Hi Taylor, I would suggest an afterthought heel to fix the socks. Pick up the stitches using a smaller needle in the row above and below the heel. Then cut the and unravel the heel and replace. Using a smaller needle for the pick up makes it easier and then just knit using the same size needle you originally used. Good luck on your goals for this year!
Came here to say the same thing! Replacing an afterthought heel is super easy and works great. I did see once on a Sox Therapist (the lady who created 🐠 💋 pattern) post say you could just replace the heel the same way (as afterthought), but I just couldn't quite get my head around the logistics to do that. Best of luck though!
My thought same too about after thought heel. I've used Kay Jones of the Bakery Bears umbrella heel and Denise of Earthtones Girl tutorials. Thanks for the tip about smaller needles!
I have an old sock that included a 😊removable heel, that can be reknit if they get worn. I suggest adding in a row of contrast yarn to make any future future heel replacement heel easier.
So many like-minded women! This is great! One more tip: wool heels (or any yarn, for that matter) can be strengthened by using a nylon thread held together with the wool yarn you are working with. Your LYS should stock it in the notions section, or Joann's might have it. Also, now you know your husband wears out his heels, try to get the socks into the mending basket long before the heel is fully destroyed requiring full replacement. My husband was hard on his socks, too, until I discovered the nylon thread.
I knitted myself socks using the same yarn you’re using for your dad. My grandson (he’s 4 1/2) he wanted the same socks. I had made mine as shorties so I had plenty leftover. Today I wore those and he was like 😮 and ran into his room and got his. He was so excited to wear the same ones.
I concur with the suggestions to replace the heels on the wool socks with a form of afterthought heels. But, get some nylon reinforcement thread and hold it double with the wool, just for the replacement heels. That way the second set of heels will last longer. 👍 chicken eye!
I’m sure you have a bunch of FOs for last year. However, it’s kind of nice to see that you also have things that still need to be finished. When I see people that have done like 12 sweaters it reminds how slow I am and how little time I actually have everyday to knit 😄
12? I started watching a long time knitter who had knit at least 20 and separate pile of accessories just as tall! I just couldn’t watch as she also is a full time teacher! Sooo intimidating!
as far as fixing the socks, since you made the heel you did, yes you can cut it out and place stitches back on and reknit the heel. Beauty of that kind. I would suggest when you reknit adding a mohair strand with the wool. I knit my husband a pair of worsted weight socks made of wool with a strand of mohair. he wears them constantly and they still do NOT have a hole in them after 2 years of wear. He could be a fluke but it's worth a shot. Otherwise you could hold nylon thread with the wool yarn as you reknit.
Mending Fisherman’s wool socks… I have made socks for my husband from the very same Fishermans wool and we have had the same problem with wear out. My solution was to take a Patons Kroy sock yarn, knit a rectangular shape a little larger than the hole, and then whipstitched it to the heel. I patched the same way for the foot pad. Because my husband loves these socks, I made him a new pair for this winter, made the heels and an extra long toe/foot bed area out of Patons Kroy and these are wearing much better. He wears these over a pair of fingering weight socks inside his winter boots every day.
Hi Tayler, I have knit many, many socks with Kroy yarn. I use 3.25mm needles and get a great sock! They knit up fast, and my adult son, who Loves knit socks, but never wears slippers over them, has yet to wear them out!😀
You could always do the tried and tried darning method to 'heal the heels' in the same color so you wouldn't even notice it. Good luck whatever you choose to do. 😊
I’ve never knit socks, but yarn is yarn, no matter what. Since Branden’s socks were knit with 100% wool, I’d completely redo the heels and toes of both socks with a wool-nylon yarn, held double if needed, to meet the same gauge as the original.
you can re-knit with an afterthought heel, or look up swiss darning. it's basically picking up stitches over the section with the hole, like just below it, and then knitting a patch (you kind of tack down the sides as you go). then at the end you kitchener it to the top. I prefer this over cutting it out and re-knitting since then you have a thicker layer at the finish.
