That’s the amazing Russell Thompkins with that amazing falsetto. The Stylistics had that classic Philly sound. Check out “You Make Me Feel Brand New”.
Yes!!
Have loved them since I first heard them they're from my hometown Philly yo!
You Make Me Feel Brand New is a song I loved as a teenager, and nothing has changed. Just beautiful!
-"is that one of them" ?- xD
I consider him a tenor or counter tenor with falsetto undertones
That´s called MUSIC. Thank God I was born in the 60´s!
Me to Bruno! 😍😎Great Comment!
They don't get played enough on radio here in the UK.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "You Are Everything"!!!
edit - Russell Thompkins Jr. - lead and backing vocals. Linda Creed, Barbara Ingram - additional background vocal.
According to Thompkins Jr, the other group members did not sing on this song and 7 of the other songs on this album. Most of the male background vocals on the
Stylistics' hit songs were provided by Bunny Sigler, Kenny Gamble, Thom Bell and Carl Helm, per Bunny Sigler. They were the creators of the Philly Sound with Leon Huff.
Agreed
Also Agree, They are fantastic!
100%
For sure. I listen to their "La-La Means I Love You" at least once a week.
@@kellyreiterman The Delphonics sang La La Means I Love You. Another Philly Soul group with a agreat falsetto they should check out. Didn't I Blow Your Mind. I'll Mine, Hey Love, Walk Right Up to the Sun and others.
This group is often overlooked. Barry Gibb actually patterned his falsetto stylings after lead singer Russell Tomkins, Jr. "You Are Everything", "I'm Stone In Love With You", "Break Up To Make Up", "You Make Me Feel Brand New" (the group's biggest hit) are all beautiful ballads. Probably their best uptempo song is the story song "Rockin Roll Baby". Enjoy exploring this wonderful group!
I was feeling some Barry Gibb in this song so it makes sense!
Good list -- another great Stylistics tune: "People Make the World Go Round."
Break Up to Make Up is 🔥🔥🔥
@@jdw5678 yes, love that song. So glad I got to see them in the early 2000s.
Russell Tomkins Jr. Did a remake of a Burt Bacharach song "You'll Never get heaven" I always liked it better than the Dionne Warrick version
We need more music like the stylistics these days.
it's so sad that, we have grinding music, twerking music, but no Slow Dance music!!!
Yes I'm 36 and I love this type of music instead of music nowadays
The one and only Russell Thompkins Jr. you really cannot go wrong listening to any of his work! Pure perfection!
The Soul of the 70s ❤. Great selection! Check out a group called The Delfonics. "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" is a great one to start with. The sultry harmonies are outstanding!
That's the one. 👍
Great song recommendation!
So much amazing soul came out of this decade.
Oh yes that’s a good one!
"La-la means I love you" is another classic Delfonics track to check out.
Russell Thompkins, Jr. He's 72 years old and still with us.
I’m sitting here smiling ear to ear! This song brings up warm, fuzzy feelings,so this old lady is remembering the good times! I love your reactions, too! I’m not sure who was doing the singing as back when this was popular, there were no videos-just audio. ❤️
Most of the lead vocals were done by Russell Thompkins Jr.
This 61 year old lady wholeheartedly agrees. Love this song!
Slow dance!!!!
I think that is one of the reasons why so much of the pre-MTV radio music was so good then compared to now...music was judged primarily on the talents of the artists and not by what the artists looked like.
The Stylistics, Blue Magic, Bloodstone...all with falsettos that run circles around Bary Gibbs. 💅🏾
This group comes before the Bee Gees with this great falsetto and was their inspiration. Suggested songs- "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "You Are Everything", "I'm Stone In Love With You", "Break Up To Make Up".
Pure. Unadulterated…
Facts…
The Bee Gees came long before the Stylistics. They started in the late 50's. If you're referring to their 70's Disco sound, the Bee Gees had many hits in the 60's with a completely different sound due to brother Robin Gibbs writing.
The Bee Gees came before The Stylistics. I'm pretty sure their first hit was 1965.
@@unclephil7650 The Bee Gees officially formed in 1958 as a boy band.
Not even close- I like both the Bee Gees and Stylistics, and I can tell you that the Bee Gees were WAY before the Stylistics came on the scene.
I know I've said it before but as a 61 year old who listened to this music in my childhood your videos make me happy. The joy and love you both put out is amazing. We need many more like you two in these times. Thanks for my 3 a day fix !
Oh so true and so well expressed. Jay and Amber are a real ray of sunshine.
I agree !
