This is an amazing use of old hardware. All this was missing was ditching the wifi card for a USB wifi dongle to leverage that M.2 key connector for an external gpu riser and then slotting in an Rx 560 and sfx PSU. I would happily use that as HTPC.

Great work, one idea though: Rather than a normal desktop it's a better candidate for a low power NAS since it has 3 SATA ports. There are 2 normal ones and a smaller one for optical drive which can be converted to a normal one with an ODD-to-HDD adapter. Use one as a system drive for NAS OS and you still have room for two data drives.
I cried here it was so beautiful!!! I didn't know it was possible to build such a beautiful and versatile cabinet with wood taken from apple crates!!! You just need to be careful with termites...

I have a laptop where the display also goes blank after some minutes. However, it works well and does not go blank screen when connected to an external monitor. Thank you for the idea! Awesome vid!
For future builds, look into getting an EGPU setup (enclosed in the case of course) because then you can have great graphical performance. There are ones for m.2, usb c, thunderbolt etc. You can also use a usb wireless card instead.

i just did somthing similar to this yesterday! i bought two laptops at my local thrift for 12.50$ and 15$ the cheaper one worked fine but the screen was broken so i took the screen off taped the wifi antennena that was in the screen to the case now i have a half top! its a portable all in one pc! just bring screen! the batteries worked on both of them suprisingly also! the 15$ one also works fine too but i need to buy a connector so i can put the ssd inside the laptop instead of having it connected via usb!
I've got almost the same laptop as my main(mine has nvidia graphics). It was taken apart several times by now(two times for clening). Because of a failed cpu upgrade attempt, the bios now thinks that the cpu model is different from what it really is, and also periodically shuts off the secondary hard-drive even while accessing data from it. Many might think it has to be thrown away, but hey.....it has been doing this for the last 1.5 year but still going strong. Battery still works. >6years old. :)

you could always throw an external GPU in it, build a bigger case, maybe even get a real gaming desktop case, install a few more fans and throw it all in there to convert a laptop into a beefy gaming desktop

you can't just swap out the lcd panel to anything, that's a bad idea. even if the display connectors are the same (they usually are), it doesn't always mean the pinout is. you could potentially short circuit the motherboard, exactly like it happened to one of my old laptop projects (RIP) anyway.. loving the way it turned out and thank you for the inspiration. i'm definitely going to try and build something like this in the future :)

@Chris Valin I thought that as well, but no one with a heat gun is going to do that type of damage unless they didn't care. Ive seen what boards look like after they have been put in the oven.. This looks dead on. Sure a heat gun could do it, but why? and wouldnt the damage be localized instead of the *entire* board?

I have that same laptop and it also has a destroyed screen, it does have radeon graphics and 16 GB of memory though so games quite well and everything but the screen works so I just use it as is but with the screen removed
That was to keep it all flat and seamless, if he kept it the way it was there would be a crease (from putting the two floor pieces together). It looks better this way, makes it look like just one piece. And I'm assuming it helped keep the two floor pieces together.

Acer bought Packard Bell years back and used similar laptop cases. That motherboard must of have been in Packard bell Case but was transferred to a similar Acer case.

PC cases made out of wood aren't really my thing, but I admire the creativity of this project.
Pretty great. Their are usb to 3.5mm headphone adapters you can buy for external speakers. Really cheap also for future builds

Maybe a little to late to say but try underclocking your GTX 950m a bit, always helps with bad temps..