My husband loves his paton kroy socks too! He has a few different handknit socks and wears them all but that's his favorite. I knit them with size 0 needles (the whole sock) so they are a solid pair of socks... I definitely want to knit him another one. He constantly tells me how much he loves them.
Thank you for all those really fun asides and corrections. :) They really made me smile. I hope you enjoy pursuing your knitting goals in 2025! I'd originally thought to make mine The Year of Sweaters, but now I think I'm going to make it a year of having at least every other project come from stash yarn. I have some *lovely* skeins in my stash, and it's time to get busy making them into hats, scarves, mitts, etc. :) Happy 2025!
I would just unravel that heel and pick up the stitches and knit a new one. I have to tell you - I do love knitting socks. I take two needles around 20 to 24 inches or so and I knit two at a time - I even figured out how to do the heel turn on both at a time. I used to do one and then do the other one separately just for the heel.
Funny story about the Mid Century Stripe socks. I knit a oair of those a year or two ago for my son...they came out great, and yours will too! Anywho.... apparently he mixed up mid-century with middle ages and he kept calling them peasant socks. I finally asked why they were peasant socks, and he said well - thats from the middle ages, isn't it?? 😳😅
I love kroy as well I have some I need to get on the needles. I think the suggestion of picking out the heel and replacing it would be the most effective. I love everything about the striped tee. The arm length is perfect.
I am all about 100% natural rustic yarn for all my knit wear except socks. Socks take me a lot of time, so I only use sock yarn that has a bit of nylon/polymid. I love Kroy self striping sock yarn, I have many pairs made from it💖!! This year my goal is to knit my entire stash by summer (10 projects), then treat myself to yarn for another sweater and shawl. Love all your content, thank you for sharing 🥰
Hej Taylor, nice to see you. As always a lot of inspirations from this episode. I'm looking forward to your finished Flea Sweater. And all the other projects.. To the socks of Brandon: i would do an afterthought heel. Pick up the stitches on both sides, cut out the heel and knit an afterthought heel. You could also darning, but ... Afterthought heel is my tipp... 🎉 One of my goals is knitting a little baby set for the first baby of my niece. March is the date... A sweater and pants and a few pair of socks for the newborn...
If you can find a colour of KROY that wld colour block with the uppers, cut off the foot and knit a new foot. This way you get a tough long wearing foot and save the softer upper. Have done this a few times when I gave in to the lure of hand dyed 100% wool yarn. I also am a lover of KROY!
Put on the list of needing not want the stripe sweater pattern. I love that you showed the difference between a sock with nylon and without. You are luck to have a hubby who wears the socks. My put his in his emergency go bag😢
As far as fixing holes, look up darning. All you need is a needle, some extra yarn about the same thickness as what you originally used, and what's called a darning egg. It's a wooden object that's usually shaped like an egg, and it often has a handle.
As I was watching this I was wondering what had happened to the flea sweater. I love your comment about quality over quantity, I feel that is always the best way to go. Good luck with the socks, I think the comments about the afterthought heel are spot on! In the futurte, make sure you grab them before they have a complete hole, that way you can duplicate stitch the heel instead of replacing it completely. I have to start examining my husband's socks before I wash them, he always hands me things that are completely destroyed asking me to repair them.
Hi Tayler, I just had to chime in about sock repair. I wear through my socks pretty quickly, except for my handspun. I suppose because when I spin fine, I also tend to put in a lot of twist. So that's one tip about socks yarn without wool. More importantly, fixing the current socks. I've darned my socks with mixed results, but because I also rug hook I have wool fabric and one day after considering a 3rd repair on the same sock, I thought, why not put a "patch" on them. It couldn't be any more uncomfortable then a 3rd darning. So I cut out the worn area on the sock, cut felted wool fabric patches and then stitched them on with a closely spaced blanket stitch around the edge of patch. It worked so well as far as comfort, I continued to patch the other sock and both ball of foot holes. The patches are like what you would have on the elbows of a blazer or cardigan. That's actually where the idea came from. It works great as an alternative to traditional darning.