Love these two! My favorite to listen to and watch..they seem like such good people ❤❤❤
And they are so cool and kinda Innocent , They are to cool and timyoung im 63 and still gots to enjoy all types of music :)))))) from Stylistics to Styx to Led Zepp :)))))
65 here...i concur
So many great hits! Listen to their song, "You Are Everything." Beautiful ballad. Pure SOUL! 💯❤👍 👍
I wish more young people appreciated these groups. They were amazing talents.
@dillodefense: 👌🏽👍🏽"T A L E N T"👍🏽👌🏽
1000, 000 %
.
Great song! The Stylistics are an American Philadelphia soul group from the 70's. They had a lot of great hits such as "Stop, Look, Listen", "You Are Everything", "I'm Stone In Love With You", "People Make The World Go Round", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "Rockin' Roll Baby", "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)" etc.
Excellent list. I would like to add a particular favorite of mine "Children of the Night". Beautiful song.
@@buckleysdead must be a REALLY deep track-I have listened to a LOT of Stylistics, and I have never heard of that song.
@@buckleysdead oh I was hoping someone would mention that song. One of my favorites from their Round 2 album. Used to play the 8 track over and over.
@@jessieball6195 Find it quick. It's great!!
Yup, "I'm Stone In Love With You".
You will never go wrong with the Stylistics.
Russel Tompkins Jr. was the original lead singer of The Stylistics. They recorded this song in 1972 and are still making us here in Philly proud today as they're still successfully touring worldwide.
Jay, "You are everything" is their most impressive falsetto.
Songs by this group as well as The Whispers, The Dramatics, The Manhattans, The O'Jays, The Delfonics, Blue Magic, etc, these songs, these groups can't be duplicated. The magic of their talent is just crazy good. His name is Russell Allen Thompkins Jr. THE man!
Whispers were the bomb
@@mac2920 For Sure!
You forgot the Mighty Dells.🤔🤔😎
@@rwarren4637 Sorry I didn't mean to! The Dells, The Moments, the Chi-lites, The Temprees,, The Young hearts, Enchantment, Blood Stone, and so many more.
Yessss. MY ERA! SONGTRACK OF MY LIFE.
One of the true iconic groups of the 70`s...They have a long rabbit hole to go down.
Everyone should love and appreciate The Stylistics
These elegant black gentlemaan groups were prolific in the early 70's. I like the Chi-Lites the most, but there are many more. I hope you will react to more of this kind of music. When we were much younger my wife and I would play this music and dance. I think our children owe their existence to this style of music.
Jerry...saw them in the early 2000s!!
Russell Tompkins Jr has one of the best voices ever, you need to see them sing this live! Nice!!! ❤❤
The Stylistics are a group you need to explore that rabbit hole from the 70's
"I’m Stone in Love With You", "Stop, Look, Listen", "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "You Are Everything" are worth listening too.
All my HS songs! The BEST!!
Indeed they are worth a listen, along with a real favorite of mine "Maybe It's Because You're Lonely ". Oh those 70's groups like Blue Magic, The Chi-Lites, The Dramatics, The Intruders, and quite a few more. Great memories.
My favorite Stylistics songs are "People Make the World Go Round" and "I'm Stone In Love w You". Both of these songs have that early 70s R&B sound that was so smooth. They were part of the "Crooklyn" movie soundtrack and it was a perfect fit.
Love I'm stone in love with you.
People Make The World Go 'Round is it!
I love Children of the Night.
Yessss. I love ALL their music though.
There are three songs that will blow you away... Children Of The Night, People Make the World Go Round, and Stone in Love... plus Break Up to Make Up, Hurry Up This Way Again, You Make Me Feel Brand New, Peek-A-Boo, and Payback's Dog.
The Stylistics were produced and arranged by the great Thom Bell who also worked The Spinners and The Delfonics. Mr. Bell was classically trained and it shows. He passed away not so long ago.
This is my all-time favorite song. Used to sing it to my son when he was a baby.
Awwwww, that just made my heart sing. What a wonderful idea.
D'AW!!
Sweet memory...💞🤱
My son is 25 but your sweet memory makes me tear up with memories of singing these great 70s songs while rocking him to sleep.
The Stylistics, The Chi-Lights, The Temptations, all groups we looked forward to at the school dances. Lights go down, music slows, you get out on the dance floor with that special someone, snuggle in tight and just sway to the mellow sounds. Best part of the dance. And maybe, if the chaperones weren't paying too much attention, you could get away with a soft, slow kiss just as the song was ending. Those were the days.
