Woodturning-Hollywood Juniper

- I’ve been looking for a piece of Red Juniper for awhile. I knew the color would be beautiful. It’s known as Hollywood Juniper out here along the California coast (juniperus chinensis) it’s a common evergreen plant used in a lot of landscapes. Often planted next to a house or Building. They can get 20-30 feet tall if left alone, however often times they need to be trimmed or removed because they are to close to the house and cause problems. This particular plant damaged a sewer line and it had to go. As soon as I saw it I had plans on turning it. It was a fun and beautiful little project. I still have the bigger half that I will hopefully turn soon. Thank you for watching and I hope you like the video.
A beautiful piece beautifully turned.😘😘
Thank you Ellen, very kind of you
Hello Sir, Thankyou for posting, that was great watch.
Thank you Ian, I appreciate you watching and commenting
@Darren’s Woodworks Hello my friend,
You are very welcome. Thankyou for your message and best wishes.
Stunning grain lines. 👍
Thank you Carmen, some woods just have that natural beauty
👍❤️❤️❤️❤️🌺
That is one wonderful looking peace. Nice Job
Thank you Kenny
Very nice bowl. I do love the colors in red cedar.
Thank you Rick

@@darrenswoodworks8695 Cheers, take care 😊!
Wow, what a gorgeous piece of wood..! That really POPS.! I have a nice chunk of similar Juniper, can't wait to give it a spin. Nice work Darren.
Thank you rstone, I can’t believe how much juniper I’ve run through the chipper over the years. Best wishes on the piece you have.
We just got a lathe and have a lot of local Juniper…I currently make end tables and out of it but would love to do more with it
Thank you Debbie, it’s a beautiful wood. I hope you get to turn some wood. There are so many things you can make with it. I did a little chainsaw carving years ago and made end tables with it as well. I think I’ll try turning end tables next time I get some. Thank you for watching my videos
Beauriful indeed!
Thank you Scott
Very cool!!
Thank you Larry
The work is really beautiful, but the grain really makes it for me.
Thanks
Thank you Joe, I totally realize it wasn’t my work that has been catching all the attention. It’s just that beautiful grain. If I only had access to such beautiful wood more often.
I thought at first (before you took the chainsaw to it) that this was going to be a lovely tall vase.
Thank you Chris, it looks like a vase with a cap on top. I have it sitting on my table and I was thinking I want to make a vase with the same shape without the cap.
The wood grain looks very beautiful! Nicely done 👍
Thank you Rick.
@@darrenswoodworks8695 You're welcome Darren. It's Jojo not Rick 😉
Sorry Jojo. I’ll try to keep it straight
We people are funny...we say we don't Drama and will cut people out of our lives if they are "too Dramatic" and yet we will watch Movies all the time for the Dramatic Adventure and obsess and even idolize Movie Stars!
Yes Bonnie, you are right about that. It would probably be better if we took the time to know the people we want to cut out of our lives. They might be needing help, if only we took the time. Thank you for your perspective on life. Let’s hope we both learned something with our sharing of life.
@@darrenswoodworks8695 l think l did! 😔
Linda peça!
Thank you Maria
Can you please tell me what the spray was, gave such a wonderful sheen? Such amazing turning, thank you. My liquid isn’t as good but I am a learner. 🙏
Thank you Rita, I used a spray Lacquer on this piece. It did turn out pretty nice.
This has become a beautiful vase. A simply shape, but it is precisely the wood grain that makes this a fabulous vase.
Thank you Thijs, yes you are correct, the wood grain makes it the nice piece that is is. Thank you for watching.
Karya seni yang sangat indah 👍
Thank you Kerajinan unik
👍❤️
Thank you William
Lovely. I have 7 of these giant Hollywood junipers in my backyard , they are an absolute treasure
Thank you Letty, Hollywood Juniper is a beautiful plant. I rarely cut them down. But when I do I love to keep a piece or 2 of the wood for turning. It’s such a gorgeous color.