Hi Tayler, You can fix those socks with a darning needle and a darning egg. My father used to do it with his wool socks, and it was how people mended their socks for generations before nylon came along. Search it on RUclips if you haven't yet. Then please do a video on it, yourself! I'd love to see it!
You could absolutely reknit that heel by picking up the stitches at the beginning of the heel and reknitting it. Another thing that affects the durability of sock yarn is the twist. If using yarn with no nylon you should make sure it is tightly twisted. Paton’s classic is a rather loose twist for socks. There are some worsted weight sock yarns available but I haven’t seen any without nylon. That could be because I wasn’t looking for it, I prefer to use nylon so the socks last longer.
I received notification you'd uploaded a new episode whilst cleaning out the bedroom. 6 giant bins filled with yarn reside in this room! I have 5 grandsons coming to stay later this week, and they need places to sleep. This was my goal today! Now I am enjoying listening to your goals and love the word 'intentions'. I shall use this word when I get around to considering my yarn 2025 goals 😊
Nine Ten Publications has an excellent Sock Mending Guide. I purchased several and gave them as gifts to my family and friends that knit socks. All have praised this booklet ❤
For mending, I would cut out the old heel and just re-knit a new short row heel. I'd be sure when I'm re-knitting it to use either a yarn with nylon OR holding a strand of mohair(with silk!!!) with the yarn to give it strenght.
I have no problem with using nylon in socks, however I will point out that there are non-nylon sock yarns that hold up pretty well (Mondim comes to mind). The problem with the fisherman’s wool is that it is not designed to be a sock yarn. If there is no nylon it does need a high twist I think. I would probably replace the entire heel since the hole is big, and use a sock yarn held double. Great video as always!
Thank you so much for sharing the fact that we do not have to do great quantities to be happy with our knitting sometimes it drives me crazy to see these people that do so much and I wonder what else they do in life besides knit socks and and the whole pile of sweaters. No shaming just glad that there is joy in less. I use a reinforcement thread in my son's sock heels. They are a little thicker but hold up well.
I mend them. Its much easier if they are not completely worn through. Depending on sensitivity there are many types. Or alternativer make afterthought heel
I want to focus on gift knits that I'm excited to gift (I.e. not last minute, but planned out and done earlier in the year) and knitting items that fill a gap in my wardrobe/life.
🙌🏻🐓 Thanks for going over your goals. I’ve been feeling bogged down finishing projects from last year rather than starting new ones for the new year. But I do want to finish these projects, and it does take a while to knit larger projects. Happy New Year!
I am a sock knitter and I also love kroy! You can pretty much do anything and still have great socks😂. I do knit mine on a US1 or 2.25 mm just because no matter the yarn choice the smaller gauge does help with durability. I am also knitting a no frills right now. Literally finishing the second sleeve as I watch this video. ❤
I’m always inspired and learn when I watch any of your videos! Thank you for all you do for our crafting community, you are by far one of the best! You are such a beautiful, humble, and kind soul!! It’s always a pleasure watching your channel. YES, the Little Stripey Tee ❤❤❤!!!! I know I’m not alone is saying I can not wait and I’m so excited, woohoo yeah, this is AWESOME!!!
I HIGHLY suggest weaving in ends as you complete a square on the granny square afghan. When I weave in the starting/center ends I don’t trim those yet so at quick glance I can see the wrong side when I crochet the squares together then I trim those ends. I hope that makes sense. 🤪🌻
The socks for your dad and Brandon will be great! I am going to knit my son a pair of socks for next Christmas, and he’s a tall guy too . I would like learn to darn socks better. I really have no knitting goals, only reading goals. The blanket is a lovely throw!
I’m so glad that you’re finally making the Terrazzo sweater! When you shared about it a year and a half ago and where you got the yarn I was so excited because I couldn’t find the yarn anywhere but I bought some yarn from the shop that you mentioned and I was able to make my own at the beginning of 2024 and love it! I wore it yesterday. 😊 You’re gonna love it too!
