I used to think u had to paddle a bunch to catch every wave. Wound up breaking my nose on my board when a double wave broke on my head.
Realized u need to paddle LATERALLY into position and once there u just wait and take 2 or 3 powerful strokes at the last minute.
Once out. The effort of paddling was best invested moving laterally across the beach to get in the best position.
Watch the vets. It's what they do

I am a 58 yo beginner. This was helpful to me to learn the subtle differences between catchable situations vs situations where I have no chance or I will get dumped. Thanks.

Recently got back to surfing after a year long break due to knee issues, been watching educational videos and such for the past week and this one really stands out, my biggest issue surfing is with what waves to catch and how to commit to catching them, great video and cheers from israel!

uncrowded glass. they made good wave selection by avoiding other goons and onshore winds.

If you miss a wave or it didn't really develop pull the breaks fast and get back into position asap. Don't loiter as a rouge set can ruin your day lol.

Isn’t all of this obvious? EVERY developing surfer knows that they should paddle to the peak. The video does not address WHY we often don’t do it even though we know it is the correct thing to do. The answer: we’re not fit enough to do the extra paddling required or are afraid we will get pitched when trying to take off at the peak or the peak is too busy. Solution: get fitter.

Does breaking the ledge involve kicking your feet and busting the lip?

Reading a slide word-for-word is not a good presentation strategy...
