Doing a slate roof is not that eeay, get a roofer and let him look at it, also whats under.. my roommate is a master roofer and I know it looks easy, and what they see is not what normal ppl see. Dryrot all things like it.. and get a wildlife person to rehome the bates. Thats the best way.
Think about your needs and what kind of needs and costs a dog comes with and yes for all animal you need back up plans. ❤

Just want to offer you some encouragement for your kitchen remodeling. I'm a 75-year-old lady who recently replaced my ancient kitchen cabinets with new ones from IKEA. Used a crowbar and claw hammer to take apart the old cabinets piece by piece after buying the new cabinets one at a time when I could afford them. Each week I would assemble another cabinet. First one took 2 hours. Last one took 20 minutes. I have glass doors and deep drawers for pots and pans. I had a professional measure and install the countertop and plumb the new sink. The kitchen looks lovely now. You can do it!

May I suggest investing in a small freezer..many veg can be frozen and really is much easier and less costly than canning.Beans , carrots needed to be :blanched for a few minutes befor freezing ..its easy..just google. Storage is less of a problem also. Almost any fruit and veg can be frozen, It also means that jam making can be done at leisure after the busyness of fall. That can be tiring and panicky .Lol...just another grannies advice Jude!!

There was book many years ago, called Square Foot Gardening, that showed you how to maximize both space and number of crops you can grow. After volunteering at a shelter for the past 11 years, I just suggest you research the breeds you are looking into. Even crossbreeds can be a handful. eg, Border Collies are lovely and make great farm dogs, but if you don't have anything for them to herd, all that energy goes elsewhere. You like lists, so I suggest you make a list of what it is you want and need your dog to be, and then do your research. Good luck with your hunt. Having someone to greet you with so much love, every time you walk in the door, is priceless!

Agree with what you said about dogs. You train them to manage without you by increasing the time you are away from them from when they first come into your life. 15 minutes becomes 30 and so it goes. My whippets know when I say I'm going to work" that I will be away for the day. They just chill out and sleep, with the cat, until I come back. Often they are in the same spot curled up as when I left them in the morning. Also good to leave them with a dog sitter or similar for a weekend away from when they are little. They can cope without us for 6 weeks if they are being well looked after. Also plenty of people now offering in home care for your dog, while you go on holidays. Whippets in the UK even have a holiday swap FB page, so they can organise to accommodate each other's dogs.

Grandma here. My best advice regarding a dog is you are looking for a friend. It is important to find a companion that matches your energy. All dogs need a job and so think carefully what you want that job to be. I would not recommend a herding breed with all those cows next door. Herding breeds are workaholics. I also recommend a dog you can pick up but someone under 8kg is a bit vulnerable to predators. An adult with some training at around 3-4 years old might be ideal. Someone who will be happy just to be with you but also small enough to be easy to kennel as needed. I would also avoid hunting breeds given your location. Even though terriers can be headstrong and barkers I think that might be a good choice. Working with an experienced rescue organization that understands your situation could be a good match. Dogs are wondrous and the best friend you will ever find but realistic expectations are important for both of you to be happy. Our dogs are people to us.

I also live alone without near family. My dog is tremendously important to me. I have never had a problem leaving my dog at home while running errands. You can crate train your dog and that solves that problem. You can board a dog when you travel, but once you have chickens, a cat, and a dog you will probably want to tap into the local network of house sitters. Word of mouth and your local vet are good sources for referrals. Here in the US you can buy pet insurance to cover the big vet bills if you have any. I presume that is available in Scotland as well. Don’t overthink it. The emotional return on investment is the best deal you’ll ever make.

Mine is very chilled about staying in his bed whilst I go out running errands etc. He's been in kennels 3 or 4 times and has been fine, but you will need someone locally who can help you out from time to time. Hey lovely Jude....happy new year! Now, a dog.....I got mine after a bit of a difficult chapter or ten! I figured that being responsible for a furry companion would force me to rebuild my life with more determination and not sit around procrastinating. Enter Moo, the cockapoo (Molly, but Moo suits her better!) in January 2017. This little ball of love and fluff gave me a reason to get up and out every day. She introduced me to new people, encouraged me to explore and helped me find my adventurous groove again. So much so, I sold my flat in 2023 and moved into my self build campervan full-time. I walked away from a job I hated with a little pension and now live simply but beautifully, mostly in nature. At 56, I am at peace. Without Moo, I don't know where I'd be.
Dogs are God spelled backwards. I'm not religious but you'd have to be dead not to see a spark of something divine in these wonderful animals. You will not regret getting your own fur baby for a single second. I'm excited to see what happens! Sorry it's a long one! Hugs n stuff

Well made, easy on the budget and customizable. I’m an interior designer and have designed several kitchens using IKEA. You cannot beat the value. Don't worry about the bad dog stories Jude. I had a Leonberger (look it up 😂) for 10urs and could leave her for a few hrs. Not being able to go to the supermarket that's ridiculous. We love them and adore them, but ppl treat them like babies 🙄 It's what they get used to that counts. Im sure you will be a treat dog owner 😊 what great chums they are.