I could not have said it better. And we stayed with them as adults in our 20s and 30s as they tour small venues and clubs just doing the thing the love.
I ADORE The Stylistics. You never did them? OMG. You will love them.
The 70's brought us the best music ever.
I knew you'd love their falsetto! "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "You Are Everything" are two more awesome Stylistics' songs.
This is Classic Philly Soul. Huge worldwide hit.
One of the greatest Rythm and Blues/Soul groups of all time. They were part of the "Philadelphia Sound of the 60's &70's. For a time back in the early 70's. The "Philadelphia Sound" surpassed the Motown Sound of Detroit Michigan. Great reaction to one of the greatest groups ever! The lead singer Russell Thompkins Jr. had one of the greatest voices.
You must go down the "Rabbitt Hole" that is the Stylistics. Awesome reaction.
When Prince covered this song & included it on the album Emancipation EVEN HE DEFERRED TO THEIR WONDERFUL VOCALS & INCLUDED THEM ON HIS VERSION!!!!!!!
The Stylistics are fabulous .... Sublime ❤️ Have often heard Barry Gibb speak of his admiration for them ..... Them and the Delfonics ..... "I can't give you anything but my Love" and "You make me feel brand new" being my personal two favourite Stylistics tracks .... But, it's so very hard to choose ! ❤
Barry Gibb stated this group is where he gets his falsetto from. This group and the Delfonics. He said it in a Rollling stone article and The Bee Gees’ Documentary. I love all of them.
The inspiration for Barry Gibb's shift in the 70's to singing in falsetto. Next song I suggest is "You Are Everything" by the Stylistics. Also "Stone In Love," a song long before Journey's. Russell Thompkins is the singer's name. I hope I spelled it right.
These were played at every disco at my Youth Club in the 70's , just FABULOUS ❤️
Finally, the Stylistics! Believe It or not Prince covered this! Great song, and great rabbit hole to go down. "You Make Me Feel Brand New," "You Are Everything," "Stop to Start," "Stone in Love with You," "Let's Put It All Together," and a couple of uptempo tracks, "Heavy Fallin' Out," and "Rockin' Roll Baby," and my all-time favorite, "Hurry Up This Way again." I always knew you would like that falsetto; the producer (the great, classically trained Thom Bell -- a high school classmate of Daryl Hall) liked it so much that when the falsetto singer left the group he stopped working with them until that singer returned.
Also check out Blue Magic, who has a similar sound ("Spell," "Look Me Up," and "What's Come Over Me," with or without Margie Joseph).
you left out the best one!! You Make Me Feel Brand New....
@@michelejones7157 it's there but I misspelled it 😅
Guys that album cover you have their is when The Stylistics when the were older. If you want to see them in their prime you gotta see them perform this song on Soul Train back in the 70s along with "You Make Feel Brand New" both available on RUclips. The original members were 5 in total. I grew up on The Stylistics as a kid and teenager so this is definitely my era as I was born in 60s. The Stylistics were one of the best groups along with The Whispers, The Temptations, The Ojays
“ I can’t give you anything (but my love)” is absolutely brilliant.😊
Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart - recommended a thousand times needs to be the next Stylistics song.
So many great tunes from this group! "People Make The World Go Round", "You Are Everything", and many others. More 70s R&B, please!!
Finally!!! For someone who loves falsetto I've been waiting (and suggesting) for Jay to listen to the Stylistics. The BeeGees are fine, but their falsettos can get shrill. The Stylistics are smooth, angelic, and lovely. Junior high memories for me. "Betcha By Golly Wow" was my sister's wedding song.
This is the best version of this song, for sure. It was originally written for Connie Steven's under a different name, and Prince covered it for his Emancipation album. He gave the profits/credits from it to the writers of the song in order to financially support the artists from the past.
Respect.
Honestly, I like Prince's version better b/c it had more variations.
Written by the great Thom Bell and Linda Creed who wrote a lot of hits for The Spinners, Stylistics and Delfonics. Philly Soul!
@@jp3813 are you kidding?? Prince's version not even in the same universe as this one by Stylistics.
@@jessieball6195 It's called a personal preference. These reactors had the same opinion. You're gonna tell me that I like snow better than rain as well?
Russell Tompkins Jr., definitely has one of the greatest falsetto voices of our time. You should definitely check out the songs, "People Make the World Go Round", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "Stone In Love With You" and "Hurry Up This Way Again". These are just a few of the Stylistics songs that highlight Mr. Tompkins amazing falsetto voice.