Juniper wood is absolutely beautiful. That is a gorgeous vase. Great job.
Thank you James.
🙏👍
That is a beautiful piece of wood that turned into a vase! Very nice grain!
Thank you DarkVoid, really appreciated you watching my videos.
I like what you made there, very nice. Any idea why it's called Hollywood Juniper?
Thank you William. Yes it’s Hollywood juniper. Juniperus chinensis '
What a beautiful piece of wood. Your project turned out really well. 🙂
Thank you Morning wood turning. That did turn out pretty well. I sure had to remove a lot of wood to get there. But I still have it sitting in my shelf
I think he's nuts. Beautiful wood that he is destroying.
Thank you William. I love destroying wood into cool looking stuff. Appreciate you watching my videos. 👍
Ikut simak pak ,,, 🙏 moga sukses ya ⭐ mantap hasil bagus ,serat kayunya indah ,,🙏🙏🙏🙏💯❤️
Thank you Rohmat
Very nice that wood is beautiful. I like the way it turned out
Thank you Michael.
good day, I want to ask what spray do you use in the painting video?
Hello Matus, thank you for watching my video. I had this same conversation with Ronnie down below in the comments. It’s just lacquer. I personally don’t like the smell, It’s very strong. However the finish is beautiful. I just recently learn that spraying the lacquer on while it’s turning about 50 RPMs and leave it running long enough to dry and not drip makes a beautiful finish. Thank you again for asking a great question.
looks like you are shaving a giant ham or raw beef.
Thank you Kirk, it does look like a leg of ham.
juniper wood smelling.. like a dream.. im missing
Thank you. It indeed is a very beautiful smell. Thank you very much. Appreciate the comment.
I meant juniper. The Colors remind me of cedar.
Thank you. I totally understood what you meant
Would love to know what the spray polish is? Several people have asked, but I can't see an answer.
Thanks Brian, i sprayed a clear lacquer on this piece. It worked out very well. I’ve used it recently on some other projects and am not having as good success as I would like. Possibly the cooler weather is causing problems.
What kind of spray were you using? The shine is amazing.
Thank you Ronnie. It’s lacquer. It smells pretty strong. But the finish is like glass. Spray while it’s turning about 50 RPMs and let it dry so you don’t get any drips. You don’t need to sand between coats as lacquer melts the coat underneath and bonds to it. I found a rustolium brand at Home Depot for about 7.00 a can. Other brands are getting hard to find and very expensive.
@@darrenswoodworks8695
Thank you, I will get some and put my sander up.
@@darrenswoodworks8695
What’s the name of it, headed to HD and Lowe’s.
Clear Rustoleum lacquer
Any spray lacquer will work. Rustoleum is the least expensive I’ve seen. I use to use Deft lacquer. A painter friend says it’s the best. But it’s gotten really expensive here
I used a Dremel Multi-Tool once, it was a model with an adjustable chuck, no need to worry about anything not gripping tightly in it.
Thank you DarkVoid, that’s what I need.
@@darrenswoodworks8695 If you go for the Dremel be sure it has variable speed control. That is the best thing about Dremel Multi-Tools. 😊👍
That dremel chuck may fit on the tool you have. They're not too pricey, and usually any place that sells dremel stuff will have them.
Hi Darren, how do you handle sap that comes out of the wood? I'm new at turning and I have a vase from Ashe Juniper. The heart is sticky.
Hi Keith, fortunately for me I haven’t had any sap issues. It must be a difference in the different types of juniper or sometimes the time of year it was cut. I hope you can get a good turning from it. I love the color of juniper. Best to you. Thank you for watching and commenting on my videos.
Beautiful Piece and interesting process, thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you Allen, best wishes to you
Wearing gloves while working with fast rotating implements ... -- it's either ignorance or suicidal ...