As to your husband's socks with the holes in the heels.I would rip out the heel and find some Paton's Kroy that either matches or contrasts well and knit the heels in that.
Always look forward to your videos! I have a few fiber projects that I want to complete this year..... a sweater for my granddaughter, some spooky socks for my youngest and a super bulky blanket for my oldest. Let's see how much I accomplish!
It’s amazing to see realistic goals for the year, I personally cant wait to see your flea sweater all finished and blocked, I’m still just as obsessed with your colours and think it’ll suit you perfectly ❤
I love these videos so much! Commenting to show my excitement for the TERRAZZO SWEATER!!! It's such a dream knit for me!!! As someone who also loves to knit but lives in a warm (Southern) climate, I can't wait to see what you do with the turtleneck situation.
Hi Taylor, for the sock repair- I usually do a darning that looks like it’s woven. After I’ve darned a pair a couple of times, I pick up stitches, pick out the old heel and do an afterthought heel. I’ll also do the same to repair toes. I do a lot of repairs because I just can’t seem to let socks go after I put so much into making them.
I'd cut the heel with the hole and make a new heel, maybe an afterthought heel. And then do swiss darning (double stitching) for the other heel that doesn't have a hole yet. That way you could get to try two different mending way. The third, and I think the most common, weaved darning. I don't really like doing weaved patches but sometimes it's the best choice. But in your case the hole is so big that and seems to be in the curve of the heel so easiest is to make a new one.
The way you described repairing the heel is exactly how I would do it. FLK heel works well as an afterthought, and then you just have to graft the top of the heel to the bottom of the leg.
There are a number of options. One would be to treat it like an afterthought heel. That might be the easiest. Another would be to do a more traditional form of mending, but to me that is a lot of trouble. Or, you could use one of those little loom things and create a patch over the hole after stabilizing the stitches around the hole. I stopped knitting socks for this very reason. My husband can wear a hole in his socks within weeks of me completing them. So, I decided they are more trouble than they are worth.
I have a similar process where I like things to exist. I have a ton of stuff that is cast on and maybe through the ribbing so at any point I can just decide that’s the thing I feel like and knit a couple rows. I cast on hey sailor last Friday and knit 2 rows then threw it in my work bag. So there is something there. The striped tee is adorable.
GM Taylor The Paton Kroy Is the best My husband said don’t make some for me I won’t wear but I did make him a pair and Taylor he doesn’t take off when cold .. they get washed and back on feet I make all the men in my life like brother in laws, son in law etc with this wool. Yahoo the best !!😊 The heel to fix looks more complicated then it is Yes I would rip out , pick up stitches on either side knit another heel have it done in an evening 😊 Your sweater looks beautiful.. nice and light look and color is lovely 🥰 I want that little striped tee pattern .. hurry Taylor lol Until next pod !! Take care and see you then 😊🥰
To fix the heels I would pick up the stitches on either side of the heel and cut it out and knit in a peasant heel. Basically treat it like a forethought heel with a huge waste yarn section 😊
🙋I know, I know where the eyeball came from. I showed my friend your emotional support chicken video & she got so excited about it that we made a couple & they are stinkin' cute. 😁
I am teaching myself mosaic knitting this year with the help of talent podcasters on youtube and some great designers. Word this year is the Swedish word Lagom
As I am watching, I am knitting a pair of socks in Kroy and wearing a pair of socks in Kroy. Joann’s has had a great sale or clearance of this yarn. First time using Size 2 (2.75mm) needle and they seem more flexible than using smaller sizes.
Oh Tayler, that Noro Silk Garden solo color 1 (also called Omitama) is a huge "crush" yarn color of mine! I have a stash for the right sweater or other project. Haven't gotten the pattern picked out yet. The cardigan I started last year I was so excited about but then was blown into making two other cardigans (both Bolero styled).... anyway.... ahem..!
I’m so excited! I will be buying the pattern for the Stripey Tee the second it is available! I’ve been hoping you would release it as a pattern since the first time I saw you wear it on a podcast episode.