You will love "You make me feel brand new"! And Mick Hucknall's cover is also great!
My mum's favourite band.
I would sit on her knee listening as a little boy.
Please listen to 'You make me feel brand new' and so many great songs by them.
You’ll love their song, People Make the World Go Round
One of my all-time favorite soul groups!!! The Stylistics are Dope!!!! "People Make The World Go Round"i s the next song you guys should react to. Also "You Make Me Feel Brand New." which is a live video You Tube....They are smooth as hell!!! Huge back in the 70's
It's one of their best.
People Make The World Go Round The LONG VERSION! GOAT Stylistics song IMO
One of the best groups. Love their music. Brings back great memories. There's a live version of them singing this song. The man sitting down is your singer. 4:34
Aren’t they awesome… there were many guys who would try to sing like them💕mostly off key!
The 70's was one of the last times when people would get together be like a family and had genuine concern for each other. And this was reflective of the music.
Mr. Russell Thompkins! One of the classic voices! Of the five members on the intro page of the post he is on the far right.
Probably one THE most classic legendary songs from the 70’s Soul era, one those songs that defined the musical excellence that we were all spoiled with , song after song after song on the radio ALL DAY LONG! The standards were sky high for having talent back then, real vocals( maybe enhanced by a little studio echo effect), real instruments , beautiful and poetic lyrics & arrangements ( here thanks to the signature sound of the master producer Thom Bell ) , and then get on stage and perform it live! A verible mike drop to what we get now - no singing with emotion, shallow lyrics about drama , not about love, talking or singing in in two notes, no harmonies , no symphonies , horns or violins , sometime no background vocals , not complaining, just comparing . So glad to have been young and experience great music as it happened, as you guys are experiencing it now.
Thank you guys for discovering the brilliant Stylistics. This band takes me back to my childhood in the early 70s, my mum played their album every Sunday morning when preparing Sunday lunch. It was either these or Barry White 🙂
Your mum had great taste! Can't go wrong with either!😁
I was stationed at Yokota Air Base Japan in the 90's and these cats came to perform at our NCO club for the troops. We got to see them for free and they did an amazing job. They even hung out with us after their performance. It was such an amazing concert and outreach for our military troops overseas. I remember seeing my folks singing this to each other as a young kid. I took even more appreciation of their hits seeing them live. I'm sure that we had an uptick of babies at Yokota after their performance 😂
So glad I grew up hearing this music. So romantic, heartfelt songs.
A miracle of a song. True beauty in music. Glad y'all got to hear it. 😊
Been waiting awhile for this band,a great awesome group with in my opinion has one of the top five falsetto singers of all time,Russell Thompkins Jr.
"People make the World Go Round" show stopper.
Through a musician friend I would get together and work on songs with, I got a chance to hang with these guys for a few hours. I couldn't have been 25 years old -so almost 40 years ago, these guys were awesome people! They actually even listened to my music I had on a cassette. I have no words to describe how cool that was and how cool they were.
Delighted you've discovered The Stylistics, one of the top soul groups of the 70s. Encore! Encore!
The Stylistics had several hits, but my favorite is "You are everything".
“You Make me Feel Brand New” is considered their best song. Y’all need to react to that one.
"People Make the World Go Round" is not one of their better known songs but my favorite by far from them.
Bring back real music. Soul forever and love for women.
This is one of the greatest soul groups of the 1970s. Please check out Phylis Hyman’s version (Amber, great for Female Friday). They have many top hits from that decade, I see many of them already mentioned in the comments.
Phyllis Hyman's version is really beautiful, and a great pick for Female Friday.
Phyllis' version is my little sister's favorite. Shs discovered her when she was around 16 (she's 34 now) and was obsessed with her, LOL.
The stylistics were hugely popular in the UK and had countless hits, more than their native USA. Checkout ‘Rock & roll baby’; Sing baby Sing; I can’t give you anything but my love - a no1 in the UK. The last 2 produced by Van McCoy of ‘The Hustle’ fame.
The amazing falsetto of Russell Thompkins, the guy sitting in the middle. Prince did a faithful cover of this as well.
I am so glad I lived during this time. My parents grew up during “The Big Band Era” so I listened to it with my dad. Then I grew up listening to the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music. How wonderful it has been! ☺️
So smooth and Russell Allen Thompkins Jr. lead singer has such a great range and control. These guys are one of my favorites to go to just to make the day go by.
Always loved this great song that guy with the high voice just amazing band and other songs too
Total chill song, definitely a slow dance classic.
