experierienced the thrill of hooking a mutton , Yellowtail, or small grouper and would be stoked beyond beleif to catch and clean one.
I know Im asking a lot and if you cant, do you inow someone who could ?
Im from Miami and grew up fishing , lobstering and snorkeling but live in Atlanta now.
Any chance you could help this become a reality?
Thanks in advance,
Craig Ullman.
how far off shore?
Legally can’t spear within 3 miles of shore in the upper keys, and you have to stay outside of the park. The rest is a secret 🤫
Nice
Ah yes . . . tight holes!
Siguatera in Miami ?
It’s rare but they do catch fish with it in the keys and in the bahamas www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4530775/
Where in key largo ?
🤫
Never knew big snapper have ciguatera
Not all large snapper have ciguatera, but the older a fish gets, the higher the chance of it having it.
Great videos guys! I have some suggestions that i personally would like to see in these kind of videos. I would like having in some moments when hitting the fish some kind of background music or something similar instead of the commentary. Keep up the great work
We like talking about our dives so others can learn from our mistakes. i’ve done music before but we find it gets boring after a while. A lot of the time it’s hard to tell what’s going on, especially if the water is dirty or the fish are hard to see.
you mentioned bigger cubera may have siguatera. from what i understand there 's no siguatera in the keys. The seaweed the produces it is not present.
According to the Radke, Reich and Morris study “Epidemiology of Ciguatera in Florida”, “The most common catch locations for Ciguatera-causing fish were the Bahamas and Florida Keys”. Also, i have a friend who got Ciguatera poisoning from eating a large Cubera down here. Large cudas are known to have it down here as well.
@@DerekVanHook ask the locals
I AM a local!
You should have took the shot on the one in that cave. Way to sketchy of a retrieve, and just to much BS. Was it really worth all of that effort, should have let him live to be hunted another day.
Still in the box 🤷
Riffe spearguns ??
We use Riffe, Koah, and sea hornet spearguns. They all work great!
@@DerekVanHook never heard of sea hornet before, thanks
The last clip is a good example of a speargun isnt worth your life.
If your ever thinking you need to drop the gun dont hesitate, not saying that was this situation, glad it wasnt.
I need to know, why shoot a jack? They suck
Yellowjack are fantastic, sushi grade fish. Also make great smoked fish for fish dip!
@@DerekVanHook brother you can smoke ANYTHING and make it taste good
Well i’m not going to waste my grouper in the smoker!
@@DerekVanHook now grouper is delicious
You're just out there killing everything that moves, aren't you? It's not sport, you just like killing things.
This video covers an entire day of spearfishing, the clips of fish we passed on do not make the final video. We only take fish that are within the legal limits and size requirements, and we eat all of the fish we take.
Just cant get past killing fish this way.
Seems fine forbrod.and reel.
Too easy qith a speergun.
We may make it look easy, but I guarantee it’s harder than it looks! Anyone can reel in a fish…
I wasn't saying it easy for sure.
I've done both, and although I'm not as good as you are at spearing, I've just seen guys take so many large fish, to fast and I am concerned for the next generation of humans having enough.
Do you live in Miami area,?
That's where I'm from.