I'm trying to finish this ribbed vest for my dad that I began March 2023 (he's 6ft tall), put it down for a while bc school got busy & somewhat forgot until I looked in one of my several tote bags lol. I also have a scrappy sweater I want to finish sometime this yr which I'm pretty confident will happen soon (Just need to figure out what colors to do the sleeves. Definitely gonna knit at least 2 pairs of socks for myself at some point too. Those are my current WIPs/project plans for the yr so far.
Ps high five! I remember the eye ball. I think everyone needs to make one eyeball granny square while working on stuffy. Oh the socks with holes in the heels, sad day but i know you will figure it out. I dont find lion brand fishermens wool to be very tightly spun so it might benefit from a tighter gauge like as small as you can possible stand to knit. I knit worsted weight socks on a 2.5mm needle. Bullet proof lol
🖐🤛 your editing has always made me laugh but this episode had me cracking up. Thank you for that 😂. Also, what else can you do with a big ol bag of eyeballs but to use them in a blanket???
In this case I would cut out the heel and make an afterthought heel on the sock. Then I would go over the rest of the sock and see where it is wearing thin and pre-darn. I just threw out a pair of really lovely socks because there was so much to darn that it would be faster to knit a new pair. In the future I will buy sock yarn like Patons or other, because the luxury sock yarn does.not.last
Use Patons Kroy yarn for socks for my adult girls - just. - JUST - finished a pair in the color way Brown Rose Marl. Got two balls of Gray Brown Marl waiting for a second daughter. Have all of the same color ways you showed waiting in the wings.
If it helps, when I used the patons Kroy sock yarn, I also knitted on size 2s! They're my husband's and my fav socks 😍. I want to buy more yarn to make us each another pair for next year. It's great yarn!
Hi Taylor, I would suggest an afterthought heel to fix the socks. Pick up the stitches using a smaller needle in the row above and below the heel. Then cut the and unravel the heel and replace. Everyone in my family got a pair of socks for Christmas this year. Most of them were knit with Patons Kroy yarn. Good to hear they wear so well.

My gold for knitting is to learn to knit by doing wash cloths
That is a great goal! 😊
I narrow my sock legs as I have big calves. Love that they fit so much better.
I remember the eyeball! 🐥🐔

I learned by watching RUclips. I think it was a combination of professor pincushion and Bernadette Banner
For mending, I would cut out the old heel and just re-knit a new short row heel. I'd be sure when I'm re-knitting it to use either a yarn with nylon OR holding a strand of mohair(with silk!!!) with the yarn to give it strenght.
🙌 eyeball granny square. I remember the video 😅 would be interesting if kept tho as a little silly fun thing.
Yes, cut the heel out and reknit it with yarn that has nylon in it. You will most probably have to reknit the ball of the foot at some point as well.
Love this Nik!
🙌🏻🐓 Thanks for going over your goals. I’ve been feeling bogged down finishing projects from last year rather than starting new ones for the new year. But I do want to finish these projects, and it does take a while to knit larger projects. Happy New Year!
Today I'm sharing 8 goals/things I want to focus on with my knitting in 2025. What are you wanting to focus more on this year?
I am not losing any yarn needles (I hope.
Writing my first own pattern, I started a year ago, but then things got busy and I just recently rediscovered the project
I want to knit &crochet myself 2 pairs of socks....
🙌🏼 thanks for sharing your intentions! I have some Kroy sock yarn…you’ve convinced me to get it on my needles!
I HIGHLY suggest weaving in ends as you complete a square on the granny square afghan. When I weave in the starting/center ends I don’t trim those yet so at quick glance I can see the wrong side when I crochet the squares together then I trim those ends. I hope that makes sense. 🤪🌻
I made the terrazzo. It is one of my favorite! I love the shoulder shaping. It fits so well.
Eyes from your chicken! I have one 1/2 done for my sister since April. Maybe I can finish it before her 65th birthday!
The socks for your dad and Brandon will be great! I am going to knit my son a pair of socks for next Christmas, and he’s a tall guy too . I would like learn to darn socks better. I really have no knitting goals, only reading goals. The blanket is a lovely throw!