I’m a 75-year-old grandma too and we have a veg garden perimeter around our chickens. The chickens love what falls on the ground and their chicken poop is great nutrient. And the bonus is the chickens keep the insect population down so the veg are actually healthier. You might want to look into that becauseyou’re really maximizing your output and you will have organic veg and organic eggs.

Jude: you really are an incredible human being. You are so resilient and so authentic. I know this is easy to say, but you are my #1 RUclips channel and every Sunday I look forward to settling in and watching the entirety of your video. As for the septic tank ~ I also have a septic tank and it really isn't that big an ordeal to get it pumped. The part that always amazing me (if amaze is the correct word?) is that the person pumping out the tank always opens the lid and then looks down inside. Kudos to the people who do things I don't think I could. You will feel a real sense of comfort knowing the tank is empty though. Have a wonderful week, Jude. I also own a dog . . . and owned a dog when I was on my own. Yes, it is a big commitment, but the love and companionship can't be expressed in words.

I see you really enjoying Lerner how to can and dehydrate. It’s so fun and feels so rewarding. Even before you have all your vegetables coming in, you can practice ahead by buying things like the giant cans of peaches, applesauce or tomatoes and recanting them in smaller jars. Best to learn to be comfortable with it now than when you’ve got mounds of produce coming in.

I work with dogs and for a farm like yours, I'd recommend a Jack Russell Terrier. They are small and hardly (lower vet bills) Their fur is very low maintenance- just a monthly bath and a jumper in winter. If you're worried about leaving them alone the best solution is to get 2 so they can entertain each other, but that is, of course a bigger commitment. Love your channel ❤

I also live alone and cook for one. I am building a tiny house on wheels and learn to cook better meals for one. I do can. I would suggest that you look into a pressure canner as well. That way you can preserve meats and nonacid foods. I look to preserve fermented foods more because they are more nutrient dense. I do not have freezer space and live off grid, so electricity for a large freezer not for me now. Think about preserving some of your meals by canning them as well. I try not to make meals for more than 6 servings. Plan to eat proper portioned meals. Leftovers twice and preserve by canning the rest. Just some of my tried ideas currently. 💚💚💚 Just enjoy.

Lovely to have you back and full of ideas for this year, can't wait to see how you get on. What will be, will be. Re dogs....check out grooming costs - I have a Cockapoo with a tight curly coat which HAS to be professionally groomed, costing £55 every 6 weeks. Insurance is vital and costs for that rise a lot when dog reaches about 9 years old. They also demand a lot of attention. Hopefully you can give a good home to a rescue dog - having a large garden certainly helps.

If you replace your slate roofing, save your slate pieces and maybe you can use as garden bed edging. I recall from many trips to New Orleans some of the slate tiles from older homes were used as canvas for artists paintings. I found an artist who paints different scenes with cats in them. its one of the cooler art pieces I own- a piece of historic architecture and unique art!

I used to joke about not having had a shower for nine years. Our house had two old enameled cast iron bathtubs (two "homemade" bathrooms) when we bought it, but no showers. We explored ideas, discussed options and saved $$ until we had everything finalized and we included a much needed kitchen relocation. So five years to wait for a relaxing soak in a tub sounds about right from my experience. You'll likely get it done sooner because you have your goals, plans, lots of knowledge from your parents and your work ethic most of all, make it happen.

Hi Jude I like the goals list but do take time to chill out too or you’ll make yourself ill.
Moving the shed/chicken house back is a good idea as it can then be fenced with chicken wire as foxes will be near by in that beautiful countryside.
Taken down or dismantling one building will give you bits and pieces to reuse on another part of your projects.
Enjoy whatever you do, I’m looking forward over the course of time to see what changes you make. 👏👏

One trick I’d love to share is to keep ingredients rather than made meals in the freezer. I keep various roasted veg, sweetcorn, berries of all kinds, peas. All you need then is some tins and some staple carbs and your favourite condiments supplemented by fresh greens and veg and you can make whatever you fancy very quickly with minimal washing up. Dehydrating fruit, tomatoes and mushrooms is also brilliant and easy to make meals from. Looking forward to seeing all your progress this year!

Lovely to see you back , hopefully Sven has forgiven you for going away for a bit, Our cats are more forgiving than the dogs if we have to leave them alone for awhile or have someone in to feed and be social with them , they just find a warm spot and sleep. One of the dogs , who is just over a year old chews things up, like books, shoes, hats, toys etc.
Sounds like great plans , it would be nice if you could knock a few off the list, especially the septic problem. We add a bacterial product to help it keep working to break down the contents but we really need to get it emptied this year as well. If it overflows and you have a well you’ll need to have your water tested to make sure it hasn’t seeped into your well. 😱.
I’ve seen videos of having the tile roofs replaced and aside from taking time once the initial support work is in place it seems easy to install the hangers and tiles, I’m sure there are lots of vids. The Pethricks replaced a few roofs but no idea which vid they are in. Interesting to watch though, family restoring a chateau and convent in France. 👍🏼
Will look forward to next week, take care, have fun planning for 2025 and may it bring all you wish for. 🥰🙋🏼‍♀️