We were so lucky to grow up listening to The Stylistics, The Chi-Lites, The Main Ingredient, The Spinners… awesome music
Jay & Amber You Guys Just Witnessed Through Music A Natural Treasure Called The Stylistics They Are One Of The Greatest Groups Ever In R&B/PopTheir Entire Catalog Is Amazing 💯❤️❤️ Russell Tompkins Jr (The Chubby One 😏) on Lead Vocals One Of The Greatest Tenors/Falsetto Singers In History
“you make me feel brand new” is my mom and dads song. We played it on a loop at my mom’s funeral, it has a special place in my heart and soul. It always was playing in my house growing up. I knew all the words by the time I was 3 years old.
I would also like to give some love to Mr. Airrion Love, who was the "deep" voice on The Stylistics' "You Make Me Feel Brand New". One of the most beautiful voices ever.
This is my favourite Stylistic song brings back so many memories…
"Stoned in Love With You" was the song that introduced me to the Stylistics. Like everyone below mentioned, "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "You are Everything" are timeless classics
Fantastic !!!!! The Stylistics, The Dramatics, The DelFonics all great !!!! Grown folks music !! My youth.
The Stylistics are a deep dive. So much great music. We need more.
At the time, these were an are so well loved an popular there music is still as popular today. I'm nearly 65 an still play their music now, 1 of the most beautiful songs ever written is YOU MAKE ME FEEL.BRAND NEW, they had some many just beautiful stunning songs ❤❤
Love this band!! Remember when I was a teenager! Love being reminded of when all kinds of music was in!!!❤
All their songs are great ..”make up to break up”..”you are everything”
North Philly's own Stylistics! Mr. Russell Thompkins Jr. Russell sang lead on all of their big hits. Try "Stop, Look, Listen To Your Heart" "You Are Everything" "People Make The World Go 'Round" "Break Up To Make Up" "You Make Me Feel Brand New" "Pay Back Is A Dog" "Peek A Boo" "I'm Stone In Love With You" "Rock N Roll Baby"
"You'll Never Get To Heaven (If you break my heart) " The picture isn't of the original line up. Unfortunately there was a split and a couple of members formed "The New Stylistics" and Russell's group is "Russell Thomkins Stylistics". The off shoot group was headed by Eban Brown pictured in the front middle. Both groups are still performing. Russell happens to have been a good friend and grew up with my brother in law Charlie Mosby.
These guys helped define an age in the 70's with their Music. I loved their songs "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "Stone In Love With You" were played at my wedding. It was their signature sound with Russell Thompkins singing in a Falsetto.
Oh wow! What a blast from the past! I forgot just how great this song was. Thank You, Jay & Amber.
Perfect timing for me - today was my brother’s memorial service, and the Stylistics were his faves.
"People Make The World Go Round" is my favorite by The Stylistics! And... "Children of the Night".
I have lovely memories of my late parents dancing to the stylistics when I was a kid. Their songs always make me smile.
This was my wedding song. Still makes me tear up whenever I hear it. Reminds me of my wedding. ❤
I was just thinking that it would be a good first wedding dance.
Takes me right back to 73, loved their music along with The Delfonics, The O Jay's, The Spinners, The Chi Lites, The Manhattans.
The Stylistics are my favorite Philadelphia Soul group!! The great Russell Thompkins, Jr. on vocals, unfortunately not pictured in the picture on the video...that Stylistics group came along much later. So many great songs including I'm Stone In Love With You, You Are Everything, Break Up To Make Up. But one of my favorites is People Make the World Go Round.
I’m a baby boomer and this has been one of my favorite songs through all the seasons of my life. Such a sweet, sweet song.
The BGs didn’t create the falsetto, they borrowed it from the brothers.😊
Seriously though, there are quite a few soul groups of the sixties and seventies that had strong falsetto leads.
You all should check them out!
I've seen them perform live their live is even more entertaining with the group's synchronized dance moves
They had a lot of hits in the 70s.There were a few other groups that have a similar style. The Chi-Lites and The Delfonics were also great.”Didn’t I blow your mind this time” was a great Delfonics hit.
Another legendary music group The Delfonics this group doesn't get their just do . Love All their Songs and their Albums ! ❤
Next you should do Heatwave, Always and Forever. The live version. You’ll love the falsetto in this one too. Another 70’s classic
So great to see the younger generation enjoying the songs that I fell in love with when I was their age. I wish they would have commented on the lyrics because they are just as beautiful as the melody. Thom Bell and Linda Creed were spot on with this song. Check out their live version of this on Soul Train. Beautiful!!