Did you do the 👁️ in the granny square when you were doing the support chicken 🤔
Love the support chicken by the way
Hi Taylor, pick up the stitches first when replacing the heels. You will run less likely to have lost stitches. Happy knitting!❤❤❤
Ooooooo that color combo on the sweater is beautiful!
So inspired! Love this 👌
As to your husband's socks with the holes in the heels.I would rip out the heel and find some Paton's Kroy that either matches or contrasts well and knit the heels in that.
Great goals! I too want to follow through with my intentions this year! Oh and Happy Birthday to your father-in-law! 🎈🎉
I would definitely cut the heel out and replace it. I do this all the time. It works perfectly.
The way you described repairing the heel is exactly how I would do it. FLK heel works well as an afterthought, and then you just have to graft the top of the heel to the bottom of the leg.
✋️🙏 I do indeed know from where the eyeball came. 😂 I don't usually comment, but I'm always here. Lol
I love that Julie. Thank you. ❤️❤️
GM Taylor
The Paton Kroy Is the best
My husband said don’t make some for me I won’t wear but I did make him a pair and Taylor he doesn’t take off when cold .. they get washed and back on feet
I make all the men in my life like brother in laws, son in law etc with this wool. Yahoo the best !!😊
The heel to fix looks more complicated then it is
Yes I would rip out , pick up stitches on either side knit another heel have it done in an evening 😊
Your sweater looks beautiful.. nice and light look and color is lovely 🥰
I want that little striped tee pattern .. hurry Taylor lol
Until next pod !! Take care and see you then 😊🥰
Really enjoyed hearing about your intentions, and i agree it feels healthier and more manageable to look at it that way. ❤
Would love to see everything you made in 2024 in one video!
To fix the heels I would pick up the stitches on either side of the heel and cut it out and knit in a peasant heel. Basically treat it like a forethought heel with a huge waste yarn section 😊
Hey Tayler. I was looking at your hair and as one of your OG viewers I cannot believe how long it has gotten. ❤😊
@@lieslnew8247 omg I know! It’s grown crazy fast. And I feel like there’s a ton of it. 🥴. Thanks for noticing. ❤️
I loved that episode. Is anyone knitting/crocheting the blanket?
🙋I know, I know where the eyeball came from. I showed my friend your emotional support chicken video & she got so excited about it that we made a couple & they are stinkin' cute. 😁
Love this!!! 😍😍😍
I love your little black tee Tayler! Looking forward to the little stripey tee also!!🙂
I am teaching myself mosaic knitting this year with the help of talent podcasters on youtube and some great designers.
The cardigan I started last year I was so excited about but then was blown into making two other cardigans (both Bolero styled).... anyway.... ahem..!
Darn or knit a heel with sock yarn with nylon.xx
Good intentions for 2025, I like it! 🎉
i remember the eyeball too
Also there are some great videos on YT show how to mend holes.
Kroy sock yarn is amaaaazing….Knitted my 2nd pair with them. Pattern was “Intersections” by Marceline Smith from “52 Weeks of Socks Vol. 1.”
I’m so excited! I will be buying the pattern for the Stripey Tee the second it is available! I’ve been hoping you would release it as a pattern since the first time I saw you wear it on a podcast episode.
I too love the No Frills Sweater. Have made it twice now. Would make it again!
Mending socks: have a look at Roxanne Richardson or Nimble Needles (Norman) they are both fab for techniques esp details!
I plan to knit my first pair of socks (yikes!), and just started a lovely crochet shawl.
Thank you for another great video. I recognized the eyeball right away and had to laugh.
In the future I will buy sock yarn like Patons or other, because the luxury sock yarn does.not.last
Hi Taylor…Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! I have 2 skeins of the sock yarn you will be making your dad’s socks with (same exact color!) 🖐️
Oh cool!! It’s such a good color combo!
I would and have darned many socks. Thank God for my mother-in-law for teaching me almost a 1/2 century ago.