Thank you Klaus for the reminder. I was wait for someone to bring that up. I usually were fingerless gloves only on my left had when turning to protect against wood hitting my hand and burning as the chips are usually hot. If you have turned wood in a cold shop with wood chips hitting your hand it’s a hard choice to not we’re gloves. Let’s hope winter is a short one. Thanks again for watching
Oh WOW! I can almost smell it.
Thank you Doug, yes it sure smells nice. The whole shop smells great as soon as I opened the door.
Bet your shop smells nice.
Yes it does. Thank you Bill.
I bet the smell was amazing!
Thank you Debbie, yes indeed it smells lice. Very fragrant wood.
Nice job Darren junpier has to be my favorite wood, and they make great bonsai. 👍👍👍Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
Thank you Ernie, I need to give Juniper more credit. I have only turned it once before many years ago. I have the second half I think I will work on next. To beautiful a wood to let go to waist. And you are right, it is a great bonsai plant.
What finish did you use?
Thank you Roy for watching. The spray on finish is Lacquer. I’ve had a couple conversations down below in the comments about this. I’ve used lacquer many times before, but after I took it off the lathe. However I sprayed it on while the lathe was turning and let it dry while turning and the finish turned out fantastic. No drips no runs. And I didn’t need to sand between coats as long as it was smooth and nothing on it like dust or bugs. Lacquer apparently melts the old coat and bonds to it or at least that’s what I was told. It seams to work, And I really like the look. Best to you. Thank you for asking questions.
Lovely share 😊 big like and full support 👌 👍 🙌
Thank you ride free. Appreciate the full support.
what Model of machine are you using?
Hello Jason, thank you for watching my videos. I and using a powermatic 3520 it’s about 13 years old.
I really appreciate how you pressed harder with your tools and carvedbyour piece faster. I lose patience sometimes with other turners because they just barely scrape and the videos drag on. That was a great watch my friend and the piece looked great!
Thank you joe Mamma for watching my videos. As for pushing harder to cut faster, that’s not recommended when turning wood. So I’m not giving you that advise. But I usually have sharp tools and and I like to getter done and sometimes I do what it takes. Thank you again my friend.
Очень красивая ваза! Спасибо мастеру!
Thank you very much Natalia , thank you for your comments and watching my videos
Beautiful piece of wood love the shape

Thank you Steve , Darren from California
We have a lot of that where I live. It's beautiful and smells awesome 👍
Thank you James, it does smell great. Thanks for watching my videos
Do you sell your work?
Thank you for asking Rebecca, I don’t sell my work at present. Hopefully someday soon I will have a format for selling. Thank you again
What a beautiful result. Is this juniper wood as easy to turn as you made it look?
Thank you Larry, the wood was surprisingly easier than I thought would be. It’s usually a very hard wood when chipping and stump grinding. As for turning I thought it would jar my teeth out. But I didn’t have any real issues with it. Thank you again.
Lovely wood.
Great design.
Thanks for the show!
Thank you Harpo, appreciate your comments and thanks for watching my videos
Wow Darren that turned out fantastic buddy well done the colour in that wood is lovely
Thank you Alan. I agree The color is beautiful. Thank you for watching.
You have given me inspiration to start into a pile of 20 or more bowl blank pieces of Juniper. Prior to seeing your video I have only made twig vases. This shape is really great. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Chris, you made my day. Glad to know I actually inspired someone. I’ve been inspired by others and I’m happy to have done the same.

I really like the colors on this one!
Thank you David. It really turned out great.
👍🙏🙏🙏
You put the rough in roughing out! Looks great!
Thank you BwrightAway. I love the roughing out part of woodturning.
Wow, the color and grain is gorgeous. How long does it keep that color?
Thank you E G I hope the color stays for awhile. I’ve had a similar one that lasted for years. It was in a glass cabinet in a dark room. But I think direct sunlight would change it faster.
@@darrenswoodworks8695, thank you for your response, if I may ask another out of ignorance; does juniper smell as nice as cedar?
Yes it does. It smells very similar. Like a cedar chest.
Absolutely beautiful!!
Thank you Steve
🙏👍👍👍👍💯
